In this conversational segment of the Smarter by Design podcast, host Speaker A asks Christopher Parsons about the origin of the podcast’s theme song. Parsons explains that the song’s lead vocalist is Sean Mann, the firm’s Director of Engineering, who previously performed in a band called The Parents. Mann attended the University of Chicago, moved to San Francisco, and was hired by Parsons as a network administrator at the architecture firm SMWM right after college. Later, Mann and Parsons reunited at KA, where Mann recounted his first experience taking the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) and, inspired by a colleague’s reaction, wrote a song celebrating the BART ride with his bandmates. Parsons notes this is the first time anyone has asked him about the song’s backstory, and the segment ends with a cue to play the track.

Okay. Oh, one more thing, Chris. I've been meaning to ask you, cuz I've been listening to the podcast and the theme song is so cool. I feel like one minute you're thinking about knowledge management and then you're rocking out listening to this great song. And I tried to find information about it thinking, you know, what is the song? And yeah, I thought maybe you could share the story on that. And also in the limited amount I could find, it seemed like this group is from Chicago, so I'm wondering why they're taking the BART. I can see why they're walking and taking a bike, but it's so— please tell us the story on the song.
The lead singer in this song is a guy named Sean Mann, who is our director of engineering. Okay. And he was in a band called The Parents. Sean did go to University of Chicago, but then moved to San Francisco. And funny story, right after he moved from Chicago, I was the IT director at SMWM, an architecture firm in the city. And I hired Sean to be our network admin, and this was his first job, like, out of college, and we worked together there, and then we were able to come back together at KA, but he was telling somebody in our firm, it's like, oh, I went to the East Bay for the first time, and it was so exciting, I took the BART, and this girl who was like a San Francisco born and bred looked at him, she goes, the BART? We call it BART, dude. Yeah. So then he like made a whole song about like why it's the BART and got his whole bandmates in. So yeah, that's the story of we took the BART.
OK, I love it. Yeah, it's great. Thank you.
Thanks for asking. I was waiting. I was wondering how long it was going to be for someone to ask me the backstory of that song.
So someone hasn't asked you offline yet?
That's the first person that's asked me offline. OK. So good question.
Now I have to go back and listen. Yes.
Yeah. I encourage it. Yeah. Yes. Thank you all. And then actually, this will cue the song.
