Christopher Parsons argues that AEC firms need an explicit knowledge strategy now because multiple accelerating forces make effective knowledge management mission-critical. He cites an accelerating pace of business change (client expectations, new materials/technologies, regulations), a demographic shift with baby-boomer retirements and younger leaders (millennial/Gen Z) advancing into leadership faster, and the disruptive rise of AI. Parsons frames an "KM 3.0" era—an AI-powered knowledge-management revolution—where good firm-wide and project information is a prerequisite for benefiting from AI and remaining competitive.

Why do you think now is kind of becoming this moment where creating a knowledge strategy is, is really being mission critical? If you. Some of the, the reasons why it's important today are evergreen. They were important back 20 years ago when I was in it. Some of them are really new. But like just starting with today, I think there's a few things. I think there is a pace of change that is just accelerating the pace of business and change are accelerating, whether it's the way that business development is expected to happen, the kind of client expectations, new materials, new building technologies, new regulations. There's that there is a generational transition with baby boomers really accelerating their retirements. And demographically there aren't enough Gen Xers to replace them. And you start seeing is now millennials and even Gen Zs getting in positions of management design leadership sooner in their careers than ever before. So we're wanting to accelerate those people's knowledge and learning journeys. And then there's AI, which is super disruptive in both ways. It's a huge opportunity. But then it's also kind of terrifying or spooking some firms too. And, and the thing that firms that are getting into AI, certainly in our community and clients we work with, they understand that good knowledge is the foundation to good outcomes. With AI, without solid firm wide information, project information, whatever it is, like AI can't really help you. And so there's this kind of renaissance happening within knowledge management. We call it the KM 3.0 era. So knowledge management 3.0, which is the AI powered revolution and it is really helping firms sometimes for the first time understand like it's not just a nice to have to have good project information or good organization like it's essential if we're going to take advantage of these new AI capabilities and stay competitive.
