The Letting Go

Lara Guevara ended a consulting contract when the client's needs no longer fit. Clinging to misaligned work erodes trust, she argues. Honest release let the relationship evolve instead of silently deteriorate.

The best thing I did for this client relationship was to let go of the contract. Not renegotiate it, not stretch the service, not find a way to make fractional work for a business that had outgrown it. Let it go. Here's why this matters. When you hold on to a client relationship in the wrong form, you erode the trust you built getting there. You know the fit is off, and every month you both pretend otherwise. The relationship quietly deteriorates. The better move, the harder move, is honesty. What you need now is beyond what this model can give you, and I'm going to help you get there, even if that means we look different going forward. And that's what I did, and because we did it cleanly with no agenda, the relationship didn't end, it evolved. Know when to let go of the version of a relationship that no longer fits. The right clients will respect you more for it.
