Top 3 Reasons Traders Exist

Lara Guevara explains why traders matter in product sourcing. They combine small orders to hit factory minimums, translate between factory timelines and brand needs like a project manager and translator combined, and absorb risk by fixing problems and switching factories to keep schedules on track.

You've probably heard this a hundred times. Avoid traders. Go factory direct. It sounds smart, right? But after spending years walking, sourcing fairs and visiting factories, I learned that traders exist for a reason. And sometimes they are the reason your launch doesn't collapse. Reason number one is the flexibility. Factories are built for volume. They want consistent reorders, large MOQs and minimal back and forth. If you're a brand testing a new SKU or customizing a small batch, factories usually say no or price is too high that it feels like one. That's when traders step in. They combine orders from different clients, make the MOQ possible, and turn something the factory doesn't want to do into something you can actually launch. Reason number two, communication. Let's be honest, communication is one of the biggest pain points in sourcing. Factories speak production, brands speak outcomes, and traders bridge that gap. They understand your timelines, your packaging expectations, your marketing deadlines, and translate that into what factories need to deliver. A good trader is half project manager, half translator. Reason number three, risk absorption. Here's the part nobody talks about. When a factory messes up an order, they move on to the next production run. When a trader messes up, they lose your business entirely. Good traders protect their relationships by fixing issues, covering small losses, or pulling in back up factories to keep things on schedule. They take the heat before you do. So next time someone says cut the middleman, think twice. Sometimes the middleman is the only one keeping your supply chain together.
