Grant Cardone grew up in Lake Charles, Louisiana, a refinery town where his father died when he was ten. He rejected the low-wage trades around him and credits these hardships with driving his ambition to succeed.

It's fair to say that I did have advantages. Okay, let me tell you about my advantages, okay? I was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, in a refinery town. And I looked around and said, I do not want to be a fucking pipefitter. I don't want to be a fisherman. I don't want to be earning $8 an hour and paying $2 to the government. That's an advantage I have. I was like, I don't like this scene. I don't want to be dirty every day. I lost my father when I was 10 years old. I was raised by a single mom. That was an advantage to me.
