I Cut Open A Three Foot Deep Wasp Nest With A Chainsaw

Laurence Edwards and Zane cut into a three-foot-deep wasp nest with a chainsaw. The vacuum dies, wasps attack repeatedly, and they find dozens of queen wasps preparing to overwinter inside the log.

Oh, my battery's dead as well. That is not what we need. They've tunnelled all the way into the loft. Let's get out of here, Zane. Let's get out. Right, no sting there, but that was a wasp trying to sting me kind of just above the eye there, which is— that is not good. Not a good start. So I'm going to come back. I'm going to retreat. Let's get our veils up. And before we do that, let me talk you through the plan. So I've got the bee vac here. which is also a good wasp vac. The idea is pretty simple. We're gonna go up, we're gonna suck all of the bees out of that wasp with the bee vac. We're gonna chainsaw the nest off. We're gonna take it over there, see what's inside, and then let the guys get on with their job of moving those logs. Are you scared, Xand? I'm a little bit scared.
I am, because I've not encountered wasps or nests or anything like that, so. But surely, we've got a bee suit on, we should be safe.
Famous last words. Let's get on with it. Let's have a look at this wasp's nest, Zane. It is huge. Right, so I can already feel the wasps getting a little bit annoyed. I'm going to get the bee vac ready to go, get as many wasps from the outside into it as possible, and I think it's going to create like a mass exodus of wasps coming out because they're going to feel like they're under attack. And then once we've done that, we'll get the chainsaw in, we'll chop it off there, and we're going to take it off somewhere easier to have a look. Yeah. All right, let's do it. All right. They are definitely getting a bit angry, but it's fine because we'll just keep on hoovering them up.
Yeah, I was getting, uh, getting bombarded then.
I, I am. Yeah, you're good down there. Yeah. Ah, ow! No, I got stung. Will you jump off there, stinging? You go, you go down, Zane, mate. Oh, my battery's dead as well. That is not what we need. Okay, we've got a bit of a problem. The battery's run out and I've not factored this in, and now the wasps are going a little bit bonkers. Doesn't it? Oh, it feels like it's blocked. Feels like I've lost pressure. That's really not what I want. Oh, they've gone a bit angry though. So we've got the main wasp's nest over there, but I cannot believe it, they've tunneled all the way into the log. I don't know how far it goes back. I don't know how far I can get the chainsaw in to get it out, but I'm going to try and get as much as I possibly can. They're still going back. That's huge. Wow, and they're all coming out at that end as well. Wow, that's a massive wasp nest. Ah, well, I'm being stung. Retreat, retreat.
What do you think's worse, a wasp sting or a honeybee sting?
So for me, 100% a wasp. Yeah. I have like, not an allergic reaction, but I'll be itching for a week, I reckon, now. Right, current situation. We've got one jumbo wasp's nest there. It's tunnelled all the way back into the logs. I've gone and chopped another big section of log out and I've still not got to the end. They're just going back and back and back. So I'm going to go in for one more attempt, but I just got to get some of the wasps first because there's too many and I'm getting stung.
That's pretty cool, isn't it?
That is pretty cool, isn't it? So that's where it tunnelled all the way into the piece of wood, finally got the bit out. Looks to be lots of queen wasps in here as well, ready to go out and find their homes for overwintering. So I'm no wasp expert, but I know it's the time of the year where they send out the queens, and this is the safest, deepest, darkest tip of the wasp's nest, right at the back. And there's still loads of wasps and loads of these queens that are going out. Now I'm going to give them a chance to get out, and I'll show you everything that is in this section. But I have to say, I'm super excited about going into the big section at the end of this video. Next job, we're going to cut this in a couple of sections and open it up. This is the big wasp section where they have literally tunnelled all the way through. There'll be loads of wasps in here, I reckon.
All right, what's next then? Are we going to open up the big one, or—
We're going to open up the big one. The reason I'm not going any further is just kind of the same. You see like 4 layers, so it's all gonna be that layer there. I'm gonna take that one home, Zane. This is the nest that I'm most excited about, and the vast majority of the wasps are out of it now. But what I'm gonna do, Zane, is I'm gonna put it on there, and I'm gonna cut straight through the middle and give you a cross-section of a wasp's nest so you can see inside. Ah! Ah! So that's another wasp's nest Ow! And I have to say, I really don't like doing the wasps' nests. One, I'm scared of them. They are not nice and they attack you. But two, like, they're really cool insects, and just looking at their nests here, I marvel at them every single time and think wasps are the good guys. However, wasps can completely overtake your beehives if not managed properly, so I'll stick a link at the bottom of this video for my wasp survival kit to give you everything you need to keep your bees safe against the wasps.
