Archery and Fitness at the 2023 Knockdown Challenge!!

Video coverage of the November Knockdown Challenge finals (YouTube). Hosts Tom Hogue and Chad lead the event featuring competitors (e.g., Dale Beatty, Riot Rhett, Schuyler Mittsag, Jeff Cordero, Britt Mase, Brandon Willett) who qualified online. The program blends fitness and archery across multiple short, intense workouts: running laps (0.6 mile), ruck runs with weighted Goruck packs, sled drags (40 yards each way), sandbag movements (ground-to-shoulder, front squat, over-shoulder, hoists of 10 reps), and timed/accuracy archery tasks (20-yard shots at stations; a final two-part stage including a 68-yard, 3-minute cap long shot with three shots, followed by pack/sandbag packout(s) and a final Iron Bison shot). The event awards pro-staff spots and a $10,000 prize; athletes give post-workout reactions describing the day as humbling, intense, and communal.

Sam.
Oh, baby. What's up, everyone?
What's up, people?
To the November Knockdown final. Yeah. Chad, you excited for this?
Yo, I'm excited, bro. I can't wait to see these guys go down.
All the competitors here today went through and did an online qualifier, right? So with the November Knockdown Challenge, we started that in November, of course, and really it was to combine physical fitness and accuracy together. Usually November starts getting colder, people get a little bit more complacent overall. And really, when we had the idea of creating the November Knockdown Challenge, it was just to be able to go bring some awareness to people's lives, right? Really give them a little bit of a competitive piece, amp them up, get them excited about something, and really just throw a little bit of competitive piece in there. Overall.

Hey, I'm Jessica Crane. I'm 28 years old and I'm from Prineville, Oregon. Clint Kingston, 37, McCammon, Idaho.
All right, what's up, everyone? Welcome to the November Knockdown Championship.
We're excited to have each and every one of you guys out here. We have a lot of phenomenal individuals. If you guys are here, I want you to understand that you have earned this right. This is not something that is given in life. Nothing is just given for free. It's always going to be earned within our ecosystem. It's always going to be earned, right? There's a lot of cases, there's a lot of participation trophies that ultimately happen within society. Today, Today there is going to be a winner. I know it takes a lot, you know, to go get away, not get away, but ultimately travel away from, from your families, your kids. It's time. Just like Sal had gone through and said yesterday, like, that's not something we take for granted, right? I'm super, super proud and humbled to have each and every one of you guys here. This has been a two year thing in the making. And it's just, it's honestly like a surreal thing overall for myself personally. But, but I want you guys to all understand, like, this is about you, right? Today is about you. It is about you going through, putting in the work and really creating a ripple effect in the communities, the friends, the families, everyone around you and honestly into the entire outdoor community itself.
So for the first workout, okay, they're gonna have on the count of three, two, one, go. A 0.6 mile run. They're gonna take a straight out shot across the dam here, go around the lake, lapping back up and around and then coming back to the shed. That's step one of the workout. Following the 0.6 mile run, after they've completed that shot, they take off for a second run. In this run, I didn't say it earlier, they're actually doing it with a full Goruk pack on their back.
Right?
So guys, 50 pounds or 30 pounds, women, 20 pounds. Okay, taking off with it. Add a little bit of a resistance piece to it. They're going to go out and complete that lap again, come back and they're going to do 20 air squats for that second round. Okay, they're going out for a third lap. This is where it's going to get spicy. And we're honestly, we're going to see a lot of separation at least. I feel like.
3, 2, 1.
Round number two. We got the pack in, we got one sled drag down and back. So how far is that?
So they're going to be going down 60 yard or. Sorry. They're going to go down 40 yards and back 40 yards. So a total of 80. There we go. D Got it, baby. Put me in the spot.
The crazy thing is there's some sl, there's some slant. So the thing is with that, huh?
Yeah. It's going to feel like 100, but.
If they come in too hot though, they're going to go well past that.
So here's, here's the thing that's going to be that I think is going to happen in this one is we're going to see people come out hot because it's a downhill slope. They're going to get to the end and this sled is going to roll over, it's going to tip on them, it's going to flip. They're going to come out of it and they're going to come back up. And as soon as they turn around and start running up that hill with that weight, it's just going to like hit the brakes. Kind of thing. And it's going to become more a dog fight.
Yep.
Oh, shit moment.
No shit moment.
All right. And then so they do it down, back, and then immediately they go into 10 sandbag. Ground to shoulder.
Yep, ground to shoulder. So they're taking that sandbag.
Yep.
£50. Go, Rut bag. Yep, all the way up. Coming right up to the top.
Okay, like that. Then they take one shot.
Take one shot. So they're gonna have a shot set out just about 20 yards. Okay. They're gonna take a shot, and then they're gonna continue the workout. Yep. Right back. Right back over to the.
We're gonna do another sled down and back. Then we're gonna do 10 sandbag, front squat.
Second round of sled drags coming up that hill. Same distance. Nope. Distance not gonna change this.
One take one shot. Then they go all the way back around. We're gonna do one more sled drag down and back 10, sandbag over the shoulder.
Yep.
So literally just.
I'm launching it.
Literally just take it over the shoulder. Yep, gotcha.
And then they're gonna finish with one shot. So it's gonna be a quick finish.
Yep, quick finish.
Let me know.
Just went through, got done with workout number two. Two competitors are down rehydrating. Honestly, a handful of them said that it was bad. This was bad.
That ended real fast, actually.
Yeah, ended really, really fast. Like, that was Britt. She's like, this was so much worse.
Than the last one.
But we're gonna go into workout number three now. Okay, so workout number three is actually gonna be an individual workout. So it's gonna be a waterfall style workout.
Right.
So really, how the entire order of which the athletes are going to go through and participate in the third workout. Yeah. Is the one who finished first is going to start workout number three.
Why is that?
Just because with the waterfall style workout, making sure that we're not getting anyone backed up for overall slower athletes throughout that piece. So we're going to have a good separation. So within this workout, they're actually going to take off with their ruck pack on. They're going to also have their sandbag and their bow. They're going to take off to a tree hoist where they have to take their sandbag, clip it in, and do 10 sandbag hoists. That's station number one. After they've done the 10 hoist, they're going to go through and take a shot at a target. Okay. That target is going to be set out about 20 yards. Okay. They have the Option to go through in range finding.
Okay.
Okay. Each one of these positions more real world scenario. Side of things. We have different targets that set at different ranges for four different.
Setup positions.
Sam.
Last and final one. This is the big dog. What do we call this?
A little present?
Little gift? Little gift.
I call this one. It's all fun and games until you put one down. Oof.
All right, so we got two parts here, Part A and part B. So part A, we have a three minute time cap long shot of 68 yards. And they get three shots total.
Three shots. Three shots total. So putting a little bit of a pressure on them with a three minute cap. Okay. So they could take the whole three minutes or up to that part to take all three shots. Focus on it. But their score is based off of their shot time, plus or minus their actual accuracy. Right. So real world scenarios like, like you gotta make a quick decision and you gotta be able to like, execute on it really, really quick. So that's part A to that part. To take all three shots. Focus on it. But their score is based off of their shot time, plus or minus their actual accuracy. Right. So real world scenarios like you gotta make a quick decision and you gotta be able to like, execute on it really, really quick. So that's part A.
All right, Part B. It's gonna start literally at the three minute mark. So we're gonna have a goruck sandbag back to camp. Oh, okay. All right, we got part B. It's gonna start literally at the three minute mark. So we're gonna have a goruck sandbag back to camp. Oh, okay. I read this bow and arrow back to camp. Time stops after shooting. I read this bow and arrow back to camp. Tom stops after shooting the bison back at camp.
So they're gonna go through and they could choose either to pack out their bow.
Bison back at camp.
So they're gonna go through and they could choose either to pack out their bow and their pack first. Yep. Or they could take this sand ball and their pack first. They could alternate it back and forth, but it's at least two trips they gotta pack. Let's say the sandball back run back to where they went through and harvest it and their pack first. Or they could take this sandball and their pack first. Or they could alternate it back and forth, but it's at least two trips they gotta pack. Let's say the sandball back run back to where they went through and harvested. Yep. And then pack out their gear. Yeah. As well. And then their final. Their final Shot or the. The buzzer I call, like, the dinner bell side of it. They gotta take one shot at the Iron Bison.
Yep. And then pack out their gear as well. And then their final. Their final shot or the. The buzzer I call, like, the dinner bell side of it is they gotta take one shot at the iron B.
Everybody, my name is Dale Beatty. I apologize for my voice right now. My luck.
Hurt from the pain that just was. Ensued during that workout. But I got my good friend Riot here. Riot. We just finished the third round of the November Knockdown Challenge finals.
Fourth round.
Fourth round. See, I don't even know where I'm at right now. How was it? What are your thoughts? What do you want to tell the people?
Dale, I've. I've made a lot of jokes all day.
That's.
That's my forte. But you just said it best. That was.
Humbling. Yeah, to say the least. We're both bodybuilder guys. This is not our thing.
Cardio is.
Everybody, my name is Dale Beatty. I apologize for my voice right now. My. Not our thing.
If that just taught us anything, we know where to go home and work harder, get better.
It definitely established our weaknesses that we have as power lifters, as the big bodies that we have, the physiques that we have. Skyler, get over here. Got a question for you. What are your final thoughts of Hung's hurt from the pain that just was ensued during that workout. But I got my good friend Riot here. Riot. We just finished the third round of the November Knockdown challenge finals. Fourth round today.
That was torture, especially that last one. But it's fun.
Ain't even talk as in amazing experience.
I'd do it again in a heartbeat. And I just want to thank everybody that put this on. It was awesome experience.
Have you ever experienced anything like this before in your life?
No. I mean, I've done a lot of CrossFit competitions, but nothing compares to this.
First warm outdoors experience. More.
Yeah.
That's the tagline. Yeah.
Yeah.
November Knockdown Challenge. I don't know. I don't know. I. This man passed me multiple times today. I'll stay in the back of the packs. I want. I wanted to watch how everybody else was doing, so I, you know, I chose to stay. I don't even know where I'm at right now. How was it? What are your thoughts? What do you want to tell the people?
Dale? I've. I've made a lot of jokes all day.
That's.
That's my forte. But you just said it best. That was humbling to say the least. We're both bodybuilder guys. This is not our thing.
Cardio is towards the back. For majority of the day. You chose to stay towards the front. So not our thing thing.
If.
If that just taught us anything, we know where to go home and work harder, get better.
It definitely. What was the view like from the front of the November Knockdown Challenge? What are your thoughts on the day?
Dude, it was a burner, to say the least. Man, I could barely move right now. I put it all out there. Yeah, it felt great.

Can't even talk.
It was an amazing experience.
I'd do it again in a heartbeat. And I just want to thank everybody that put this on. It was awesome experience.
Have you ever experienced anything like this.
Before in your life?
No.
I mean, I've done a lot of CrossFit competitions, but nothing compares to this.
Earth Swarm outdoors experience. More amazing. Yeah, that's the tagline experience.
That's what we did.
November Knockdown Challenge. I don't know. I don't know. I. This man passed me multiple times today. I stayed in the back of the packs. I want. I wanted to watch how everybody else was doing, so I, you know, I chose to stay.
