Lenny Rachitsky argues that senior employees give more value than they get back, especially as they age and care more about time than money. Product leaders work grueling hours for decades while compensation stays flat. Negotiating fairly isn't greedy, it's recognizing the real imbalance.

Usually a company is extracting much more value out of you naturally, especially as we age in our career. The more senior we get, the balance is always unfair. The older you get, the less important money becomes, because when you're 80 years old, 90 years old, you're looking back at your life. You don't want more money, you want more time, and you're getting less and less of it. The older you get, that exchange becomes unfair very quickly. You're giving all of your best to a company, and oftentimes your family gets the rest of you, especially a lot of product leaders here, a lot of folks that have been just on the grind, 12-hour, 16-hour days for 15, 20 years. So you're not being greedy. You're giving the best of you to a company that's going to profit a lot off of you. And if you understand that value exchange, you can have that conversation with confidence.
