Lenny Rachitsky says AI will hit farming, mining, and construction hardest in the next 5-10 years. These industries face aging workforces, with the average farmer in their late 50s and retiring soon. AI will fill labor gaps rather than eliminate jobs, similar to how trucking shifted when workers moved to flexible gig work.

I think the real impact of AI in the next 5 to 10 years really is going to be in farming, in mining, in construction. These industries, they need autonomy and it couldn't come soon enough. If you look at farmers, the average age of a farmer is in their late 50s. What does that mean in 10 years from now? Many of those farmers are going to be retiring if they're not already retired. In the 1980s and the 1990s, doing the long-haul trucking job was what the family has to sacrifice. The father not being there And today that same working class family can make that decision and say, you know what, I will drive for Uber or DoorDash, and I'm willing to do that because I can turn that app off and pick up my kid, and I prioritize that. That is where I think this intelligence kind of revolution in the real world is really, I think, gonna fill those gaps in rather than an entire industry suddenly gone.
