This is a YouTube video titled "Tobi Lütke is the CEO at Shopify" containing a monologue or speech by a single speaker discussing how they handle disagreements by exploring foundational assumptions and valuing courage and trust in differing opinions. The content is from April 7, 2025.
When someone disagrees with me, I tend to immediately stop and saying, cool, let's figure out why there's disagreement. And it's almost never, I find, in the sort of, I just feel like we should do this differently. What I'm looking for is offer unstated foundational assumptions. What is our divergence point? Because you might be right. In fact, people often are when it gets to this point. I actually appreciate it because it requires courage, but it also makes me immediately trust the person more, partly because I think they will do what they think is right Rather than what is convenient. Agreeing with sort of a group tends to be much more convenient.
