Eric Thomas recalls finding his birth certificate at age 12 while homeless and describes how his emotional state at the time kept him trapped despite knowing the facts. He argues that emotional decisions create emotional consequences, and learning to think rationally instead of reacting emotionally is the key to changing your life.

This is the time to get control of your mind. Let's go back to the 12-year-old that found the birth certificate. We found the birth certificate in the emotional state. I'm not the first kid who has ever gone through this experience. And you know what I had to ask myself in that mirror at 16, 17, 18? When you saw it, why did you see it that way? Why did you not call your mom and say, Mom, we talk about this? I went from a ball of emotions to living in abandoned buildings. I put myself in so much danger as a 12-year-old homeless, the same document, nothing changed about it. But if I could go back as this adult and look at that, I would look at it as facts and go, wow, your mother protected you, but emotion wouldn't let me be rational. So I would say when you make emotional decisions, you get emotional consequences.
