In this brief talk, Dr. Daniel Amen challenges the popular maxim “don’t worry, be happy,” labeling it a lie. He argues that a certain amount of anxiety is essential because it drives people to take the right actions, and consistently doing those right actions leads to genuine happiness. Reflecting on his psychiatric practice, he explains that while his initial instinct was to lower anxiety for all patients, he has learned that for some individuals the therapeutic goal is actually to increase anxiety to a functional level that motivates constructive behavior.
