Tom Bilyeu used to skip small talk and ask strangers about their biggest dreams instead. He learned that real intimacy builds through time and shared experiences, not forced deep conversations. Watching football together for weeks creates more trust than occasional profound talks.
Chapters
I've hated small talk my entire life. When I was younger, I kind of had this naive view of, like, I should never have to do small talk. I should just go deep with everybody I meet from day one. What's your life's biggest dream? If you only had a year to live, what would you do with it? You know, like, all these questions that I used to ask in my 20s, and I think as I've gotten older, I've appreciated that. You can't force depth and intimacy because a huge component of intimacy is simply time. In many cases, you can develop more trust and comfort and intimacy hanging out with a friend, watching football games every week for a few years than you can like having these super deep, profound conversations. It's simply spending time together.
