If you really are sincere and you're really real and you really give and you tell the truth—
oh, let's go baby!
You can write your own ticket. You can make this world the way you want it to be. Congratulations! You guys shot downstairs. Have you seen this place?
Want to mic them up? Yeah, just so you have. This is 35,000 square feet. Oh my gosh, it's Amazing.
167 million.
I saw that. We looked on the Zillow. I was like, oh my gosh. So we are here in this incredible home, and over a decade ago we did an amazing interview on a private jet.
When my wife and I met, my wife— we both grew up very poor, but I decided that I was going to find a way to add so much value that money would never be a question for my family. And, and You know, it would never stop me from giving or doing or sharing anything. And I made that decision early on.
And now over a decade later, we're doing another epic interview in this home here in Bel Air.
Pretty amazing home. 4 stories high. Downstairs, there's the most amazing areas, you know, for spa areas. And all these doors open up. So this spiral staircase that goes up all 4 stories, and you're looking right over the Bel Air Country Club and Century City. So it's just cool. So living the dream.
I'm about to interview Tony, and I've had him on the show many times. The last time I had him on the show was a few years ago, but he has learned and created so much in the last few years that every time I'm around him, I just, I feel like I gain wisdom, I gain knowledge, I gain lessons. And he's one of the legends in our industry, and so it's always fun to be around Tony whenever I get the chance to interview him. Man, this— I've actually never driven through Bel Air. It's pretty nice. Maybe you should get a vlog for this whole episode. You just make one for this. And there's a lot that goes on behind the scenes to prepare for an interview like this with Tony, specifically when it's not in our set. So we're at a $150 million-plus mansion in Bel Air. We have to move our crew. We've gotta get the right equipment, the lighting, the audio. All these things have to be set. And there's just a lot of moving parts and logistics. So it's a little bit more stress. There's a little bit more challenges to try to prepare for something like this out of the School of Greatness studio when we set up with Tony. [FOREIGN LANGUAGE] You gotta clear out all that noise. And in a setting like this, there could be a lot of distractions. There's a lot of people coming and going in this house. So there's unforeseen challenges that you have to face and try to prepare for and really try to think ahead about all the things that could go wrong and how do you contain the energy How do you make sure you show up ready and prepared to deliver a great interview? I first met Tony, I think it was 10 years ago where I got to interview him for the first time, and that was like my first big episode. At the time it was just an audio podcast, and that's kind of one of the reasons why we started filming episodes, because I said we have this huge guest and I have to get this on, on video.
So how old are you now?
42. 43 in March.
That's great.
Yeah, that's great.
That's a great time.
Took me a long time to figure some stuff out, you know, still figuring it out.
Life is still figuring out for everybody. But exactly, you're, you're a man now. You're not a man when you're 25. You think you are, but you're not, you know.
You have to go through more life experience. Yeah, that's right. And so he's seen me evolve. He's also seen me go through ups and downs with relationships. A little over 5 years ago, during a private mastermind with Tony, I had a massive breakthrough around my personal struggles.
Can I coach you directly as a friend? Please do. You got to stop finding what you're looking for in order to justify protecting yourself. 95% of success in a relationship is selection. It's not the selection you're thinking. It's not who you select. It's which part of yourself you select to bring to this relationship and who primarily is the person who selects within themself to be in relationship with you. You have to be able to go deeper. You got to be this kind of vulnerability that you're being with me right now, which I want to thank you for just as a friend. I'm a friend of yours even though we might only talk once every year and a half because I get who you are at a soulful level, not who you project. Who you project's a really great guy too, but I'm more interested in this guy I see right here because this guy will touch people's lives. This guy can have a level of fulfillment most people never have. The other guy will succeed. Success is getting what you fucking want. Fulfillment is bringing what you're made for to those you love and those you've learned to love.
And I think the thing that Tony really taught me the most is to value myself and create boundaries in intimacy so that I don't lose myself. And so I've really appreciated that time with him because he's kind of always been this checkpoint every time I see him to see how I'm doing emotionally, where I'm at in my relationships. And thank God I'm in a great place in my relationship with Martha right now.
Martha's your wife? Martha. Martha.
Martha. Yeah.
How long you been together?
And I want you to know that I love you very much. I appreciate you very much. I'm blessed that you want to be with me and that we are in each other's lives because it is truly a gift to wake up next to you every single morning and see you smile with courage, love, and purity in your heart.
Every day I wake up in the morning I am really excited because I usually wake up earlier than he does. And I wake up and I'm grateful to God, and I see him and I think, "Oh my God, I cannot wait for him to wake up so we can start living," you know, and we can do— Yeah, I just love him very much.
Lewis and Martha, you're surrounded by people who love you, who believe in you, who cheer you on, celebrate your life. In the cause and power invested in me, I pronounce you husband and wife. And you may kiss your bride. Turn around and face everyone. May I present to you Mr. and Mrs. Howes. When Erwin asked me what are 3 words that represent Martha, and for me the first one was courage, and I told him it was courage because she is such a courageous woman woman in everything that she takes on in her life. And she is very adventurous and creative and talented and beautiful, obviously. But courage to me is the quality that I think is one of the hardest to have. You can be born with beauty, you can be born with talent in certain things, but courage I think you have to develop over time. So that was one of my first words for you, and I just think you're a beautiful, courageous woman. So I love you, I'm grateful for you, and thank you for being a blessing in my life.
It is my intention. To remember that I am worthy so I can fully receive your love, to continue to accept you with all of your colors, to cheer you in all of your dreams, and to remember that you are not responsible for my happiness, that you don't make me happy, you make me happier. You know, I am very close to my family, and from today, you become my family. I am so happy you chose me, and I am so happy I chose you.
My wedding was incredible. We really designed the experience the way we envisioned it. I want this to feel like relaxed and fun and free and moving around and connecting with people and bringing great people together. And there's music and dancing and mariachi and the whole thing, and it was just a special experience in Mexico. And one we will always remember.
So state is the controlling factor in everything, in a relationship. Congratulations.
Thank you.
You've got your two daughters and your wife. We talked for many years about relationships together.
We did. I struggled for many years.
No, but you did it right.
I needed to learn a new story. I needed to learn a new story and I needed to kind of heal that story.
That's right.
And create a different one for myself so that I could attract the wife that I have now. That's right.
But even before you got the story, you had to get the state.
Yes.
When the state was there, it became easier to get the story.
I was living in fear a lot in intimacy. It just blew my mind that there was two human beings inside of Martha that were growing. And it's crazy to see them from the smallest heartbeats and then growing over time through the different ultrasounds. And just seeing them continue to grow. It's almost like you can see their face and their personalities. You're entering a world that a lot of people will say is very chaotic, and in some ways there are a lot of things around the world that are not so good right now. But our intention is to create a world and an environment for you that is full of love, peace, harmony, support, family, encouragement, acceptance, play, adventure. Now turn around. Oh my gosh. So even though there's a lot of challenges in the world, our goal is to create an environment where you thrive emotionally, physically, spiritually, and you allow yourself to have a creative expression and you feel supported to be who you are. At this time, It's the first time I feel like I'm ready in my life to be a father. And I don't think I could have said that 5 or 10 years ago.
What is your deepest fear? Same as every other human. I'm not enough and I won't be loved. So you spent your whole life proving you're more than enough. But now you're still worried you won't be loved. Because they don't have any relationship.
I don't think I was emotionally ready for it, personally. Now I'm sure if I had children sooner, I would have figured it out and I would have done my best. But I truly feel like I'm emotionally, physically, spiritually, financially prepared, and I have more tools to hopefully be a better father than I would have been 10 years ago. The worst thing a parent can do is give their child everything without boundaries, discipline, values, so that you can thrive and not be a victim to your environment. So that's what we want for you. We want you to feel loved and accepted. We want you to feel lots of self-worth and confidence. That's my message to you. There you go. Te amo muchísimo.
Yo también.
Again, this goes back to Tony. Just, he's been a consistent of trying to support me and be a mirror for what's possible to healing certain things that were holding me back. And so I really feel like I've done a lot of the healing work, and I still have a long way to go in a lot of areas, but I've done a lot to be ready to be a father now.
First-time parent, right?
Oh man, yeah.
And you got two of them simultaneously. Do the same thing you do with anything else. You want to jump into parenting and learn everything you can about it so when things happen, you know the pattern in advance.
Yeah.
You have a great state, you have a great story, and you have a great strategy. Certain things, they're predictable. When you have your first child, for example, most people, the first child, the child gets really sick and they freak out, they run to the doctor. If they have 4 kids, by the time they get the 4th kid, they don't care about the last one. You get an earache, they can't— you care just as much, but you go, it's It's part of this stage. It's a problem, but you don't freak out about the problem.
Yeah.
Same thing in a business. In a business, when you understand the patterns, each stage has predictable challenges and opportunities. And the more you can know the pattern in advance, the more you can anticipate. Anticipation is power. Reaction puts you in fear. And so you found the right state, the right story, and then you found the right lady, right?
Exactly. I was certain it was going to be uncertain.
Yes.
And I would be okay.
And that— extrapolate that to life and it changes anybody's life.
I woke up at 3 AM. I couldn't sleep and I was up at 3. Excited and I'm nervous because I wanted to clear, I wanted to finalize all today because this is like a rare opportunity to essentially take over a club. There's maybe like 20, 30 clubs in the country. So I was going to start my own club. I did not want to take over a handball team. I had played in a tournament the previous year where there was a president who said he was retiring from the team, and he allowed me and another friend of mine to bring this team together and to bring on the people that we wanted to, to go play. We won this tournament and we qualified for the World Championships. This president of that team came out of retirement. He essentially said, well, you guys won, I'm coming back to take over. And for me, that didn't feel right. I was with Martha when this was all happening, and she said, ask God where he needs you to be. And so I literally just was like, okay, God, where do you need me to be? I kid you not, within less than an hour, I got a text message from the president of the Los Angeles Handball Club that said, hey, what's it going to take for you to be a part of the LA team? In order for me to do this and play with LA, I would need to be the full owner. I would need the president. I would need to have control over everything. That's what it would take for me. I just kind of said, this is everything it would take, thinking that he would say, okay, that's too much. And he says, that sounds like a good plan. And I'm like, what? I'm here in LA. I've played with LA before. I like the community obviously here and what they create. They have a court they practice at already, so I don't know, have to find my own new court. They have kind of a structure. They have social media assets. I wouldn't have to create anything new. I would just take them all over. If we're going to do this, we need to act with speed because the first tournament is in a month and I need to start recruiting players. I need to buy the jerseys. I need to like do all these things. Hello? Hey, can you hear me? Yep, I hear you. Did Abe get back with the contract yet or no? Contract, yes, Abe sent it. ¡Hola! And it became a mission, a goal, and a dream to learn how to play handball. From living in Ohio on my sister's couch to moving to New York City a few years later, to playing with the New York City team, to then making the national team within 9 months, to then traveling with the national team for a decade all around the world, then getting injured, taking a number of years off, and then coming back in 2024. And that's when I played in Spain for 6 weeks, training for one of the top clubs. And then I played at the North American Championships, and this is where we won and qualified for the World Championships. I went out and got sponsors. We got True Classic. Friend of mine who runs True Classic supported us, funded us to help us bring great players together and sponsor the jersey, all these different things, to then taking over the Los Angeles Handball Club. All these things happening, it has been an unfolding of events.
The title was The Will to Win. And it was my life. It was like— I could cry just thinking about it. It was so intense. I mean, reading it and crying, just going, I'm only here still, all that I've been through, because of my pure will that I will not give up. And that made me believe that if you really are sincere and you're really real and you really give and you tell the truth, you can write your own ticket. You can make this world the way you want it to be.
Here we go, listen to this. Congratulations, you are the proud new owner of the LA Team Handball Club. All signed, I sent over just now, I forwarded to your email the fully executed copy. Abe, thanks so much for turning around the acquisition of a handball club within 36 hours and making this great. That was the lawyer. The lawyer saying everything is signed, everything is complete, and I am officially the owner of the LA Handball Club. Putting together the GoFundMe real quick. I'm gonna make an announcement here in probably 30 minutes. So I'm gonna try to blast it out with, uh, in the next 30 minutes to my social media, and I'll put it on the LA page. I'm gonna try to collaborate with bigger handball pages as well. Put the press release out, do the whole thing. I'm not only excited to pursue my Olympic dream but also dedicated to helping other athletes chase theirs. Music on. Okay, ready? Let's go. It's taking a minute. I also have to go over to— there we go. Boom!
Let's go! Oh, let's go!
It's probably gonna be slow. Slow right now, but I think he's live. Let's go, here we go, here we go. Oh, let's go, baby! 16K, really? Let's go, $20,000! Let's go, boom! We need $100,000. Seamus, $100,000, let's go! Who? My friend Brendan Bouchard just donated $10,000. Holy moly! My other friend, Darman, I just called, $5,000 donation. Brandon Bouchard, $10,000 donation. Adam Braun, $1,000. Anthony O'Neill, $1,000. Martin, $1,000. All these people are just, man, they're showing up. I gotta call this guy and just say thank you. That's huge.
I hear you're going for the Olympics in handball?
Handball, team handball.
Wow.
Yes, I've been on a 17.5-year journey. Holy shit. I actually brought a ball. I was gonna show it to you. So this is a handball.
Oh, wow.
So it's kind of like a smaller soccer ball. You dribble it, you jump in the air, you throw it.
So what are the rules on dribbling? Like, how many—
You can dribble, like, unlimited, right? But you can't— once you pick it up, you can take 3 steps. So if I'm dribbling, I can take 3 steps. Then I have to either pass or shoot.
OK. How many guys?
It's 6 on 6 with 2— with a goalie.
With a goalie.
OK. Yeah, so 7 on 7. It's like indoor soccer.
Oh, so it's like 2 goals on each side. 2 goals.
It's like a big basketball court.
And what's the size of it?
It's like 120 feet. 20-something feet, I think it is. Yeah, it's maybe an extra 10 feet on each side of a basketball court. Okay, it's an extra 10 or 20 feet, so it's a little bit longer. It's fast.
That's great.
Scores like 25, 30 points a game for each team.
How long are the periods?
60 minutes total. Yeah, two halves. Two halves.
You go full blast for boom, sprinting, hitting, jumping, all that stuff. I love that. Why isn't that caught on here?
That's what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to help bring the awareness here. You go to Europe, it's sold-out arena.
If you could do well here, I know, and get people's attention, that would be igniting. That'd be cool. Father of the new sport.
Exactly. That's the goal. That's really cool. This plan, maybe this works out, maybe it doesn't work out, I don't know. But this might be where God wants me and where God needs me to be here in Los Angeles more and to be playing with a team that I can develop and is also It's also going to be the home of the Olympics in 3 years. So this could be the hub where other great athletes come from all over the world to want to come and play handball in the United States. This could be America's team in Los Angeles. The last time that Los Angeles won a national championship was 16 years ago. And in order to be successful, we needed to find a way to change the environment, the energy, the brand, the communication, the values, so that we can build a team of great athletes, of great handball players, and great human beings who want to win, who have the will to win. Hey, my name is Lewis Howes. I'm the new owner and president of the Los Angeles Handball Club. This is the first tournament here in Chicago, and it's a great start to the season so far. I'm just grateful for the opportunity to get back on the court, to have an amazing coach who has been leading us and guiding us with the right directions. And it's just so good to see a lot of these guys that I used to play with on the national team and other players in Los Angeles as well. These different players coming from everywhere of America, coming from the world, let's say. Come together, just do one practice, and then play. So step 1, win a national championship. Step 2, go to the North American Championship and win that. Step 3, take it to the World Championship and do our best as a club amateur team to play against the biggest professional teams in the world. So far, we're having a great time getting to know each other, coming together, playing playing it fast. I was really excited with this project. It's something that's new and fresh towards USA handball. Lewis brought in a great team and a great roster and a great foundation for something new and exciting. Really exciting time for our sport. In the Olympics, we will be qualified as the host country, which is something that hasn't happened since '96. Olympics is always the goal for any athlete, right? It's the largest competition, it's the most recognized, most global competition. So already there's a lot of buzz There's a lot of excitement. There's a lot of energy happening around LA handball. People are just excited about what we're creating. It's clear that the United States is going to have a team in the Olympics. That's for sure. You can see a clear evolution in the last years. There's more people showing interest. So there's a great opportunity leading into the Olympics for the next few years to try to create momentum, to try to create more marketing and awareness around the sport and trying to make this the center, the epicenter of handball in the USA in LA for the Olympics.
Here we go. LA on 3. 1, 2, 3. Courage does not mean you're not afraid. It means you're afraid, but you do it anyway. You can have courage if you can trust in a higher understanding that everything has higher purpose and this is an unfolding for me.
Yes.
And it's gonna lead to something greater. And that takes faith. But I found if you live enough life over and over again with that faith and with the drive to find it, you'll find those answers.
Tony, thank you so much, man. Appreciate it.
Appreciate it.
Amazing.
Congratulations once again on your wife, on your two daughters.
Thank you.
And I'm going to look to see you in 2028.
You're going to be at the Olympics.
I'm coming. You invite me, I'll be there. You got it.
Next time on Chasing Greatness. Tens of thousands of people from around the world are here tonight The stakes are massive, the energy is electric, and by the end of it, one team will rise above all others to claim the title of European Handball Champion. You are going to be so loved by both of us. Yes. And we are very excited to meet you. We'll see you soon.
See you soon.
