The Most Emotional Day of Our Lives (Our Birth Story)

In this intimate vlog, Lewis Howes and his wife Martha Higareda recount the whirlwind journey leading up to the birth of their twin daughters. The narrative begins with the surprise discovery of Martha’s pregnancy and the revelation that they were expecting twins. They share moments of joy (first ultrasounds, a trip to Spain where Lewis pursued handball, and a pilgrimage to Lourdes) and fear (a home break‑in, bleeding during travel, and the uncertainty of pregnancy complications). The couple describes the labor and delivery, including the first baby’s healthy cry, the second’s struggle to breathe, a brief NICU stay, and Martha’s battle with severe pre‑eclampsia that required emergency care. Spiritual themes run throughout, with prayers, the rosary, visits to Lourdes and Saint Joseph’s Hospital, and gratitude to God, the Virgin Mary, and Providence. They reflect on baptism, the symbolism of marrying in the same church where their children were baptized, and their hopes for the twins to grow up in love, adventure, and faith. The video ends with a heartfelt vision of life one week after the twins’ arrival, expressing deep love, gratitude, and a sense of purpose.
Chapters
One week away. What are you most excited about?
Do you guys do the thing? Take one, pup.
All right, are you guys ready? We found out that we were pregnant. We got a phone call. I remember because we were upstairs.
Hola, ya me llegaron los resultados. Que está bien positiva. Ah! Part of me felt like, what if it didn't happen? First, it was finding out that I was pregnant. And the other thing is to find out that they were twins.
Yes.
Because it was a different thing.
That was kind of the start of the journey.
Yeah.
Let's show the belly where you're at right now.
OK.
Stand up.
Can you see? Oh. Oh, sweet pea. Ah, the water broke.
Belly.
Sí.
Yes.
Ah. So how's it feel being pregnant?
It feels like the stakes are higher obviously right at this moment I'm 3 people into one you have three people yes it's true because we have twins yes I forgot I said it we waited months until we announced it we shot a video right here that mom dad oh yeah and then another half of that twin but it wasn't until we were in the ultrasound for the first time when we heard doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-bum bum bum bum dum dum duh-duh and then a second I was like, oh, this is like, hits my body.
I remember that moment for you.
You hope everything goes well. You hope they're healthy. You hope like there's no complications.
For me, there were two big moments of anxiety. One of them was you were traveling and then suddenly I'm bleeding. That day specifically, it happened to be that my brother and his wife were staying at the house. We started praying the rosary. And then I felt peace. And then immediately after we finished it, the bleeding went away.
I went to Spain to go pursue my handball dream. And so I was playing in Spain for a few weeks. Then Martha came out. Before she came out, this home got broken into. What's in here?
This is something broken in.
They broke through glass all over the place. They came through the window.
And that was very scary because our home is a sanctuary. It's our home. It's not a house. It's our home. It's a sacred place. Yes.
It felt like someone was taking advantage of us at the highest level. You know, someone was watching us. Someone was planning this. And it feels like a big threat.
And when I was here, I don't know why, but I just had a feeling. And I said, what if tonight I stay at my mom's house? Even when I was leaving the house, I remember I stayed a little bit longer to make sure that the gate would close, which can tell you that I was sensing something, but I didn't know. And so when I got home and I saw everything, I went, they did break in.
That's crazy.
So it was more like a confirmation. And then I went upstairs and the first thing I saw is the rooms ransacked. And obviously the first thing that I did was to call Lewis. Lewis, this just happened.
Holy shit. Check the cameras to see who it was because we have cameras in the front door and the back door.
I know, but remember they were deactivated after the deal.
They were deactivated?
And then was the second question was, are these people still in the house?
Yeah. What if they're still there? I didn't know if it happened right then or the night before. Call the police and get out of that house.
The police shows up, then detectives show up, then forensics show up, and I was like, wow, this is like a CSI episode.
Oh, for real?
For real. They said do not touch anything, which was also kind of horrible because it feels like, okay, you've been violated, but also everything has to stay the way it is.
Martha was protected by leaving, and our girls were protected, thankfully. And also, if I was in town, I probably would have fought back. I probably would have done something, and who knows what would have happened, but I probably would have tried to defend myself and defend them. Who knows if I'd even be here had they come in and I here.
And all that time, inside of me, I was thinking, are the babies okay? I cannot let my emotions get a hold of me because they are going to affect the babies. So I think I was very steady until the final forensics team was gone. Then I broke down.
Then she got emotional.
Then I started crying, and I was like—
it was a lot.
Yeah.
I always think, well, maybe it meant to be this way to protect us from something worse happening.
Ever since we met, we've thought about this the same way.
Look at these lovebirds, Grayson. Look at that. That's like us right now.
See, they're loving each other.
Oh, look at that. Oh, look at that. We're like the birds. We got everything situated with the house, and then Martha came out to stay with me for 3 weeks, 4 weeks in, in Spain.
Yes.
And we had an amazing time in Spain and, you know, walking around the city.
And Lewis was practicing handball, so I came to watch him how he played, and then we went game, remember? That was so cool. That's my husband pursuing his dreams.
She was like, hey, me and my mom have really wanted to go to this place in France called Lourdes. It was only like a 4 or 5-hour drive from where we were. We're like, okay, let's tag this on for a couple days. It's a spiritual place that has water that has been known to heal people.
Yes.
We're in Lourdes, France, and we're about to go to some procession.
Millions of people come here to heal and to pray and to ask for healing and good intentions. Ah, with the babies, yes. Look, can you tell now?
And the moment we got there, we checked into the the hotel and they said, oh, it's happening right now. We're like, what's happening?
The procession. It's magical. It's incredible. And there's people from everywhere in the world that go there looking for healing, whether it's healing of, you know, diseases and illnesses or the soul. Everywhere in town, they give you these candles.
And it was like, I don't know, 50,000 people walking with candles and going and praying together. And it was like this beautiful ceremony and just a magical moment that was like awe-inspiring. And almost being around thousands of people who are all having an intention and praying at the same time, praying for peace, praying for hope, praying for healing, it does something to you whether you believe in God or not. It's like when you allow your heart to open up, you allow yourself to be in the presence of prayer. Yeah. You feel it energetically and your body feels calm and relaxed. You feel peace.
After what we went through.
Yeah.
The first scare, the second scare with the breaking into the house and then having that. And then I felt, oh no, I just got to remember everything's going to be okay.
Yeah.
We're being protected. Is everything's going to be fine.
Yeah.
And I all of a sudden felt a relief and I thought, oh, all the pregnancy is going to be great after this moment.
What do you, what do you wish for both of them?
I wish for them to experience life as a wonderful adventure. And an adventure for me has always meant that you are surprised by the things that come your way. In the most positive way. Adventure for me feels like growth and seeing new things and learning new things and exploring. And if you do it holding God's hand and your parents' hands, you're going to be in really good hands. Yes. To each of you, we wish an excellent graduation.
We had announced online that we were having twins, but we didn't say it was twin girls, 'cause people were like, what's the gender?
Oh, we didn't, yeah, we didn't announce the gender. A lot of people thought it was a boy and a girl.
Yeah, but we announced it, what, a month before they came? So I said, wouldn't it be cool if we announced it in front of the Summit of Greatness community? Because I proposed to her at Summit of Greatness 3 years ago.
Yeah.
Then now they're gonna get to see us like do the gender reveal. There's gonna be smoke and lights and whatever you see is gonna be the first one. So I'll say everybody ready? And I'll go 1, 2, 3.
Can you imagine we show them this video and they're like—
6 years, you'll be watching this in 8 years, in 10 years.
Yes.
I hope you remember how much we love you, how much we appreciate you.
We love you so much.
You think they're gonna look like me or you?
I think they're gonna look like both of us.
Hopefully more like you.
How was the ultrasound? It was really good. Babies are growing very healthy and they're a really good size for being twins. I feel very good. I feel very excited. I feel ready, actually. Almost in 2 weeks they'll be here.
How do you feel? You're week 34. Big? Very big. Great job. Let me see.
You can see it, look. We have a very loving, peaceful home ready for you. We're gonna play a lot of games.
You can lay with me while I watch football and relax.
You can watch a lot of football, I can tell. This is a beautiful world and it is challenging at times, but we serve and help and do what we can.
Yes.
To uplift people, make them feel better. Adiós. Okay, niñitas. Bye. Adiós.
We are one week away. We're excited to be a dad. We can't wait to hold you and kiss you and love you.
Wow, they're moving. Support you. We have a beautiful family together. Good babies.
It'll be a lot of fun.
Mi amor, I'm gigante.
It's okay. We're excited to meet you very soon.
Very soon.
We'll see you soon.
See you soon. I think this is a very special moment for all moms or moms-to-be, just feeling like, I'm gonna get to meet you. That makes me emotional.
Yeah.
But it's like, wow, these babies are, you know, growing.
And you were talking to them every day.
We were talking to them every day.
So excited to meet you because you have an amazing mother who's beautiful and kind and loving and caring and thoughtful and emotionally intelligent. We've been waiting for this moment for 10 months or whatever.
Yeah.
And now it's here. And now there's no turning back. Once you get in there, it's chaos. Whatever needs to happen to make sure she's good and the babies are good is what matters.
When we're both there and I'm laying down, I think like I'm just going to be— I want to hold your hand a lot. Like strong and—
You got all the good people here.
And look at you and— Yeah. I don't know how to explain it, but sometimes I think, oh, this is probably what people see when they die. You know, like when they say, oh, all of the visions of all your entire life pass through you. There was a moment for me that so quickly passed by, like the moment we met, how we started dating. How like the deep conversations, like me coming to your podcast, like us like building our life together and getting married, having our home, ta ta ta ta ta ta ta ta. And then right there, we're having 2 babies at once. Not 1, 2. Crazy.
What's one message you want to tell the twins before they're born?
Oh, that We love you so much, your dad and I. We haven't seen you yet, but we love you so much. It's been such a blessing to have you inside my belly. And they're right here right now. This is one's head, and the other head is right here. And she's like this.
Like hearing my first daughter cry, it was like, I was like, she's alive. That was a beautiful moment. Are you okay?
Oh, they're crying very loud.
It's good.
Their heart is pounding. They're perfectly okay in your womb, but when they come out, are they going to be okay?
They're exposed to the world. She's crying, it's good. You can hear her. It's good, she's healthy. She's doing very good. Hello.
You're gonna get your second baby. Okay. And so when the first baby came out, She came out crying really strong.
It's good.
But we were saying, I love you so much. I love you so much. I love you so much. And they were like, okay, everything is good. And now we're going to get Baby B.
And then the second baby came and she wasn't crying.
Baby out.
Baby's out.
It's good. Okay, Baby B is out. And then they started going, come on, baby.
Breathe, baby. Breathe. They were saying, breathe, baby.
Breathe. Come on, baby. Come on, let's try, baby. Let's try.
Come on, baby.
Okay.
She'll be okay. Oh my God. And I'm just like, holy—
Oh my God.
I'm like, you don't have any control in that moment. There's nothing you can do. You're just like hoping that all these doctors are doing what they can to make sure your baby breathes.
And the only thing that I can say is a phrase that my mom said to you. When you get married, God is holding your hand. When you have kids, God is holding your hand.
Mm. There she goes.
That's good.
That's good. Let's go.
It was a moment that I felt the absolute certainty and confidence that everything was going to be okay. I was holding your hands. We had our other baby, and I just felt like, she's going to be fine.
The first baby came over. They put her on your chest.
Yes.
You get to connect to her. You get to, like, see her cheek to cheek, and then she's on your chest. The second baby was still not breathing that well.
No. And so when they put her on me, she was just like this.
Her lungs were not really pumping that well, so she had to go to the NICU. And so one baby was away from you for 24 hours. Yeah, I was with her most of the time upstairs in a different hall trying to make sure that she was good. The whole experience was a wild experience. It was a beautiful experience, you know, stressful. And there was no sleep for days also. So it was just like an intense experience.
Doesn't it make us value our mom's love. Oh my gosh, what moms go through.
Crazy.
Yeah, think about it. All of, all of the things that mothers go through. And then from that moment when you become a parent, you're never not a parent. Yeah, you're always a parent, you know.
Yeah. Anyway, so that was the experience.
I've never seen Lewis driving as Slow, because you were carrying the most precious cargo.
Yeah, the greatest gift. But we got home. I think it was just like making sure they got up in their cribs was like the whole focus. I was like, we just need to get them home safe and then it's going to be okay. Bringing them here safe and happy was great. But over the next month, there was just a lot of complications with what you were going through.
Yeah. It's very emotional for me to talk about it. There's a condition called preeclampsia. It makes your blood pressure skyrocket. It.
Yeah.
And that's what happened.
It was midnight and you were like, my blood pressure is over like 200-something.
Yeah.
And it's not going down and I feel like my heart is palpitating. So we took her to the emergency room and it was a stressful night. I mean, the whole night we couldn't get her blood pressure down. What are the doctors going to do? We just didn't know what was going on and how to really fix it. We were in the ER for, I don't know, 8 or 9 hours until we finally got you stable. But even then you were in and out of the hospital for the next few weeks.
Yeah. And then every time I was in the hospital, I couldn't see my babies. It's a primal instinct that you want to be with your family and your babies.
But I think at the center of it, you lean deeper into your connection to God.
Literally, the hospital is called Saint Joseph, which is the patron and protector of the family. When one links back together The feeling of like, okay, we're coming out of St. Joseph's.
We're leaving the hospital for the last time.
Thank you, God.
Thank you, Virgin Mary.
Providence.
Virgin Mary.
The moon. All the nurses here were incredible. The doctors.
Yeah.
And here's the Virgin Mary. And then, oh my God, when I had the babies inside, we went to Lourdes. We had this experience as well. It's like, everything's going to be fine.
I know everything's going to be All these signs and synchronicities kind of speaking to us. It was an intense few months after the babies came, but ever since then, it's been kind of like this beautiful adventure. Now they'll be 8 months here in a couple of weeks. They're getting so big.
And one looks like me and one looks like you.
One is a white girl, one's a Mexican girl. They're both beautiful, beautiful girls. So it's been a beautiful journey. We eventually started going out of the house more. Where are we?
At the zoo with the baby. When we got them baptized, it was in the same church where we got married.
Which was beautiful. It's like kind of probably the 3 moments I felt God the most. When we got married in the church, it was a spiritual experience in the center by the altar focused on the vision for our relationship, the vision for our life. And what we were creating together. And then being there not even a year and a half later to baptize our kids was also like a spiritual experience, creating the vision for their life.
Yes.
What we want for them as well.
It's something I wanted since they were born. And I feel now our babies are protected. I think also it's the biggest sign of love to give your children the chance of heaven. That to me was like literally, thank you, God, that you're able to give us that. And that we have our family and our babies and all the people that came to the baptism and to experience that together as a family.
And then I think maybe like the next week you finally felt like, ah, I can breathe. Yeah, yeah. Now I feel like we have a much better system and the process and feel more grounded in the whole journey.
Just seeing them be in their culture Everything that they're curious about and smiling and liking new food and all of that, like seeing every single little step.
And they grow so fast.
So fast.
Every day they're changing. I'm like, "Aha, yes." My favorite part is like them waking up and seeing me and they like start smiling right away.
They immediately smile when they see us.
And then picking them up and hugging them and they start kicking their legs. And then I get excited when we play music music and they start dancing and they're really engaged and dancing. It's the greatest gift in the world, and I'm glad that you gave them to me.
I love you. I'm glad you gave them to me too.
You did all the work.
I've never felt more fulfilled.
Yes.
And I've done more than 40 movies. I produce. I travel the world in different places. I've had businesses and did— nothing is more fulfilling than having our babies, being your wife and having our family. And that doesn't mean I don't get to do the other stuff, if I, you know, but just to me, the level of fulfillment cannot even compare.
Yeah. So we're one week away. What do you imagine our life will be like in one week after the twins arrive?
Uh, amazing. It's already amazing. It's just gonna get even more amazing. Amazing. Gonna feel like, wow, we get to live this adventure. It's the biggest adventures of our lives. And just knowing that they're good and they're safe and that we created them with God and that we are here to guide them and protect them. And to know our family is you, and our babies, you know? And I love you so much.
I love you, Lucy. You're amazing. Yeah, I'm gonna chase you. I love you.
I love you. All right, here we go.
What's your definition of greatness?
My definition of greatness is Being in the moment, being love, being in service, and just enjoying the ride.
