What Makes A Good Movie? | Ed Catmull

What would you say then are the main elements of a successful animation film? There is something basic about a structure of a film, but it's not a law. It's like your guiding point. And if you're going to violate it sometimes you should, then you should know why you're doing it. So in the basic two hour film, the fundamental rule is in the first day, 15, 20 minutes, you're establishing the rules of the movie. And you're also making it so that people like or care about the characters. And by the end of that first act, you need to know what the problem is. So that's kind of like the general guideline.
