Lewis Howes argues that anxiety comes from trying to bear the weight of the universe alone. He cites David Foster Wallace on how humans are wired for worship—of money, beauty, or their own feelings—but none of it satisfies. The answer is believing in something larger than yourself and letting go of control.

The self was never intended to hold up the universe, ever. And so to create a non anxious life, you have to choose belief in something bigger than yourself. If you don't, David Foster Wallace is so eloquent. We are wired for worship. That's who we are. That's over centuries. We are creatures who worship. You will worship beauty and you'll never be beautiful enough, as he says. You will worship money and you'll never have enough. You will worship shiny things and they'll never be shiny enough. And ultimately you end up worshiping how you feel. And then you expect the world to bend to how you feel. And that's our world, right? So I have to step back and say, I'm not in charge of the cosmos. Please reign. And there's something about letting go. Belief isn't about holding things super tight. It's about opening your hands up and letting go.
