#29: What I wish my $10k biz coach would have told me
14 Jul 2021 · 27 min
Lindsey Badillo spent $10k on a business coach and learned what she wishes she'd been told first: coaches shouldn't promise specific results, create dependency, or sell secret formulas. She argues the industry needs honest onboarding and realistic expectations about struggle.

This is going to be difficult, but I know that you can do it because whenever you believe in yourself, you can do anything, right? And empowering them and setting them up for reality and letting them know that struggle is normal.
Hey gang, welcome back to the Aligned Coach Podcast. This is your host, Lindsay Baddio. I'm so honored that you are here. I have been running this podcast for over 7 months now since January of this year, we started getting the episodes together and then we published it in like February or March. And I'm just, I just really want to say how excited I am that the podcast has taken off as well as it has and that you all are getting the value from it and that you're, that you're really enjoying it. Now I do ask if you are a returning listener that you would send me a message over on IG and let me know what you've really taken away from this podcast because It, it, I really, really want this podcast to be the place, to be the hub, to be that little, you know, that, that comfort in your ear in the mornings on the treadmill or like in the car ride or whatever, whenever you need it. I want you to know that you can come here and get what it is that you're craving and get what it is that you're looking for, get what it is that you need each day as you grow your business and as you start your business. So I would love for you to come and chat with me over on Instagram @lindsey.badio. Let me know what your biggest takeaways have been from the podcast, what you enjoy most and what you want to see more of. I really, really enjoy our interviews. And I am totally great with continuing those interviews. However, I do think that there will be a shift in the type of people that I bring on just because I want this to be like top frickin notch. And I want you to fully just love and embrace and just totally get what you need from these interviews. So I want them to be like the bomb.com with who it is that's coming on and the value that they deliver. And like, we've had great guests, but I just want to keep it that way. So So let me know if you really like the interviews. Let me know if you really like the short trainings. That's actually what our podcast interview today is going to be. It's going to be our podcast interview, the podcast episode today. It's actually going to be a live that I did over on Instagram. It was about the, it's about a $10,000. The topic of, the topic of it is what I wish my $10,000 business coach would have taught me, right? What I wish she would have told me. And this is so near and dear to my heart. Heart, because I think that there is a huge shift happening right now in the online space. And there's this huge shift happening in the way that we approach business and in the way that we approach our own business building journeys, and the way that we look at our Coaches and the way that we look at these role models that really, that we really endear, and that we look up to. So today's episode is going to be an Instagram and IGTV that took from there, where we're going into what to, how to set your clients up with the best foot forward from the beginning, right? How to set them up for success from the very beginning so that they're not, so that you're not fostering a coach-client codependency, right? So that they're not looking at you as a solve-all for all of their problems, right? So that you're creating and fostering really great relationships with your clients so that they're set up with tools that take them on forever and ever into their life, their relationships, their businesses, their health journeys, whatever the case may be.
So that's what we're going to get into on today's episode.
It's a very short episode, very quick and to the point. It's super duper good. I think that you're really going to like it. I want this to meet you wherever you are today. I want this to really, really, really— I want you to receive this however it is that you're meant to. Please reply to me over on Instagram. Let me know what your best takeaway was. That way I can make this show better and better and better. And leave me a review on the show. Like, leave us some stars. Stars here. Leave us a review on the show. That way it can reach more coaches and more women that are in the process of building their business because that's what this is about, right? It's about empowering each other, supporting each other to be the coach and be the business owner, be the leader that we're all meant to be. So yeah, I'm going to let you all hop over to the episode. If you've not already registered for the 9 to 5 Escape Plan workshop that is happening on Tuesday, July 20th, girlfriend, like you need to get in there. This workshop is going to be the best workshop that we've ever hosted. I host some really good workshops and trainings too, by the way, might I add. But this workshop is going to lay out the exact plan of how you can replace your full-time income and leave your 9-to-5 job specifically in the next, you know, 90 to 120 days, right? So getting out of your job by the end of the year has been the goal, then I highly recommend that you come to this workshop. I'm gonna break it down in the most simplest terms in the most simplest way, you're almost gonna say like, what, Lindsey? Like, this is too easy? Because it does, it gets to, your plan gets to be simple. The simpler, the better. That's what I tell my clients. The simpler you can make it, the better, right? The easier that you can grasp it, the better. We don't need to overcomplicate this. And that's exactly what we're doing in the workshop. You're gonna actually walk away with an escape plan on how to replace that income without overcomplicating it, without funnels, without ads, without having a huge following. Without, without all of those things, right? So that you can do this while you're still working your full-time job, or you can do this while you have the kids at home during the summer. Okay, so that's what we're going to be covering in the workshop. Highly recommend you to come. The requisites to attending are that you must already know who your ideal client is, and you must have a general idea of your niche. This is for service-based coaches, right? Not, not multi-level marketers, not network marketers. I do have a client that works with network marketers, so let me know if you need a coach for that. But This is specifically for service-based coaches who are relationship coaches, health coaches, fitness coaches, business coaches, sales coaches, all those things, and you're trying to get your coaching business off the ground and replace your income, then you need to be at this workshop because it's going to be so juicy. So without further ado, I'm going to let you go ahead and zoom on over to the episode for today. Let me know your reviews. Let me know your best takeaways. And let me know what you want more of out of this podcast because I love, love, love, love this podcast. And I I love serving you all in the best way possible. So I will see you soon and enjoy.
Oh, let me turn this down. Can y'all hear that? Please tell me if you know this song. If you can hear it, please tell me. I'm gonna turn it up so y'all can hear it. Can y'all hear this? Ah, okay, I'm gonna turn it down. It's a very explicit song.
Okay.
Hello, Leah. Hello, hello, hello. Hi, Ira. Hello. Hello, y'all. What's up, Medi Spa?
Oh, y'all.
Okay, so we just wrapped up a live video in the Aligns Coach Collective, which is the sales membership, and we were talking about high-ticket sales in the DMs in Messenger. Versus— hello— versus on— what am I even talking about right now? Okay, we're talking about DM sales and sales calls, right? And that has nothing to do with what we're gonna be talking about in this. This like literally has been something that's like been on my brain, or it's been on my heart and my stomach and my gut for like a week or two now. And I'm just like, okay, like I just need to share this. Like I just need to talk about this. So like, let me know, y'all. Ooh, how do I even want to like start this conversation? Because I'm okay. First of all, let me just start it out by saying I am so thankful for every single investment I have ever made. And I learned so much, so much from this business coach who I'm referring to. And if she watched this today, she would know that I am so thankful for everything that I learned with her all of my growth during our work together, but I think that there's room for improvement in the way that we onboard clients and in the expectations, especially as business coaches, my fellow business coaches who are watching, especially whenever you're bringing people into your world who are expecting an ROI, right? They're expecting a return on their investment. Especially if it's monetary, or they're expecting things that are like tangible in return, whether it's weight loss or it's to be fit or it's even like spiritual stuff, right? Hello. So no, you cannot be in my live video, but thank you for waving at me and for saying hi, but there will be no guests in this live video. Goodbye. Okay, so we, so here's the thing. I invested in this coach, $10,000, y'all. $10,000 US dollars. It was more than I had ever invested into a coach, and I knew that I was on the edge of something so great in my business. This is like last July.
It was like, oh, it was a year ago.
It was like literally a year ago. Um, oh, maybe that was an accident for you to press that. Sorry.
Um, But we—
okay, so this was last July, and I knew that I was on the edge of like a very huge pivotal moment in my business because I had just transitioned from relationship coaching to business coaching. I knew that I already knew a lot about my business, but I was looking to take it up a notch, right? I was looking to learn from someone who, you know, was doing multi-six figures in their business, who could really teach me the ropes. And I went into this investment thinking, teach me what you know so that I can do it too, right? I went into this investment thinking, you're gonna teach me the right strategy. You're gonna teach me the golden secrets that like I don't know yet, right? Hello, hi Maddie. You're gonna teach me the things that I don't know yet.
Secrets.
Like, what are these secrets that I don't know?
And that's how I went into it.
And that was very much the, the attitude and the mindset that was even encouraged, right? It was even encouraged, I would say, whenever I was being onboarded and whenever I was going through the sales call process and whenever I was having these conversations, right? It was very much like, come and learn these secrets that I've yet to tell anyone, that no one else knows. Right? So I am just like, wow, I've never invested this much money into a business coach or any type of coach for that. It was basically like a small car. It was more than like my, you know, one of my cars cost me. And I was like, okay, I'm gonna go into this investment.
I'm just—
she's gonna teach this to me. I'm gonna go apply it and then I'm gonna get said result that she said I was gonna get, right? Like the big The big thing then was $15K months. Like, that was like the big marketing strategy was like $15,000 months. And so I remember, I like specifically remember on this sales call, and I'm not bashing anyone, y'all, like please hear me out. I'm not talking down on anyone. I'm just saying that we can do better. I'm saying that if you are a coach in this space, if you are a leader in this space, we can do so much better. In how we are enrolling clients and in how we are empowering them in their decision-making process. Okay. All of this is coming from this conversation that we just had about like DM sales in the, in the collective. But anyways, so I remember on our sales call, I was like, so can you guarantee me $15,000 months? Like, not Eve. Like, what? Lindsay? Like me thinking, like thinking back to that, to me asking that question a year ago and like, can you guarantee guarantee me that. Me now, I'm like, hell no, I can't guarantee you anything, girlfriend, because you got to do the work. Like, I'm not guaranteeing you nothing. Like, like, knowing that now, I just can't even imagine myself like asking that a year ago. But I did because I was just— I thought there was like a secret that I didn't know. I was like, I've been coaching in relationships and I've been, you know, doing this and it works. Like, it's really good. But like, there's got to be something that like I don't know yet. Please tell me if y'all felt this way. Like if you have felt like everybody knows a secret except for you and like you're like, what's the secret? Like tell me the secret. Because I felt like, I felt like that. Like I felt like, oh, like you're going to teach me the secret and then I'll be able to get said result. Right. And, and that approach was, it was encouraged. It was accepted. I don't really remember the response. I don't really remember what it was to be honest, but I definitely know that it was not, hell no, I can't promise you that. I know that that was not the response.
Y'all.
And it should have been pretty close to that, just to be honest. As a coach, as a leader, you cannot guarantee these things. Maybe if you're a multi-seven-figure coach or you're a multi-seven-figure course creator and you've had thousands of people go through your course and you know that typically, you know, people get X whatever result, then you can guarantee it. But I guarantee you, anybody watching this, if you're on my— if you're a follower, if you're in my community, we don't guarantee it. I don't guarantee it. And I encourage for you not to guarantee things because I think that it puts way too much pressure on yourself. So anyways, that's not what this is about. So what she didn't prepare me for y'all, and, and what I want you to take from this is that whenever you are enrolling people into your programs, right, you're enrolling them into your coaching spots, or you are inviting them into private coaching, whatever the case may be, I want you to be very clear in the fact that I know that I can get you results, right? Like, you know that you can get your clients results. You're not going to guarantee it. I know that I'm capable. I know that I have what it takes to help you transform your life, relationship, spirituality, business, etc., right? I know that I can teach you these tools, but key, but you have to be willing to do the work.
Right?
This is not a magical strategy that's going to fix all your problems. I'm going to hold your hand step by step, especially this is private coaching. I'm going to hold your hand step by step. And what I can guarantee you is I'm going to teach you tools that you can apply for the rest of your journey, that you can apply for the rest of your life, that you can take beyond our coaching container, and you can continue to apply these tools. I can guarantee you that. I can guarantee you that you're going to have a constant in your corner I can guarantee you that I'm gonna empower you to be the best that you can be. So, do you see the difference in me guaranteeing you a result and me promising you that you're gonna like have magical fairies and unicorns versus I guarantee you that whenever you leave this container, you're gonna walk away with more than what you came here with. I can guarantee you that I'm gonna be your right-hand girl. So, there's such a difference in that because I think that we are cultivating codependency in our coaching relationships, in our coaching relationships, whenever we set our clients up to think that there is some type of like secret that they don't know. Like, I think that we're creating over-dependency on our clients. Like, we're dependent on them to give us validation, and then they're dependent on us for that, for us to give them the answers, right? If they, if like, if we're cultivating this, oh, there's like secret. It's like the secret mentality or the secret strategy, like you don't know yet, right? So, so what I want to empower you from this conversation is to lead sales conversations, whether you're having them in the DMs, whether you're having them on sales call, lead them in a way where you're so damn sure of yourself that whether or not you get a yes or a no in a sales conversation, that like you still know that you're valid as a coach, right? Like, you're still valid as a human being. And whether or not you get a yes or no in a sales conversation, like, it doesn't mean shit about your ability. It doesn't mean shit about your potential. It doesn't mean shit about, like, what your destiny—
like, none of that—
the trajectory of your business, okay? Because everyone is in a different space. And whenever we know that going into these sales conversations, we can be that much more grounded in our truth. Like, we can be that much more grounded in telling someone, no, baby, like, you got to be responsible for your results. I'm here for you. Like, let's do this together, but you've got to be ready for it. Like, you got to believe in yourself more than I believe in you, right? Like, you have to believe and you got to be ready to do this work and you got to do the work in between our coaching calls, right? You're gonna be so grounded whenever you know that you're valid no matter what, no matter the result of the sales conversation. You're gonna be that much more grounded in your truth to say that, right? And to speak from that place rather than to sit in the shadows and say, yeah, I can guarantee that. Yeah, everything's gonna be fine. Yep, it's sunshine and rainbows. Yep. Mm-hmm. Yep, it's fine. Just sign it, sign the contract. Like, oh my God, no. That's what's gonna lead to you tying your self-worth to the number in your bank account, right? That's what's gonna lead you to being in a rut anytime you're not signing new clients, right? That's what's going to lead you to creating codependency in your coach-client relationships, right? So all of this to say, tell your clients the truth from the get-go. Tell them the truth. Set them up for reality, y'all, because if we're sugarcoating the truth and if we are sugarcoating telling people that, like, nah, boo, you got to do the work, work. Like, no, this is not a one-and-done magical rainbow thing. Like, you got to be willing to do the work. If we're not telling them that, if we're not telling them the truth, we're really setting them up for failure. Like, straight up. Like, I'm not an expert in teaching people. I do know someone that can teach you how to teach people. Okay, I take that back. I am, and I do know how to teach people. I'm a born teacher. But like, as in teaching clients and fostering coach-client relationships, like, there's whole certification programs on that. So What I do know though is that you don't want to be leading your clients astray, right? You do not want to set them up for failure from the beginning. Okay, that's what I do know for a fact, right? I do know that from my experience in the past 2 years coaching and even as an elementary school teacher. If we started a lesson, like I'm just thinking like first grade math, teaching students to do double-digit addition and subtraction telling them from the beginning, this is going to be difficult, but I know that you can do it because whenever you believe in yourself, you can do anything, right? And empowering them and not saying like, I'm going to teach you this lesson today and everything's going to be fine, right? Setting them up for reality and letting them know that struggle is normal, right? Letting them know that like, it's okay to struggle and we're going to do this together. I'm currently reading the book Limitless Mind. If you haven't read it, highly recommend. I'm like halfway through it right now. And the whole theme of the book is that struggle is good. Struggle, you learn, I don't know the numbers, but like you learn so much more whenever you struggle and whenever you have to figure things out and whenever your mind's having to wrap around new concepts and it doesn't get it right from the beginning, that shows that you're learning it and you're integrating it and you're making it a part of your, of your wisdom and of your knowledge. Set that expectation up with your clients, because if you don't, your clients will be— you'll be dragging them along behind you, and they're going to feel like they're behind. They're going to feel like they're not doing the right thing. They're going to feel like everyone else has it figured out except for them. They're going to feel like, well, what am I doing wrong? What am I doing wrong? I'm not getting— like me, like I was like, I'm not getting the $15K months. What am I doing wrong? And I remember getting on these calls with my coach and I was just crying and crying and crying. That's another story and how to support your clients in those moments. But I just remember feeling like I was so freaking behind and that like everybody else had it figured out except for me. And I was like, why? Because I did not know that struggle was normal. And I don't know why that left me because like as a teacher, I literally spent like 4 years learning this. I'm like, why didn't I know that going into coaching or into my own business? So I'm telling you now, if no one else has told you, struggle is normal. It's okay to not have it all figured out. It's okay to need to wrap your head around things. It's okay to, to not get it all figured out in the beginning. It's okay to hear no because not everybody's a perfect fit for you. It's okay to change your business model. It's okay to try out new things. Like, it's okay, and I encourage it. And Please set the same expectation up with your clients. Let me know how that feels to you. Like, let me know if you needed to hear that because I feel like we needed to hear it. I feel like it's almost, it's something that we're just glazing over in the coaching industry and we get to be different, right? Like we're a new generation of coaches coming through. I am not the same coach. I don't run my business the same way that the girls from 2000, 2018 did. Like, I don't, and you don't either, right? So we get to do it differently. So that, that's my spiel for today. I want you to know that it's okay to struggle. It's okay to not have it all figured out. Set your clients up, let them know that, right? Don't let them feel like they're behind because they're not getting the results like everyone else, right? And if you're still trying to figure out, well, like, Lindsay, like, I've been struggling and like, okay, like, I do, I am missing some of the strategic pieces, right? And there's some mindset stuff that still has to happen, right? I invite you right now. I invite you all to come to the workshop that's happening next week. Y'all, I'm hosting a workshop on creating your 9 to 5 escape plan, and I'm going to go ahead and tell you right now, it's not going to be a golden strategy. It's going to surprise you. It's not a golden strategy. It's simple. It's a simple, clear, clear-cut plan. But it's so freaking powerful, and it's not gonna be an easy journey. I can go ahead and tell you that now. It's not gonna be an easy journey, but it's gonna be so damn worth it to see your progress whenever you put in the work, right? Whenever you have a plan, whenever you know what it is that you're working towards, whenever you feel confident in that plan, right? I can't tell you how many like $27 freebies or $27 tiny products I had that like were gonna teach you something and, but I wasn't confident in it. I wasn't confident in it. Therefore, I didn't implement it. Right? So what I'm going to be teaching in this workshop is a structure that will support you, a structure that will give you tools and a clear-cut plan, right, to replace your income. Right? I can't promise you that. I'm not going to promise you that you will, but I can promise you that I will show you what's worked for me, what's worked for my clients, what's given them these tools to make it possible. I'm going to be teaching you that in the workshop next Tuesday. It is a free workshop, y'all. And I don't know, like, I'm literally handing you a ticket right now to join us. Okay. My workshops are really, really freaking good. They're really good. And I'm not just like tooting my own horn, but like, toot toot, they're really freaking good. And I'm actually learning that like Part of my personality is to bring community together and to share my wisdom and to be really freaking confident in that. So I'm, I'm pulling this workshop together with all the things that I've learned over the last 2 years as a coach. Like this, like this, what my $10,000 business coach didn't tell me. I'm like, I really wish she would have, right? I'm taking all these lessons, I'm putting them into this workshop and I'm handing it to you and I'm saying, here, here, here's your plan. It's going to be hard. Business is hard, right? If you don't want— sorry, my parents were calling me. If you don't want hard, then like go back to your other job, right? I would give it up now, just to be honest. If you don't want to work hard, I would not be trying to start a business, just to be clear and like very honest, right? Like I would not be trying to be a business owner if you don't want hard, because it is hard. Okay, but I can tell you it doesn't have to be like Like you don't have to struggle alone. You don't have to struggle alone. Okay. So I am inviting you to come to the workshop next Tuesday, the 9 to 5 Escape Plan Workshop. If you have not already registered, go to my bio, anticlimactically, go to my bio, register there, send me a DM. Let me know what you're most looking forward to y'all. Like let me know, please message me. Like I reply back to you. Like, I talk to y'all in the DMs, right? Like, I talk to you all. Let me know what you're most looking forward to. Like, I'm gonna have a Q&A session at the end of this workshop so that I can answer some of these questions. Excuse me. Now, due to time, I've been known to like run way over in these workshops, so I'm gonna keep it— based on the feedback y'all gave me yesterday, I'm gonna keep it like— we're gonna keep going. Like, our pace is gonna be quick because I want to be respectful of your time. So we're going to be running this workshop on schedule. It's going to be between 45 and 60 minutes.
So we're going to get in and we're going to get it done.
Now, whatever questions you have before the workshop starts, go ahead and send me a DM on them. Go ahead and send it to me so I can be ready. I can address it on the workshop if I don't address it in the DMs, like no big deal. And let's like, I want you to come into this workshop ready to learn, ready to integrate, great and really ready, ready to do this differently for the rest of 2021, like ready to do it differently. Okay, so here we go. Y'all go register for the workshop if you haven't. And let's set ourselves and our clients up for success. Okay, let's do that. Like, let's do it differently. Let's be a different breed of leader. Let's be a different, a different type of coach, right?
Like, let's be the coach that we wish that we would have had.
Okay. Let's do that. I'm supporting you all. I'm cheering you on. Yay, Leah! You're so welcome. I'm cheering you on. And yeah, be, be, be great.
I don't know. Go be great.
Love you all.
Goodbye.
