Michelle Vroom built a Facebook group to 6,300 members and six figures by going all-in on one platform, treating it like a curated party, and running destination events as the group's centerpiece. She focuses on quality members over numbers and teaches coaches to hit $10K months with a repeatable group-based strategy.

I had Snapchat, I had LinkedIn, I had Twitter, I had Instagram, like I had all the things. For me, I can honestly 100% say that growing to multiple six figures in my business happened as a result of me going all in on one thing at a time.

So cheesy. All right, welcome on, Michelle Vroom. I'm so excited to have you here.
Thank you for having me, Lindsay.
Yeah, yeah, I'm so excited. So we were just chatting about, you know, kind of like the industry, the coaching world, and how it feels like we start these new things or like we start, you know, kind of coining our terms or like we have these things that we think are secret sauce and then things catch, catch fire or they, you know, people, it kind of goes viral, right? Or like we get these hot words and hot terms and we're like, wait a minute, that's my magic sauce. Like, that's my thing. What, what do you feel like is your magic sauce, Michelle? What do you really like to just instill in your people? Like, what do you really stand behind?
Yeah, I stand behind freedom. And for me, that comes with having an audience of your own that allows you to get clients whenever you want. For me, that's been my Facebook group. Typically, that's what we support our clients with, is creating their own groups. And if they have a group, making money from it. And I really truly believe that freedom and security in business is found in your ability to get a client whenever you want. There's so much that shifts when you're able to do that. I think your perspective and how you show up in your marketing also shifts, and that changes the game for everything. And so I want more, more women, and I work with a lot of moms, right? So I want more women and moms to be able to have that freedom, have that security in knowing that they've got a place where they're building relationships with potential clients.. And I think being able to do that in your own community just makes sense. That's the way that the world's been going. And I don't see that changing anytime soon.
I love it. Why a Facebook group? Tell me, like, was it always a Facebook group for you? Or is that just kind of like where you found your home? Yeah, like, tell us, tell us kind of how that— how did that—
Yeah, yeah. So for me, like, I was always marketing on Facebook. So it made sense to kind of, you know, create my own community there. I call it like my hub, right? Your virtual party, if you will. And what happened is I need— I was creating a free challenge that I ran in April of 2018. And I needed a place to house the videos. And so I created a Facebook group and I was going to shut the group down after the challenge. Like I had no long-term strategy for what this thing could look like. And then I remember after I ended the challenge being like, well, I have 100 people in this group. And my coach was like, do you have to shut it? Like, what if you just showed up in your group? Because she knew that I liked to build relationships and I like to talk and I like to engage and it just made sense. And I was like, yeah, what if I just left it open? And so I did. And that's how the Market Like a Boss group was born. It wasn't called that at the beginning, but now it's called that. So I've had it for 3 and a half years. It's the place that brings me the majority of my clients. We've got 6,300, close to 6,300 women in there right now. And like I have met so many incredible people, like clients and otherwise. Inside of that group. And so for me, like I truly believe that if you are marketing on Facebook in any form, you need a group because that's what Facebook is moving toward. Like Facebook has been moving toward groups for a long time. And that's only going to continue to grow. They want to keep people in community. They want to keep people on their platform longer. Content in groups is, is higher placed in the algorithm. So it's seen by more people than like, say, your business page. And so I think just being able to understand how certain platforms work and leverage those platforms, like leverage whatever, you know, that platform's got going on so you can have more reach and make your marketing work smarter, not harder. Like that's what goes into all of this. And so because my Facebook group has been so powerful for me, because I know that it gives you the ability to be able to just nurture an unlimited amount of leads. Like I am all in on that. And that's something that I work with my clients to create as well.
Yeah, yeah, I love this. So I— this is actually like ringing super true for me because I had a Facebook group, I had ran a challenge in there, I had just really used it as like a, like another home for people to come to, like if they were not necessarily ready to like work with me one-on-one, or they weren't ready for like Align to Coach Academy, they'd come into the Facebook group and I would just serve them, right? And then it got to this really weird place where I was like, I was over on Instagram every day. And then I was like, oh, well, now I need to be in my Facebook group. And it was like the Facebook group got pushed to the back burner. And then, and like, I haven't even like, said this out loud yet. But I've been feeling like this really, this urge, like this calling to come back home to it. Like I've been on Facebook more lately. And I am just really craving that community again.
I don't know, a lot of people are.
Yeah. Do you feel like that you're just pulled in a lot of different places? Like, I guess guess whenever you were, you know, getting your business off the ground in 2018, like did you feel that pull or did you just always know that was the place for you?
Yeah. And to be clear, I started my business in 2016. And for like the first 2 years, just relied on referrals and nothing wrong with that. I think a lot of people are in that place. And listen, when you're brand new to business, like yeah, you need to tap your warm network, right? That's how you're going to get clients faster. For me, it became a situation where I didn't want to just rely on referrals. I wanted more control. I wanted to put myself in the driver's seat of my marketing. And so the group was that place for Ed. I was in a lot of different places before I really went all in on my group. Like I did Periscope at one point. Do you remember Periscope?
I don't even know what that is.
Periscope was like this video, like streaming thing. It was such a weird platform. And you had people who, like you'd be doing a video and like you had all these like hackers come in and just like write weird inappropriate comments on your video. It was so weird.
Oh, such a weird—
I had that. I had Snapchat. I had LinkedIn. I had Twitter. I had Instagram. Like I had all the things. For me, I can honestly 100% say that growing to multiple six figures in my business happened as a result of me going all in on one thing at a time. Yeah. It doesn't mean that that's always how, like, I'm going to be, right? Like I added my podcast after the group was becoming a more well-oiled machine. It doesn't mean that I'll never do anything in the future, right? As I grow to seven figures. But I went all in on one platform, one place where I was building that community. And that continues to ring true today. And now I get to teach my clients how to do that. Like I recently revamped my signature program to focus on helping women get to their first $10K month from their Facebook group, using their Facebook group. Like really making marketing so much more simple for women who, who need that. I think we all need more simplicity. I think that's something that I know I felt on my heart and a lot of people have. So I'm sort of just using this as a new season to like lean into what I'm already really good at, which is Facebook groups. Because people always ask like, how do you do this in your Facebook group? Like, how have you created this environment where people want to be? And it's something that I think I used to take for granted and I don't anymore. So once I really got clear on not just who I wanted to target, but what I wanted to offer, like what all of that looked like, then I went all in. And I had people telling me like, you should be on Instagram. You should be doing more Reels. You should be doing this. You should be doing that. And I'm like, to cut some of that noise out because there will always be people telling you what you should and shouldn't do.

So thank you so much for listening to today's episode. Let's jump back in. Hashtag exhausting, right?
Yeah, hashtag exhausting.
So exhausting. Yeah, I feel that. I feel that on so many levels. Like, I think that finding simplicity wherever we can, because like, yes, then as moms, like as wives or partners, or just as human beings, like we have so many things that we're juggling all the time, right? Like, gotta stay healthy, gotta feel good, like gotta show up for your clients, gotta be a good wife, like all those things. So I think that finding simplicity really is the key to it. I remember just feeling like I like the same thing, like I have to be in all the places. Oh, I need to make a TikTok. Oh, now I need to be on LinkedIn, like, you know, and just feeling just super like spread thin, you know. And for me, like I made Instagram the thing, like I had a mentor last year, which I started my business in 2019. So I'm a little bit newer. But I remember having my mentor tell me like, you just need to to say, because I was in this place of like, well, do I go all in on my Facebook group or do I do Instagram? She's like, you just need to pick one and like, excuse my language, y'all, but like make it your bitch. And like, those being her words. And I'm like, yes, I'm just gonna make it my bitch. Like, here I go. I love that. That was really, that was how I found my confidence, like a lot more strongly, like on Instagram. But now I almost Yeah. Like, I don't know. I just feel this call for community again.
So I'm like, how do you change? You get to make the decision. Like, I want to be really clear about this. Like, you can also change. Yeah. Right. Um, I don't see things changing with my group anytime soon, but if they ever did, I wouldn't know. Like when you go all in, like the way that you've done, even with Instagram, like it's going to give you more clarity and direction. And sometimes that clarity and direction leads you to wanting to go down a different path. And there's nothing wrong with that. I think sometimes we, let our pride like keep us like, I've got to stay on this particular, like, it's almost like on the other end, right? On the one end you have people who are, but on the other end, it's like, I can never make a change because that means that I did something wrong. And I really want to challenge like the listeners to look at that. Is that true? Or is that just you, the path that you're taking? And there's absolutely nothing wrong with you. You're on the right track already.
Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. Um, okay. So we know that we can change our mind, right? And we know that we can evolve and that we can grow from it. So how in the world did you grow a Facebook group to 6,300 people? Like, that's the real question. Everyone wants to really know, right?
Everyone wants the juicy details. First things first, I wanted to be there. And I know that that sounds maybe very simple and basic, but truth be told, I don't see this with enough people who have groups. Like, they start the group because they think it's going to generate some quick clients or some quick revenue. And they're only in it for that. They're not in it for the impact and the relationships. I have always been in it for the impact and relationships from day one. And people see that I want to be in the group. They see the excitement that I bring to the table. And that makes them want to be there too. It's contagious.
Yeah.
So I can't teach people how to have that. Like they have to bring that to the table. I think that's the first piece.
Oh, that's good.
That's good stuff.
Like you have to be there and you have to want it and you have to want that community feel, right? And not everyone does. And there's nothing wrong with that, right? There's nothing wrong with that at all. You know, like maybe you don't—
Nothing wrong with it, but— I don't think that like you have to— Exactly. There's nothing wrong with it at all.
Okay. So we know that we have to love where we're at and we know that we have to be like in tune with being there. All right. What else would you say to us if we're like on the cusp of like, okay, like I think I want to go all in on this Facebook group, I'm not really sure if this is my thing, but I'm going to try it.
What else?
Like what other advice would you give for them?
Yeah. So make it a destination, meaning like what happens inside of your group is way more important than the fact that you have a group. I think a lot of people market their group. Like I have a free group, come join. Or they participate on those really silly follow trains that you see, like Follow Friday, join my Facebook group. And like, how do you know if any of those people are even qualified? Right. The reason why my group isn't just a group of warm bodies, it's a group of people who buy from me is because I'm all about quality members. Like 6,300 might sound really great. And it is really great. I shouldn't say it's not. It is absolutely. But I also want to be clear that to some people and compared to other groups, it was slower growth over the last 3 and a half years. Right. But I opted for slower intentional growth because I want the right people to be in there. And that meant marketing what happens inside of my group. Not that I have a group itself. Nobody cares that you have a free group. There are tons of free groups out there. And I don't say that to discourage anyone. It shows that groups are hot, right? Like it shows the value of utilizing groups, but you've got to get more creative in how you market it. Talk about what's happening inside of the group. Talk about the value that your members are bringing to the table, the value that you're bringing to the table. And that's how you attract people who want to be there, right? People who are interested in the topics and content that you have inside of your group. So that would be my second tip. Um, because when you can do that, then your group becomes a destination. It's not just like a pit stop along the way, right? It's not just like people pop in once and then they never come back. My people come back over and over again. It's a very— and again, they, they like the energy in there, right? But they also find value in what's inside of the group. And I market that value over and over again. So we don't just like leave our group out there either. I think that's another thing, like we market our group. As if we were marketing an offer.
I love it. I love that so much. So like you really showcasing, hey, I'm training, I'm doing this training inside of my group, right? Or I'm doing this challenge or I'm going live and we're talking about these, right? So it's not like, hey, join my group, free promo, right?
It's 1000%. And that's the strategy, by the way, that we use with our clients. So like in my signature program where I'm teaching clients how to have a $10K month from their Facebook group, Right now they are creating a destination event. So it could be a challenge. It could be another live event that happens exclusively in your group. And that is the one strategy that is going to get them to a $10K month. That's it. That's all they're doing. Extra fluff and stuff just to get people in their group. Like they're using that destination event to grow their group with the right people, to position themselves as an authority figure, as a leader. And then, you know, utilizing the people that participate as opportunities to sell and to talk about their offer. I mean, when all of those things happen, that's when your group is really working for you. And I think a lot of people struggle with keeping it simple and keeping a simple strategy. And that's why they tend to fall off or let their group, you know, kind of die or, or close down their group altogether. The other piece I'll say is, again, like this, this, this concept of going all in, like not just going all in on my actions, but going all in on my mind and how I view my group. Right? Like number one, long-term marketing strategy. Now, again, it doesn't mean that that won't change in the future. It doesn't mean that I'm not allowing space for change, but because I went all in on that, because I'm fully committed to my group, not just in action, but in mind as well, that's what's kept me going. Right? Like if something doesn't work the way that I expect, and there have been many times that that has happened with my group, I'm not just going to drop off because it's important to me. It's something that I have committed I think a lot of people commit to strategies and then quit way too quickly. They quit before they can really see the power of what works. And so this goes for Facebook groups. This goes for Instagram. This goes for any strategy you utilize. Go all in, right? And don't quit. Like a lot of people quit before like that first 90-day period when you need to see if it's working, right? Like you really can't, you can't do it for a couple of weeks and then make a decision about whether this is a strategy that's going to work. And I believe that any strategy, Facebook groups and included, has the capacity to work for you as long as you're all in on it. Because you're going to figure it out, right? You're going to work it till it works. Like nothing works 100% every single time or on the first try. It's all about am I willing to go through the discomfort? Am I willing to fail, right, on the short— in the short term? Am I willing to try something and not have it work out exactly as expected, but still stay committed to the strategy and to the goal?
Oh, that is gold right there. That is gold. Am I committed to the whole process? Right? Am I committed to the ups and the downs and the in-betweens? Yeah, because you're so connected to the bigger picture, right? Like you're so connected to the why behind it, right? I love what you said about it's not about just getting people there to make some money quick, right? Which we all want that, sure. But it's about, it's about what's behind that, right? What's at the core of that, which is building relationships. It's having less to do, but still making a huge freaking impact and still making a boatload of money, right? And if we think about I feel like $10,000 a month is a lot of money, right? Like, where it's a lot and in the sense of like $10K a month is nothing, right? If you have nothing to stand like behind it, right? So what would that do for your family? What would the simplicity of that do for your time to have with your kids, right? So yeah, all of that, that you have to be connected to what's at the core of it to go all in, you know, because not every challenge, not every event, not every live is gonna go the way that you thought it would..
And that's with any strategy, you know, Facebook group or not. Yeah, exactly.
Yeah. I love this. I love it. So tell us about your podcast. What do you do on your podcast, Market Like a Boss?
Yeah. So on Market Like a Boss, I talk about just like, it's like sassy, tough love about marketing and showing up and getting over yourself and getting over your fears. And when I say getting over your fears, I don't mean getting over them and never having them come up again, but addressing like, what are some of the fears that keep people hidden, that keep people from moving forward? While at the same time giving people really tangible, actionable steps that they can take to market like a boss. Like to me, market like a boss means you are in the driver's seat of your marketing. You are in control of how and when you show up. It's actually the only thing you can control. You can't control what other people think of you. You can't control whether clients, certain clients decide to work with you. Like the thing that you can control is you. And I think that's just so powerful. And it's a message that needs to be heard more, that you can only control you and how you what you do. And if you can focus only on what you can control, you'll be amazed at all of the other things that happen. I think a lot of the challenges in marketing come when we try to control everything else.
Yeah. Yeah.
1000%.
And then, and like, this reminds me of like staying proactive rather than like reactive, right? Like stay, like you say the things that you're in control of. Yeah. Stay in your lane. Um, but, and move forward, right? Rather than responding responding to all the things around you, you know, whether or not a person signs with you, whether or not your launch goes as planned, whether, you know, like all those external things, right? Like, like you said, market like a boss, like you are the boss, like you are the captain, you are, you are the driver of the ship, like you determine where you go next and how you do it. So yeah, I love that. I love the name of that.
It's so catchy.
Thank you. Yeah, yeah. Cool. All right, Michelle. So what advice would you give to— and you've already dropped like So many golden nuggets in this, but what advice would you give to the coach or the business owner? Do you primarily work with coaches, by the way?
Not, not only coaches, but a lot of coaches tend to come to me because they see sort of what I'm doing, especially with my group. But I've worked with other service providers like brand designers, web designers, Facebook ad strategists, copywriters. So, but I do work with a lot of coaches.
Yes.
Beautiful. Beautiful.
So If we had a new, new and growing coach or online service provider and they're like, all right, Michelle, like I'm ready for this. I'm ready to go all in. What is the very first like actionable step that like you would tell them to take in growing their Facebook group to foster that profitable community?
Yeah. The first action step I would tell you to take is understanding the value of what's happening inside of your group. So think about it like a party, right? You're hosting a party online. Who do you want to invite? What do you want to do there? Right? What's happening at the party? Really, that was missing for me with my group. Like, I didn't have clarity about that. I was planning on shutting it down after that challenge, right? So I didn't have like a long-term, you know, strategy or clarity about what I wanted the group to become. I figured it out. So I also want to say like, it doesn't have to be perfect. I think you can totally look at my story and recognize that you don't have to have it all together. You don't have to have some extravagant content plan. But I think if you can really like own the party piece, right. And own the fact that it's your party and understand why it matters, why someone should come to your party and who you want there in the room. I think it's going to make your life a lot easier and it's going to help you monetize your group faster, right. Make money from your group faster because you are getting the right people in from the beginning.
Yeah. Yeah.
100%.
It's your party. I love that. It's your party.
Right. And who do you want? Your party.
Yeah.
It's literally like we treat our group like a party. Like if you were hosting a party at your home, right. And someone showed up to your party, you wouldn't just leave the front door open and hope they figured out where the food and the bathroom and the drinks and everything are. You would greet them. You would send them to other people. Like it's the same exact concept online. And I think people forget about that. Like we forget about the fact that like, no, we're just a bunch of humans talking and building relationships. And so we also treat our group like a priority. Like the minute someone comes in, We welcome them. We want them to be part of our community. We want it to make it such a wonderful experience, value in a way that keeps them coming back. And the reason why we're able to do that is because we do treat it like a party. So I think the party analogy just works really well and hopefully gives people that like breath of fresh air that, hey, I get to make this look however I want, right? My group doesn't have to look like everybody else's group. Like I get to decide what that looks like. You know, there were certain things that I do not did not and do not do in my Facebook group that other groups do, right? Like certain promo threads that I'm like, nope, not going to have that. Nope. Doesn't feel authentic. Like I'm very honest, very transparent, very vulnerable in my group, more so than a lot of other coaches, because that feels good for me. That's part of my brand. And the beautiful thing is that because I show up in a way that aligns with my brand, right? I'm going to use the word align because it makes sense that that's, that's what it is here. Then what happens is I attract like-minded people.
Hello, it's Lindsay. So I want to share a really, really juicy client win from a beautiful student who came through Aligned Coach Academy. So this is our 12-week signature program to learn how to sign high-ticket paying clients for your online coaching business. So before this student came through, she was all over the place, right? She was focusing on her website and funnels and really just kind of skipping from task to task, she didn't really have much clear direction that would bring in clients, right? So whenever she came into Alliance Coach Academy, we put the method that's like literally behind the madness. So now she has more clarity, she has more structure, she actually knows what she's supposed to be doing each day. Like she's never questioning how to bring in leads. All right, let's hop back to today's episode.
Right, like-minded clients. And listen, if you're a coach, like, you want to work with clients who have similar values to you, right? It doesn't mean you're the exact same person, but if you have somebody who loves the fact that you give tough love, right? Or who loves this certain aspect of your style, think what an amazing client that's going to be. Because I also, I don't want you just being in control of how and when you get clients. I also want you being in control of the type of clients that you attract and only working with amazing clients. Yeah. Not to say that client stuff is never going to happen. That's a whole other topic that I know we're not going to cover today, but I just want to be clear that like, this is how you get clients that you, that you love working with is by you being clear first and like kind of calling them in, right? Like saying who you want to come to your party.
Yep. It's almost like a filter that they have to come through, right? It's like screening automatic.
Yeah.
And automatic prescreening, prequalify, right?
Right.
Take the first step to join my group.
Right.
Did you even want to be at this party?
You know?
Right.
Right. And listen, if you, if you, if you have a party that you want a certain type of person to come to your party, What are you going to put on the invitation? Are you going to like dance around it? Are you going to create an invitation with that person in mind? That's marketing, right? That's marketing. And I really think that, um, that's the biggest piece of advice I would give is just get really clear on that first. And it's going to make the rest of your marketing that much easier.
Oh my God, I love this. I love it so much. What kind of party are you hosting and who do you want to be there? And get so, so, so clear on that. And then it's going to come easier.
Yeah, absolutely. Do a journaling assignment on it. And I think you'll be potentially surprised at what comes up and then use those insights, use the things that come out as you're creating your group.
So good, Michelle. Thank you for that.
So good. You're welcome.
So the name of your group, if our listeners in the aligned coach gang want to come and join you, want to come snoop, see what your party's all about. The name of your group is Market Like a Boss, right?
Market Like a Boss. If you type it in Facebook, you will find it.
Market Like a Boss. Okay. Yep. Awesome. And then are you on, are you active on other platforms as well?
A lot of our— I am on Instagram. Market Like a Boss MV. So V as in Vroom, my last name. On there, I repurpose a lot of content on Instagram, but I do have a Friday Fails thread where I talk about whatever my big fail was that week. I don't do it every single week, but we celebrate failure on that thread. So that's kind of a good, yeah. I think people like, like tend to like that because it's like refreshing.
Yeah. Yeah. So I just want to like take a little pause on what you just said. You said that you're, you're repurposing content to your Instagram. So you're taking stuff from your group or from other places and like sharing it over to your Instagram so that it's not feeling overwhelming.
Is that right? That is correct. We repurpose a ton. We have a ton of content that we repurpose. People are like, how do you show up all the time? I said, I don't. I don't.
We repurpose content.
Like I've got 3 crazy boys at home. I'm not, I'm not attached to my phone 24/7.. Um, and I think people react to that cause they're like, oh wait, you have a system for how you do that? And I do. Here's the other thing though. It took me years to build that system. That system did not come overnight. So I want to be clear to those of you who are like, oh, I wish I were better at repurposing, or I wish I were better at doing this. Like it will come with time too.
Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. And I'm sure that you have a small team, right?
I have a team. I have a team of a marketing assistant and a client success manager and they both support me with that. So yes, I also have a team. I was doing repurposing before I had a team, which was helpful because then when the team came on, it was a, it was a system that I could like pass off to them. But listen, like any system, we have to make updates and tweaks to it all the time. The point is, is that my Facebook group is my hub, meaning it's the place where I create unique content and then either share it, like if it performs well, share it in other places. Like if you want, it could exclusive, unique content, you come to my group. Whereas like if you come across my profile on Instagram or my podcast, like some of that is repurposed content to catch people who might not be part of my group, bring them into my world. And if they like my style, if they want to hang out more, if they want to come to my party, then they join my Facebook group. So I also want to be clear about that. Cause I think a lot of people have different hubs, like multiple hubs that they're trying to like, those platforms are competing against each other. Whereas my group is, is the main place where you hang out right before you work with me, the podcast, Instagram, my email list, those things funnel people to my group. They are not like independent platforms. It all works together. It's a very like holistic view of marketing. And so I want to share that sort of kind of overview for people because I think that can be helpful too. I love that.
That is so good. Yeah. Those platforms can definitely compete, right? If you're like, come to my email list, but wait, go find me on TikTok. And but wait, like, Instagram. And like, yeah, like, no wonder you feel like you're in all the places all the time. There is this word— oh, I'm gonna ruffle some feathers— but there is this word omnipresent. And I don't know why it just like, it just like stresses me out just hearing that word omnipresent. I'm like, I do not need or want to be omnipresent. Like, no, absolutely not. You want me to be omnipresent? Like, pay to come and come and work with me, right? Like, and then we'll— I'll be omnipresent on our Zoom calls. Like, I don't know, you know, just that just stresses me out. So I love the fact that you're it's really about the systems and about having a very smart, holistic marketing plan. And it makes sense. You know, it makes sense. You know what the end vision is. And I'm sure that that's what you teach your clients as well, right?
Yep, exactly. Exactly. That's why we keep it simple. That's why I have my clients doing one strategy to get to a $10K month from their group, because it's something that they can repeat. Right? It's repeatable. People also do one strategy once and then they're like, oh, that didn't work. On to the next. Like, no, you're, you're, you're leaving things on the table that did work, right? So if you can repeat strategies and do them over and over again, make tweaks every single time, you'll learn something new. You're putting all of your momentum toward one thing versus dividing up your momentum every single time you chase another shiny object.
Oh, so good. So good, Michelle.
