#72: Alleviating burnout and co-dependency as a high-performing business owner

As a business owner, boundaries get to be your friend, and that no is a complete sentence. It's okay to say no. In fact, you need to say no, because when you say no to somebody else, you say yes to yourself. And the more you get to learn to do that, the better your life is going to be. I promise.

I actually have a friend and dear client of mine, Megan Armstrong. Megan is such a kindred spirit, such a free-spirited, just beautiful, beautiful person. And I'm so excited to have her in today. No worries. Awesome. Well, Megan, tell us a little bit about who you are. Now, I know, I know, because we've spent so much time together, but tell our audience a little bit about you, a little bit about the work that you do, who it is that you serve. What is, what is your passion? What— tell us about you.

Yeah, you know, my passion is really coaching. I love coaching. I started coaching when I was in high school. I started with springboard diving. When I was in graduate school, I coached education, and I coached education for, God, probably 20 years. So I love bringing out the best in people. I love being able to meet somebody where they're at and take them where they want to go. There's just something so beautiful in, in finding solutions that don't fit the box or the mold or Yeah, yeah, you know, I agree with that.

It's like a, it's like a problem that you have to solve, but even then it's like there's never like a cut-and-dry solution to it, you know. There's always more to unpack, which is, you know, kind of before we hit record talking about just healing and like what that means, especially as business owners, it's like there's always more work to do. I think you're done with the work, like there's more and more and more. So tell us a little bit about what you do as far as— we know, or I know that you are the Healing Hippie, so tell us a little bit about what that means how that came to fruition and, um, yeah, what does that really encompass?

So The Healing Hippie, um, excuse me, I, I, you know, it's interesting through my healing journey, I have stepped into who I truly am and I continue to step into who I truly am, right? Because this work is layered, but stepping into this hippie is something that I always at my core knew I was something I always wanted to be. Um, I was little and thought Woodstock was the coolest thing on earth. Like, and I'm, I was not alive when Woodstock happened, but to me, the '60s always drew me. I loved the civil rights, the protesting. I loved Woodstock, the music. I loved, you know, 1968 Summer of Love, you know, just down on Haight-Ashbury, the whole like hippie movement drew me. And I believe it was because they represent peace and freedom. And it was something that as an early child, I never had, I never felt at peace. I never had freedom from my mind. Fast forward a little bit into my own healing journey and stepping into who I truly am. Um, my coaching is healing. And so that's really where this Healing Hippie has come from. I've full-on stepped into, you know, being a hippie. I'm going on the road following my favorite band, which is Dead Company. And if you don't know Dead Company, they're actually the Grateful Dead, but the latest increment that's touring. Um, and the original culture is still there. And so for me, being able to step into this hippie part of me and then help others heal is just who I truly am and everything that I've always meant to be, like intended to be.

Oh, I love that. I love that. So yes, you heard that right. Literally going on tour, going to like travel, travel the United States, going on tour, following the Grateful Dead or Dead Company and, and just doing your thing. That's so cool to me. It like astounds me that like we, that we get to choose that life of like freedom and sovereignty.

The coolest thing. And it's, you know, interesting because I, you know, I just remember like, oh my gosh, that's so cool. I wish I could do that. I wish I could follow the music. Like it was just something that I wanted to do so bad. And I thought that I couldn't do it. I thought that, you know, I was supposed to have a corporate job. I thought that I was supposed to fit in the box. I thought I was supposed to do certain things to be successful or to be happy or I didn't realize that stepping into my true self was what it takes to be successful and to be happy.

Yeah, that is so true. So true. And when did you like, when do you, for you, when did you realize that? Like when, when did that stepping or that becoming or even unbecoming in some ways like really begin for you?

So my healing journey really started when I woke up and I knew I needed a divorce from my husband. Um, this started in 2018. And it was literally in a moment and I knew I needed to divorce him. At that point, like, I went through a whole lot of stuff. I eventually found therapy probably about 5, 6 months later after I found therapy and started working through. So that was 2018 when I started therapy. 2019, I was still— I mean, let's be honest, I'm still healing now. But in 2019, I really learned about boundaries. I was having some family issues and I'm watching my life with my now ex-husband unfold. I'm watching my life with my family unfold and they're unfolding in parallel. The same things are happening. I'm feeling the same exact feelings. Um, and so in watching this all unfold, it really was this call to action that I'm the one that gets to change. Um, and because I'm the commonality, right? Like I'm the one experiencing the feelings. Um, it's happening cause I'm letting them do this is, is really the upshot. Like I'm letting them do this to me and why am I letting them do this to me? So I learned boundaries. It was my first real test in boundaries, and I learned a lot of boundaries. Yeah. Once— it was 2020 when my divorce was final and I actually moved to North Carolina. I would say that once I finally was fully divorced, moved out of that house, that's when really this stepping into my true self really, really, really started to happen. It was probably a year, year and a half ago when I stepped into the name The Healing Hippie. And again, I keep deepening things, right? So I keep stepping further and further in. I went on, I went on tour for the first time last August. It was 3 months, and I watched myself transform from being super scared to do it and not sure if I fit in, right? Because I didn't grow up on the lot. I didn't grow up in this culture, um, so it was like, am I going to be accepted? Or like, is this who I truly am? And, you know, meeting people, making friends, and just the community is just the best. So by the end of that tour, I was a different person.

Wow. And I imagine that at the end of this tour, you'll be a different person as well.

I said that to somebody 2 days ago, literally, like, I don't know who I'm going to be at the end of this tour. But I'm going to be different.

I know it's like whenever you go to therapy and you're like, I am afraid of who's going to step out on the other side of this. Yeah.

Well, that's part of this is that I think we resist healing because we're afraid. We're afraid of what it's going to look like, you know, because we don't know. We can't control it. We can allow it, but we can't, you know, it's not like, oh, you know, let me look at my watch. I've got 10 minutes right here, right now to heal. Like, that's not the way this works.

Yeah.

Yeah.

You're so right. Okay. So I'm curious, tell us a little bit. I know that you work with a lot of codependents. Tell us, tell our audience, because this is something I was thinking about before we hopped on today. I was thinking about the way that the word codependency— I think a lot of people use the word, but they don't really understand what it means. Like, to say it blatantly, I think that there is like just misunderstanding around what that truly encompasses. And I think that like in the age of mental health advocacy, which is great, but like sometimes things get watered down or, you know, you may— Yeah, can you just tell us like from your expertise and from working with the people that you do and from all of the work that you've done, tell us what that really means, like what does it really mean and how would you know if you're truly like suffering from codependency?

So I truly think that all of us are codependent, at least to an extent. I think everybody has it in them. I think that codependency, so the term came up I believe was the '80s, it was It was a term used to describe people who were enabling alcoholics is where it came from. So the Al-Anon kind of portion of it, you were codependent if you were supporting an alcoholic. The reality is, you know, alcoholics are codependents. They're, you know, anybody who put their worth in somebody else, meaning anybody who does something because they want somebody else's approval, anybody who fixes somebody because they want their approval, that's codependency right there. Take us to church, Megan. Yeah, it's in everybody. It's in everybody because we all want to be liked. It's, you know, we all want to be liked.

How do you think that surfaces in business owners? Because immediately whenever you said that, I'm like, okay, we all seek approval, you know, through building our business and especially online because you're just like inundated with so much from everyone else. Like it's not really— it's a lot different from like a brick and mortar business. Or even working in like a corporate setting where you're kind of in your own tunnel, you're in your own lane a lot of the time. And you know, so in the online space, building a business, like you are just every, every platform that you're on, every time you're scrolling, every time you go to do something for you, you're also inundated with other people's stuff. So of course you're like, there's like this, this constant cycle of putting something out, hoping that it gets the traction, hoping that it gets the likes, the approval. So I think that we, are in many cases like codependent. We are putting our worth in our business. We're putting our worth in how much money we make in our launch, in our revenue, our sales dollars, et cetera. So do you like, what is your take on that?

What do you think about that? Oh, for sure. Um, it's why I feel that I struggle with social media at times because I've had to make a very conscious choice to not watch my analytics the way that other business owners do because if I'm noticing that I'm really gaining validation from what I'm putting out there, that's where I want to step back, right? Because I want to put it out because I want to put it out. But watching those likes, you know, watching who's watching my stories like that, that to me is something that I've had to pull back from. You know, is there validity in it? Sure. Can it be useful? Yeah. But also me knowing that that was an addiction part of me, right? Like, um, I'm making a conscious choice to step back and, and to give myself a little bit of breathing room on that.

Yeah. Um, yeah, that's good.

I can totally relate to that.

Yeah.

You know, you would say, how does it show up for business owners too? I, um, I think a lot of times you're going to get some burnout because you are giving and giving and giving. Um, and you're probably not giving in the way that is fully aligned. Um, yeah. Yeah. I think you see a ton of burnout because you're just trying to seek everybody's approval. Either you're trying to, you know, the funds bringing in, the likes, the whatever that approval looks like to you, that validation, and it's never enough.

How do you know, like, if you're— if you feel like you're in that space, but how would you know, like, if you're dealing with burnout from the codependency? Like, what would that feel like, like physically even, you know, or like what would be like some day-to-day, like, like symptoms of that?

Exhaustion would be a good one. Oftentimes it can manifest as like panic attacks or anxiety. So when you start noticing that sort of thing showing up, um, a desire to not want to do it anymore, like just to be— like if you get to this point where you're— and with burnout, your, your body literally will physically shut you down if you don't shut it down before. So leading up, you might notice that like you don't want to be doing certain things. Um, that can be a sign of burnout. Um, just exhaustion in general.

Yeah, yeah. I remember in my last like weeks of teaching, or I would say even like in the last months of teaching. And it didn't take long. I only taught for like less than 2 years, probably in public school. But I remember like literally getting vertigo, like getting— I would walk, I have to go to the bathroom because I would feel so dizzy. And it was like, I just couldn't— like, I just felt like the room was starting to spin. Like, I would close my eyes and just like try to like gather myself. And, and it was— and I didn't know it then, but the more that I educated myself and I realized, okay, something has to change, I'm like, this is directly related to this misalignment in my every everyday life.

And I would, I would call that you were basically on the verge of burnout if you weren't there already.

Yep. Yep. Absolutely. And I think that even that like kind of goes back to the codependency because I remember coming into teaching and just, just my, just the way that I am, I'm super high performing anyways. And so I think that I went into it seeking a lot, you know, seeking to change the world, seeking to change the system, seeking to get the validation from the principals and administration. Seeking to be the best teacher on the block, and then to also be the best mother to the two babies at home, you know. So I, and so I feel that about like seeking the validation from other things and other people than yourself, you know. And even like, like, like, I think just as most of us listening here are high performers in one way or another. So we have to, we have to keep a check on that and make sure that we're, yeah, and it's like, how are we nurturing ourselves outside of business, like outside of what it is that you're achieving. Yeah. You know, and like whether it's just reading or going on a walk or whatever that looks like, like we have to be so careful with that. What, what are some practices that you, that you practice or that you would encourage your clients to do? Like if, if they're kind of trying to get out of the cycle, especially as a business owner, what would you encourage them to do?

First of all, exercise and movement is so key because what that does And people don't talk about this, right? But exercise movement, it actually moves energy and emotions out of your body. So instead of storing them up, so if you're getting some vertigo going on, right, you're storing some stuff in your nervous system, possibly in your head that's manifesting as the vertigo. Whereas if you're exercising, if you're intentional about moving this energy out of your body, that's how, you know, that's one way of helping you not get to that point. So that is definitely key. Another thing is time in nature, you know, anytime you can take to ground. Again, it's getting that energy out of you. It's getting all those stored emotions that you aren't processing fully through, which ultimately leads to that burnout. Anytime you can get those out, that's, that's good. Doing the things that you love. So what lights you up? What brings you joy? You know, have fun, laugh, you know, enjoy yourself. And if you don't know what lights you up, then that's definitely a good sign that you get to do some work. Yeah. Um, that you're pretty, pretty not connected. If you're like, I don't know what lights me up. It's just my business, you know?

Yeah.

Yeah.

It's just work. It's just doing the things that have to be done. How would you even go about finding those things? Like, I think it would be like this, like the connecting or disconnecting and like reconnecting, you know, like I'm— yeah.

Well, it's part of the work. It's part of the work that I get to do with clients, right? Because every client comes into me, they don't know who they are. They don't know who they are because they've gotten to this point where they're constantly pleasing everybody else, but it was never okay for them to please themselves. And so part of the work is what we do is we figure out who you are. What do you actually love to do? What do you love to do that you were never allowed to do? What do you, you know, what have you always wanted to try but never had the courage to try? And it comes from getting real quiet, real still with yourself. Meditation also really helps. Meditation is a place, if you can meditate, that you can start to connect.

I have a hard time with meditation. Do you? For me, meditation looks different, you know, and you know, it's like it doesn't have to be sitting still with your eyes closed, you know, on the floor crisscross applesauce. Like, I think for me it's like going for a walk without headphones in. Ah, okay. You know, and maybe that's not the traditional sense of it, but it's like, that is, that's me finding peace. It's like, and so, you know, letting the thoughts come in and letting the thoughts pass. But yeah, I have a hard time with crisscross applesauce meditation.

Have you ever tried some binaural beats in your headphones when you go for a walk? No, I have not. No.

Yeah.

I can send you a link. Um, just so the binaural beats, the theory behind it is that they're putting your brain into a different wavelength. And the whole thing with meditation is that when you change your brain wavelength, um, it makes it easier for information to go into your brain. And wow. So yeah, that's, that's really the theory behind meditation is that you're shifting that brainwave length. So that's easier to get information into you.

I will definitely try that. Yeah. The other thing you can do is I will meditate right before I go to sleep. I'll do a guided meditation right before I go to sleep. And then most of them that I do, so they'll either have affirmations that'll run through the night or it'll be a binaural beat that'll run through the night and you just listen to it all night.

I'm going to start playing that for Daniel, for my husband. I'm going to like, Slip it. I'm gonna like, while he falls asleep, I'm just gonna put it on for him.

Well, thank you, meditation. Yeah, I mean, it would be good for both of you really, because right before you fall asleep, your brain starts to enter theta brainwave lengths. It's— yeah, we all do it. It happens. And that theta is where you want to be to start to allow information to be easily put into your brain. Really? So yes, this— the things you think the last 5 to 10 minutes before you go to sleep and the things you think the first 5 to 10 minutes when you wake up. Super important. Super, super important because so kids, kids are little sponges, right? They pick up on everything. Well, they're always in a theta brainwave. So we're in that theta, we're sponging that information. Wow.

So would you say that theta brainwave is like a relaxation state or is it just like a free state? Like it's like, yeah, like, like you're not clogged up by anything. That's what I'm kind of like relating it to. Like your brain's not clogged up with like all of the external stimuli. Or it is, maybe, maybe it is.

Like, what would you say? Well, I would say that whatever— when your brain starts to go into that, whatever's kind of in your brain is what's going to get imprinted. You know, for people that have a hard time falling asleep because they've got racing thoughts, and I know there's people listening that, that can relate to this, you know, when you ultimately fall asleep, you're falling asleep with those racing thoughts, which then are going to lead to you waking up probably still having those same racing Yep, yep, yep. It's because you put it into your brain right before you fell asleep.

Wow, that is powerful, Megan. That's really cool. Yes, I mean, a link on that and the binaural beats, and I can even like link that in the show notes even so that our listeners, if they're like, I need to try that, that they can grab those too. Yeah, you can, you can also in YouTube type in binaural beats and there's different brain wavelengths, but you can You know, I would recommend starting with theta for anybody listening that's never done this before.

Awesome. Awesome, Megan. Okay. So I think like one more thing that I just want to touch on is because I know that this is like your secret sauce, your specialty, like this is the thing that you just like— I know because I've heard you like literally talk about like the work that you do with your clients on this. But let's talk about how the childhood, you know, things that are— things that are happening in your childhood, how that manifests in adulthood. Through codependency. Can we just touch on that for a minute?

And even— Yes.

Yeah. Let's just go there.

Let's go there. And it's actually a perfect transition, right? Because I just talked about when you're a kid, you're in this theta brainwave length and you're a sponge for information. Your subconscious mind is formed primarily before the age of 7, because that's when you are in that theta brainwave length. Okay. Um, but yeah, how you learned love as a kid is showing up in your life today. I guarantee it. When you do something and you're like, I don't know why I just did that, you know, well, you can always make that link back to what then, you know, how does this parallel to how I sought love when I was a kid? So if you give me a problem or something that's going on, we can talk about that.

Yeah. Yeah. Well, it's like, I think even what we were talking about earlier around the codependency, like with work, with achievement. So if I think back personally, if I think back to childhood, you know, my parents were addicts and very much engulfed in their own issues. So I found love through achievement. I was the trophy child. I, you know, had the all A's and the honor roll and things about that. So like I was showered in love and affection in those moments. So now I think that that absolutely manifests as in I'm like, yeah, let's have this successful business, let's have this great career, etc. So that, that's a very, very real example, right?

Because you learned as a kid that in order to get their praise, to get their love, attention, when you brought home those A's and like all these awards and achievements, you learned that was pretty good. It felt good. And that's exactly what you're doing. You're continuing through now. You know, it comes from us not being seen and heard when we are doing what we, you know, truly want to be doing as a kid because that's all kids do. Like, they're themselves authentically. But if you're yourself authentically, you want to be seen and heard for who you are authentically. And when that doesn't happen, you then start changing yourself and you start noticing, okay, well, if I do this, if I bring home an A, mom will pay attention to me. You know, it might be a fleeting like, oh, great job, Lindsey. Yeah, but it's at least a great job, Lindsey, I got that I didn't get yesterday. So maybe now if I go for 3 A's, I'll get 3 great job Lindseys, you know. And so it keeps going from there, you know. We learn how to be seen, how to be heard, and it tends to shift, shift us away from who we truly are.

Yeah, that's good. I'm thinking about like, it makes me think about just like my own children and then like the ways that they just truly are, like unfiltered, unedited, you know. And they're so vastly different, like Ellison and Atlas. They're so vastly different in their personalities. And so, yeah, business and parenthood will like bring up all of your old stuff over and over and over again. And so it's just something you have to be conscious of to not project your own crap onto them.

Yeah. And, you know, it gets deep. Recently I had a conversation with somebody who was like, you know, I had to take my kid out of the pool because they were throwing a temper tantrum. And, you know, I was so embarrassed. And, you know, we started having a conversation and I said, well, what did that show to your child? Right. That to your child, that that meant it's not appropriate to be upset about something. You know, that if you're upset about something, you've got to walk away from it, you know. And so for her as a parent, she's super embarrassed and she's bringing her child out because of her embarrassment. But yet this is exactly where her kid is learning, oh, if I'm upset, I shouldn't show it.

Yeah, that's so true.

And the reality is, yeah, we have to express our emotions.

We do. We do. And I think that like as a parent, you know, there's such a like It's tough. It's so tough because you're literally doing this work from like sunup to sundown. I mean, constantly. And so like, I have found a lot of power and like being okay with apologizing to my kids. Like if I don't react in the way that I want because my own stuff has surfaced and just, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have reacted that way. You don't deserve to be talked to like that.

I'm sorry for that. And then next time you try to do better.

Yes, absolutely. And I'll try not to do that again. And you know, mama gets frustrated and I'll say that. I'm like, I get frustrated sometimes and we have big feelings and sometimes I'm not sure how to handle it.

I'm sorry.

Yeah. And it's like, it's a truthful conversation.

I'm like, I'm doing the best I can. And it's probably not a conversation your parents ever had with you. No, no, no, because they weren't there.

Well, it was like, it's like such a different generation too, I think, you know, on top of everything else. But it's those conversations then were from guilt or from like manipulation even.

Such a different, such a different place.

Oh yeah.

And the whole manipulation thing, I mean, that's that's part of this too. We all try to manipulate to get this validation.

Yep, yep, absolutely. Yeah, and like the manipulation, but like, like, I don't know what the right word for this would be, like the pity party, like the feel bad for me thing, you know, like the parents like, feel bad for me, I have it so bad, and you as the child, you should feel bad for me.

Yeah, you've got it easy, I've got it hard.

Deep stuff to unpack there. And so this is why, I mean, but this is really just a reiteration of what so important to do this work every single day, you know, and to listen to these things and then to do the meditations even and to tunnel out the energy and to just be constantly like aware, you know, just aware of what's going on in your business and of course, but like in your body and in how you feel and then how's that showing up in your everyday life.

It's really important for us to know that we can feel emotions and express emotions and then honor them and give them space to be felt. And the other thing too is I think sometimes emotions scare people because they're, they're scared of their reactions, right? If I feel a certain way, this is how I'm gonna react, and that's what I don't want to do, so I'm gonna try to control the emotion, or I'm gonna try to control something so that I don't feel this emotion. And that's a really hard thing to do. It'll catch up to you.

Yeah, and it's so much work too. Yeah.

Oh, God.

It's a lot more work, like, trying to control everything than just saying, well, I'm just gonna have a— it's just gonna be one of those days. I'm just going to take it off and take it easy. Yeah. Yeah.

And I think that that again is part of the work, right? Because I know that I was always trying to control everything and it's exhausting. It just, you know, you can't do it. Um, and there's certain things you're going to have to like just give up on. And you know, I've watched, like, I can go back and pinpoint how I've shifted over the years, even before I started my healing journey, simply because I couldn't take it anymore.

Yeah. You're like, enough is enough. I'm done. I can't do this anymore. Yeah. Wow. I have a friend who is a few years older than me and she says, Lindsay, just wait, whenever you get into— because I'm 28 now— she's like, Lindsay, just wait. Whenever you get into your 30s, a lot of things are gonna change and you're just not gonna care as much. And so I do feel this coming on, like, as I, as I get, you know, every year it's like a little bit more. I don't care, but I think that just start owning who you are a little bit more and you're like, what do I have to prove? So that could also be a consequence of doing the work too.

I think so. Um, you know, I'm in my 40s and I think my 30s I thought were better than my 40s because I was married and I thought I was doing what I was supposed to be doing, right? Um, I started my healing journey when I was 40. My 40th birthday was actually— it was right before I knew I needed the divorce, but it was a contributing factor because again, I— my 40th birthday, I expected my ex-husband, my now ex-husband, to throw a surprise party for me. And who tells somebody about a surprise party? You're not supposed to tell somebody about a surprise party. They're just supposed to know. And when that didn't happen, I was hugely disappointed. And so, you know, for me, that was part of this whole thing. But I would say that being in my 40s, I think it's even better. Because of the healing journey, but also because I'm in a place where I can just settle into myself.

Yeah. Settle into myself. I like that. That's good. That's good, Megan. Well, thank you so much for sharing on all of this. This has been such a candid and just like real conversation and you have definitely dropped some bombs. So thank you. If you could give our listeners anything to just walk away with, maybe something that they can apply today to their life, maybe something that, you know, just, you know, some, some wisdom on top of everything that you've already shared.

What would you say? Yeah. You know, I would say we didn't really talk a whole lot about boundaries, but I would say that as a business owner, boundaries get to be your friend and that no is a complete sentence. It's okay to say no. In fact, you need to say no because when you say no to somebody else, you say yes to yourself. And the more you get to learn to do that, the better your life is going to be. I promise.
