#76: Organize Your Life and Build Wealth Faster

All right, welcome in everyone to our newest episode of Aligned and Wealthy. It's your host Lindsay here, and I have Miriam Ortiz with us here today. Miriam, I am super excited for this. We had to go ahead and hit record because I have all these things I want to talk about with you. So welcome on to the show, Miriam.

Thanks so much for having me, Lindsay. I'm looking forward to it.

Yeah, yeah, me too. So Miriam is a— and I may botch this, let me know, girl, just set me straight— but we are a certified professional organizer and a professional money coach. Is that right?

It's a money breakthrough business coach.

Money breakthrough business coach. I'm here for all the money breakthroughs. Yes. Okay, so tell us, A little bit about you, Miriam. Tell us about how in the world did you become a certified professional organizer and how does that tie in with our money? Those are two separate questions there. So you just—

Yeah, so it evolved. At a certain point, I become unemployable and decide to start my own business and thought I could be a professional organizer like so many people want to do. And then I realized quickly that, you know, when you start your own thing, you also have to be an entrepreneur. And I got interested in the entrepreneurial mindset pretty early in the process. And so the more I worked with people on their stuff, the more I realized how much it affected their productivity. And then that in turn would affect the results they were getting in their own businesses or with their own career growth. And so I started looking at the connection there. What's the thing that ties all 3 things together? Because from the outside, I could really see that most of the things they were struggling with were easy organizational fixes. But in their minds, they thought it can't be that easy. Yeah, I would look at, well, why doesn't it seem like it should be easy to get organized? Like, why do people make that harder than they need to? And I got into the psychology and the mindset of how we think and the neuroscience behind how our brains work. And it led to, you know, how do you connect all these things? And it's all about habits, it turns out. So the more habits you have, the less energy you expend, the more energy you can have if you're spending that time on the things you actually enjoy. And that in turn leads to a happier life. More in alignment with who and how you want to be. And that usually leads to more money.

Isn't it funny how simple we make that? Like, that sounds so simple. But why? Why do we get stuck, though? Why is it so hard for us, Miriam? Like, what do you see?

Yeah. Well, there's the excuses, the limiting money beliefs that really hold us back. They kind of put a whole wall in front of us every day. It's like, what, what do you mean? It's, it's the way I'm thinking, but I think this. It's like, yeah, but you act differently, so your brain doesn't believe you. I am going to lose weight, and then you eat chips. Your brain doesn't believe you anymore. I'm gonna get organized, but you don't put your keys where they go. Your brain doesn't believe you. You have to do brain training to get your limiting beliefs in alignment so that you it's easier to do the habits, but the habit, habit development itself is part of brain training. So, you know, it's all—

this is so good, Miriam. Can, can I share with you a personal example that I'm like working on right now? And it's really like, it makes me kind of sad to even like admit this, but we can only do better if we know better, you know, and if we create better habits here. So I am working on not being on my phone, like when my kids are around. I have a 5-year-old and a 4-year-old. He just turned 4. And as entrepreneurs and business owners and high-achieving women, we multitask and such. And it's very easy to pick up the phone to check the email or pick up the phone to Voxer back a client. And it's been a habit that I want to change. So I'm doing exactly what you're talking about. We can even talk about what that brain training entails. But for me, I have been telling myself I am not the type of woman who checks her phone when her kids are around. I am the type of woman who is fully present with her children. And I don't know the science exactly behind this, but I think just telling myself that I am the type of woman who— I have the type of mother who's not on her phone when the kids are around makes me not want to pick up my phone. Like, it's the weirdest thing, but it's so effective.

No, no, it's, it's actually the key. To making it easier. And it's the step that people skip several times a day when they're trying to change behavior or transform the way they interact with the world. And that is you have to know what you want and who and how you want to be is what it is. So the fact that you state it in that I want to be or I am the person that— that's a how you want to be that ties it to your behavior. Not to your thought. And that's perfect because that's gonna— it's a shortcut to the brain training thing. So, yeah. But so many people don't know what they want. So they go out and they start doing things without an end goal in mind, a desired outcome. And then they can't get there because they're working on all the busy stuff and never working, seeing the opportunities to get to the thing they want. Right there next to it.

So, like, in that, in that example, maybe they're still telling themselves, oh, I really want to be checking my phone, or, oh, I can do both things at once.

Oh no, more likely they're telling themselves, it's just real quick. Yeah, it's not gonna matter. It's, um, these people are more important than me, is what you're really telling your brain. You know, like, this is not about you. This is about the fact that you are putting other people as being more important than yourself when you are constantly looking at their notifications. What are you missing out on? Your own life is what you're missing out on. That fear of missing out— you're missing your own life whenever you check the phone. So, um, you know, I happen to be lucky enough to be old enough that we had the phone attached to the wall and a cord when I learned to communicate with people. So I'd never feel that need to check messages. If I'm in there, though, all their triggers to keep you there start affecting me, and I have to really be aware of that. And so, you know, I set alarms so I don't get too far down the Facebook or YouTube or message, whatever thing.

I did that too. I set the, the screen time limit, so, like, it'll pop up. And you know what? Since I've started this, apparently brain training. I've never called it that, but apparently that's what it is. And since I've started that, I've not hit a single limit, and this has been almost 2 weeks now. So I haven't even had a limit come up yet just because I've been so aware of— I've been telling myself I'm the type of woman who's just not on her phone unless I'm working, like unless I'm at my desk. I am— I'm just not.

Yeah, yeah. Having a plan for when and who you call and what order, and the same for social media, is super important because it just puts that limit on how much time you're going to devote to that. And nothing— so many of the things people think are urgent are so not urgent. Urgent is something on fire or bleeding out, right? It's like, are you going to the emergency room? Are you going to urgent care? Are you just going to go to the doctor and stay well? Like, you have options here, people, but it's not urgent. Not— never is returning a phone call more urgent than doing the work that you're meant to do.

Oh, that's so good, Miriam. So how long did it take you? And yeah, no, that, that, that's— I mean, it's so insightful. So how long into doing the work of professional organization? Because like you said, organization is basically just habits. It's a bunch of systemized habits put in place. So how long did it take though of you doing this work and realizing the direct link between that and wealth and that and money and that and, and wealth building?

It took a while, honestly. Like, I had inklings about it, but it took me a while to put it in some sort of framework that I could pass on to people and talk about consistently and get consistent results for the people that I work with. And listening to a lot of different perspectives about it. I didn't go with one person's thought about it. I really examined it from a variety and a, and a multidisciplinary way. So, you know, psychology and neuroscience and performance people and biology and all the different things. And then I read a bunch of novels to see how characters are portrayed and see if it held up with them. And then I actually talked to my clients and, you know, I'm very curious that way. I like to synthesize a lot of different perspectives. And it's so far it's holding up when I finally figured out that, oh, It all ties back to this brain training piece. And if I unlock that first, everything else is easier.

Who would've thought? You know, right? If I can unlock this one piece, everything else becomes easier. Okay. So let's talk about practicality. So what would this look like in my everyday life? Like right now, we're, we're, you're listening to a podcast. Those of you that are listening, and I'm looking at Miriam and in her background I see like these very neatly organized, um, like, like, uh, what are those called, like shelves. And, and on the shelves you've got, you know, everything's like divided out and I see labels. So that would be like a practical, okay, here's, or I'm organizing my office. So what would be, where, where do you start your clients with first? Is it their office? Is it their heads? Like where do you start the process first?

We actually start with that who and how they wanna be. We look at, and it doesn't have to be perfect. So the other thing is there's no perfectionism. In organizing. It's a constant ongoing editing and curating process. Same with running your business. You know, you're always letting go of your darlings. You're bringing new ideas in. It's a rotation. Everything's a rotation system, basically. So we have to figure out who and how you wanna be for the next bit of time that gives focus to the work. So, um, to use this example, it's weird, it's backwards.

Other arm. I know.

I'm like, wait, I meant to go that way. You know, each one of those magazine holders is actually a grouping of the modules I teach people on so that I can grab that easily when I'm talking to my clients. So I had to think back, who do I wanna be when I'm working with my clients? I wanna be a professional that knows right where the information is right when we need it. So that is set up so I can grab it in basically an instant. I didn't spend extra time using a fancy label maker. Those are literally file labels with Sharpie words on them. You know, it's like, how far do I need to go to be who and how I wanna be that makes it easy? Everything that doesn't belong in those notebooks is weeded out. And regularly I go back through them and, or like every time I use one, it's like, okay, what doesn't flow right now. And I am always looking to make it better for the next time.

Can we say that again? That was so powerful.

Yeah. I'm just— every time I use it, I look at how I can make it easier for next time. So there's a book called The One Thing. I can never remember who wrote it, but it's all about making it easier for next time. And that's what my whole business is about. How can we make it easier?

For next time. Yeah, the 1% rule. You know, I shared with you before we started that I had been reading, um, Atomic Habits, and he talks about the 1% rule. If, if you can only improve by 1%, or if you can make one habit more effective by 1%, you know, this quarter or this year, that 1% compounds and it grows from there.

All of it, all of organizing, the actual physical organizing is worth it because you get exponential results for incremental progress. So not losing your keys every day seems like, well, that's not going to be that big a deal. It's not that big a deal that I have to look for my keys. Are you spending 1 minute looking for your keys or 5 minutes looking for your keys? And how many days a week? And on average, people spend like 6 weeks, like 24-hour days looking for stuff in their house and office. So that's a vacation and a half. You know, like, what else could you do in 6 weeks? What else could you do in 6 days? What else could— you know, however long it is, when you carry it out to how does that impact me yearly, it's huge. But people dismiss it. It's not that big a deal. It's not that impactful. It won't make a difference. What— we don't need to bother with that. What I really need to know is what's the secret to Facebook ads. And it's like, well, consistency. And if you don't know what your message is and you don't know how much money is in your budget and you don't know when you're going to do it consistently, it doesn't make any sense at all to spend money on it.

And guess where the consistency comes from?

Comes from your habits and your life habits and organization and having all the things you need to run the Facebook ads right here. But no, it's not important. Just tell me what to do.

Tell me, just give me all the— give me the secret handbook. But wait, I can't ever look at the handbook because I don't have the time because my life is a mess.

It's the conundrum, right? I don't have the time to get organized, so I can't be better organized. Well, what if you started by being better organized? What if that was the first step instead of some weird down-the-road step that no one gets to?

Yeah. And that's totally outside of yourself. I think that this brings a level of control also, that we do actually have control over our lives. We have autonomy over making improvements that starts right here with us.. It doesn't start with a course. It doesn't start with this fancy coach or something that's outside of ourselves. It starts right here. Where can I make my life more organized and more efficient? What can I do right now to make it easier the next time?

Yeah, the control piece is really interesting too, because especially in these uncertain times, uncertainty is getting more and more uncomfortable for some people and more and more comfortable for others. And it's our brains automatically wanna maintain the status quo, so they don't like change. But entrepreneurs are in a constant state of change, and you can't know what's gonna happen for anything you do or put effort into. And so just by knowing that you can control certain things helps relieve any of that anxiety or that fear of uncertainty because you can control your physical environment. You can technically control your behaviors. It's harder than you think. So that's why you give up when it doesn't work the first time. But you— that's because you haven't practiced yet. You have to retrain a year, a lifetime's worth of brain training that you aren't even aware of by doing something over and over and over. There's no one and done when it comes to habit. Transformation. There's also no set time. Like, there used to be this thought that it was 21 days because there was an actual study where people could see through concave glasses right side up at the 21-day mark on average. Wow. But those were all astronauts training to go to the moon, and some people took longer, and it— not every habit is equally interruptive of our patterns. So that one's a particularly big one. So it would lead you to think that most would be faster, but some are deeper ingrained because you do that more often, and so it takes longer. So there's always this balance of knowing that it's practice, and there's one day it will just be natural and you won't be thinking about it anymore. It's like driving a car. Right? How many habits are involved in driving a car? We get into the car, we unlock the door in some form or fashion, we get into the car, we throw our purse on the seat or in the little thing. Maybe there's a kid in the back that had to get strapped in. You turn on the car, you take down your sunshade, you turn on the radio, you take off the emergency brake, you put it in gear, and you go. But many people do those in different orders.

That's right.

So you have a method of doing it. And when was the last time you thought through all the steps in that process?

So automatic.

Anyone does. But if you can think through those steps, it'll help give you insight into how you develop those habits. You did it over and over and over in the same way. Hmm. And now you don't think about it.

And so how many habits can we, how many habits can we create in our lives so that we don't have to think about it anymore? And then that creates the space energetically and like physically creates the space for other things that we care about and other things that we love. Exactly. May include growing the profitable, profitable business, or may include going back to school to further your career. And, and, and all the senses, you have created the space in your life just by, just by making things habits, making things organized. Now you have the space to do the things that you really want to do with that time. 6 weeks. Like, what? 6 weeks of vacation?

Exactly. I mean, and, and to put it into, you know, the, the wealth thing, I mean, I have mixed feelings about the latte factor, but how many people do you know that think it's faster to go to Starbucks than it is to brew a pot of coffee at home? I'm always like, interesting. Having Keurigs, if time is your real thing, And if it's about the flavor, you know, you can learn to make anything. You can get your own espresso machine or you can make French press like that. It's faster. People that run through fast food to pick up food on their way home because it's faster than throwing soup into the microwave or heating it on the stove. I'm baffled. We're very mixed up about time. So the other fun thing to do is just see how long it takes you to actually do things.

That's good. That's good, Mary. Okay. So if someone's listening and they're thinking, wow, you are literally talking to me. My life feels just a little disheveled. I feel like I, I'm a little all over the place. I have big goals. I've got these things that I want to achieve. And, and maybe they're even starting to organize a little bit here. They've started to clean up. Maybe they, they're in a Google Calendar now and they, and they've got there and So they're trying to make progress. What would you send them on first? So I know you said you want to, you want to identify who it is that you want, who and how you want to be, right?

Yes. And then you, you need to orient where you are now. So things like the time tracking to see where you could plug a hole or a leak in money or time. Um, you know, the money tracking thing is usually a starting point for money. Um, But then what is annoying you most? What is distracting you the most is another great place to start.

You know what mine is? I'm, I'm just like, always make this about me.

That's the perfect way to do it because then it resonates with you.

Like, I love having a podcast. I just get to talk to all these awesome people, right?

And fix yourself along the way.

I was the same way when Yeah. Yeah. So I hate— no, I don't hate it. I actually really enjoy it whenever it's not forced, but cooking every single night. And you're so right. It is not cheaper, nor is it less time consuming to go and get food. And DoorDash is terrible where I live, so that's not an option. So like cooking and making dinner every night, that is such a time and energy suck for me. So I am working on creating a plan. Now, meal planning does not always work for me either. Like prepping, meal prepping, should I say? Meal planning works, meal prepping does not. Because on Sundays I have 2 small children at home who, you know, and so it's, it's very, it's not very real, it's not realistic for me to block out 2 hours to prep meals. So let me tell you my trick and then you can tell me what you would recommend. Our professional organizer, you, you can give me your professional insight on this. So what I've been doing is every time that I do cook, I just make like double, double the amount. So it's like last night we made egg sandwiches and we like did toast and stuff. I had a webinar last night, and so I was doing really something really quick, egg sandwiches. And so what I did was I fried enough eggs for like 2 more breakfasts. So I know that, okay, this morning we'll have eggs, and then tomorrow morning we'll have eggs. And so for me, that's been the way. It's like, oh, well, I am the type of woman who does not want to have to worry about something to, you know, eat 3 times a day. And I want to be the type of woman who doesn't eat out when he's times a week. So what am I gonna do to fix this? And, and so it's like, what works for me is just making more and just storing it in Tupperware that happens to be labeled with masking tape. Blue, blue masking tape, the permanent marker, might I add.

Yay! Good job. Um, yeah, no, I think that's a great way of approaching it. Um, I do a similar thing. It's just me though, so I don't have a family, so I don't have to do quite the volume, but what I do is I like spaghetti sauce. Once a month I will make— or it's not even once a month. I will make a pot of spaghetti sauce. That's a full recipe. I will freeze two-thirds of it. I will eat one-third of it that week. The other two-thirds are split up. So I do that. And then the next week I try to do this three weekends a year. I mean a month, because I, like you, don't always like to cook on the day I planned I was gonna do it, but I try to make it happen 3 days a month. I'll make a pot of beans and do the same thing, and then I will make a big vat of taco meat and do the same thing so that by the end of the month I literally have 12 weeks of meal options.

Oh, that's good.

But I rotate through them. So This week I'm making beans, but I'm also eating one of the old spaghetti sauces, or, you know, I love it. It works out. And along those lines, I've made a reverse cookbook. So this is my favorite tip for clients. Make a reverse cookbook. Find 30 recipes that your family loves to eat. Okay. Some can be breakfast, some can be lunch, some can be dinner. They can all be whatever.

Chicken nuggets, chicken nuggets, chicken nuggets, veggie burgers, chicken nuggets, chicken nuggets.

Right. But are you making your own chicken nuggets or are they the frozen ones? Okay. So maybe it's a chicken dish that's not nuggets. There we go. But, you know, find your favorite recipe for that or your go-to recipe for that. Let go of all the other options for your chicken meal. I mean, I have like 3 chicken things. So those are my 3 favorite chicken things. I have the spaghetti sauce, I have the tacos, I have the lasagna, I have, you know, whatever it is. You have your 30 recipes. When you go shopping, you buy the ingredients for the— for those things.

And that's it. And then you always have them.

And then you always have your favorite things. And it could be literally for me, I have my niece come visit me a couple of times a month. She loves corn dogs. We have corn dogs, baked beans, and chips. Those are on my standard list. So they're always available. I have, you know, get some soups, get, get a few convenience things for those nights where you don't feel like cooking, but you match your what, who, and how you want to be, which is a person that provides healthy meals for your family and saves time and has the time to be engaged with them. What— back it out, reverse engineer it. What do you need to have that? You need to have the ingredients on hand to make things last minute based on energy levels. And stress of the day, right? How can you make that easier? Sometimes it could be everybody cooking together. Some days it could be grabbing something out of the freezer. Some days it could be opening a can.

That's really good, actually. And it's kind of like just thinking ahead. You're just trying to get one step ahead of your future self. You know, it's like, okay, how can I start prepping future Lindsay, future Miriam for success here? And it goes back to what you said. How am I going to make this easier the next time? Oh, well, by having the spaghetti sauce already prepared or already having the corn dogs in the house so that, you know, it's already here and we can just have a snack whenever, you know, whenever my family arrives.

Exactly. So it also saves money at the grocery store and stuff because you have— you end up with a pantry selection and a fridge selection that is much closer to how and when you cook than just going to the store and buying random things or trying to plan out that I'm definitely eating this on Tuesday night. Well, what if you end up not feeling like— I get migraines, so some days I'm just like, cooking's not happening. But other days I'm like, I need food, good food. So it gives you that flexibility without getting too many things in the house that you're just going to have to toss. Because no one ate them.

Yeah. Or, you know, or whenever we think about meal prepping and meal planning, we're probably on Pinterest trying to find all these recipes that someone else has given us.

Pinterest won't solve the fact that you are avoiding cooking. Mic drop.

All right, that's it.

That's the punchline. Yeah. I mean, I find so many people are trying to fix the thing that they're avoiding, and it's like, what if you just did it? Yeah. What if you did it a couple times to see what it is about it that it's annoying? It's usually not the cooking. It's not that you don't like cooking. It's that you don't have things easy set up easily to cook.

Yeah. For me, it's that I don't have the energy at the end of the day to decide what to cook. So I don't have, like, I just don't have that creative space after a full day.

That usually happens when people have too many options. Because they didn't plan. So there's some sort of sweet spot between meal planning and being too intense about, this is Tuesday, we are eating tacos.

Yeah, this is so good. Okay, Miriam. So now I want to make it full circle. So, all right. So we're doing these practices in our kitchen. We're getting on top of things that we're freeing up our time. We're feeling better about our daily, you know, what's taking up space in our life and in our daily activities. How does that relate to money? Because as, as the, the money breakthrough business coach, how does that— where's that full circle moment? Tell us, tell us about that.

Right. So often, especially women, make that connection that we don't value ourselves enough to honor our own time, to take ourselves seriously, to give ourselves the space to explore and figure out a system that works for me. And it doesn't look exactly like the one we saw on Pinterest, and that's okay. So the more we can become aware of that and bring that into alignment, that we are us and we are bringing ourselves at all times, and I need time to explore who and how that is. When you are able to do that successfully and you end up at the end of the day feeling more satisfied because you pulled off a bunch of stuff, you feel satisfaction and meaning in your life, which carries through to entrepreneurial things as well. How you do money is how you do everything. So if how you behave around people is how you do everything, and how you behave in private is how you do everything, like, all of it is connected. And if you start looking for where it's connected, it may seem silly, but like I just said, You're avoiding something by looking on Pinterest. What is the avoidance? Is that who and how you want to be? Maybe it has nothing to do with Pinterest and everything to do with the fact that you feel like you eat fast food too often and your kids are not going to be healthy when they grow up because you gave them Capri Sun or something. I don't know. Oh God. Like all those things that spin out on us. Like, what if the trick was actually making that taco meat and having tacos on Tuesdays? Huh? No, it can't be eating healthier. I felt good about doing something and it was super easy so I could still run my business. You know, like, what— where are those things that can happen? Um, I think is, is how that connection happens. When we feel worthy and satisfied and fulfilled in our day-to-day, the foundational things that allow us to do the other things it allows us to do the other things well. It's supposed to be a nurturing, supportive thing, not the thing in our way or the thing that frustrates us.

Yeah, no, you're so right. And if you feel good at home, it, it just inevitably trickles into your business. And if you know that your kids are eating well and you've provided these things and you went to the gym in the morning, you've got these routines set up, your kitchen is tidy, you're going to feel so much better whenever it's time to go set foot in your office and sit down and work for the day. Your mind is going to feel free of clutter. Your house is going to feel free of clutter. Everything just feels a lot more, um, just smoother. You know, it doesn't have all these bumps in the way, and you're not taken up by laundry. Yeah, it just feels better.

You end up feeling competent as a human being. And that, you know, that trick of make your bed every morning, it's literally so you feel like you can accomplish something. That is the reason that is one of the threshold concepts that everyone talks about, is because it makes you feel like you are capable of doing something and seeing it through to the end. And you're starting your day with that thought, which carries through to the next thought and the next behavior and the next one and the next one. So if you don't do your bed because it doesn't matter, Which is a whole different thing than I don't make my bed on the weekends, but it's not. But I've made the choice because I love to read in bed. Yeah. And so I spend a lot of my weekend times in bed reading. And so I like to have the covers available.

And the covers are all fluffy.

Yeah.

Fluffy and fluffy. It makes sense. Intentional.

Yeah, it's definitely intentional. That's a great way to look at it. The intentionality of it.

Yeah, this is so good, Miriam. Okay, so if you could send our listeners with just any like last piece of advice, any words of wisdom, any like next steps that they could take in their life. I feel like this has been so practical and so like real, like so relative to so many of us. So it's been really, really great. But what else would you send them with? Yeah. And then you're like, I don't know what we're gonna have. We're gonna have egg sandwiches.

Yeah, I mean, almost every one of my clients calls me because they have a giant stack on their desk of paper that they don't know what to do with.

What do I do with this? I'm gonna go download that. Like, as soon as we end this, I'm gonna go get that. I have a corner in my kitchen that, you know, it's the corner where the mail goes and all the forms that need to be filled out. And it's probably really simple. You know what? I bet right now I could probably simplify it to not opened, needs to be signed, needs to be turned in. Like, yeah, probably be that simple.

Yeah, it could.

We're just like solving all of life's problems right here.

Right. That's what I, you know, that's what I'm here for.

That's what we do.

Solve all the problems. Connect, make all the connections. You have to do something once and it solves like 12 different things.

It does. You know, you're so right. And it makes it easier for the next time. I think that's been the theme of this. It just, it makes it easier for the next time. Exactly. Yeah.
