#82: Working Walk with Lindsey: Pull a little magic out of your hat 🎩
10 Dec 2024 · 6 min
Lindsey Badillo argues that staying in miserable jobs and relationships is a choice, and urges you to break the pattern with unexpected moves: wear a cowboy hat to networking events, dance like nobody's watching, speak differently. She calls this the trickster mindset, pulling magic from within to disrupt the world's pull toward sameness.

Good morning. I am on a working walk, Working Walk Tuesday. I was talking to a client last night in our Australia call, and he says, Lindsay, I am going to wear my cowboy hat in the networking rooms that I go into, the speaking engagements that I show up at. And he says it half jokingly. Like, "Hahaha, I'm gonna wear this cowboy hat." He's from Australia and he recently visited Texas for one of our live events and he loved it. He had so much fun and he really likes his cowboy hat and all the Texas things. And he makes a joke that he's gonna wear his hat and I say, "Do it. Do that. Do the thing that surprises people. Do the thing that keeps people on their toes. I think that this entire world is conditioned for homeostasis. This entire world is conditioned for sameness. We pride people on staying in jobs and relationships for years, decades, even though they're actually miserable or they're not living to their fullest. And if we only get one life, where do you want to spend that? Living in complacency, complacency, or living in magic, living in a place where all things are possible, playing in and on your journey to wealth, in and on your journey to freedom. To happiness, to so much confidence and just fun in your life. So here's the thing that people are going to turn their head, tilt their head in confusion. They're going to look at you in a little bit of disbelief and they're going to say, "Is she wearing a hot pink blazer right now in this room full of black and neutrals?" Is he wearing a cowboy hat in a room full of sports coats? Did she just say that thing? Are they doing this thing in their business? Did they just go there? Do that thing. Because people want to be a part of something that's exciting, of something that generates something in their gut, make people feel something. And this is where an element of surprise and an element of magic and an element of, ooh, tricked you. Ta-da! I got a rabbit out of my hat and you didn't even know that it was there. And this, this takes the pressure off of you having to be what you've always been, having to do what you've always done. Well, I've always done business this way. My family knows me as this type of person. I don't dress like that. I don't listen to those things and say that thing, but wow, I really want to, but it's so different from who I am. Do that. Keep people guessing. Be a trickster. Be a trickster. I went to a women's retreat this year. It was an absolutely incredible experience. And we practiced embodiment practices. We danced and we cried and we shook and we made crazy noises in a really safe container. And it was absolutely life-changing. And these words don't even do it justice. It was in Sedona, Arizona. It was absolutely magnificent. And one of the things that the leader of the retreat said. She was a mentor who I followed for 10 years, over 10 years, before my daughter was born, before I was a mom or even a businesswoman, before this, uh, phase of my life or this season. And she says, be a trickster. Be the trickster. Be the one who— I played a trick on you. You thought you knew me. You thought you had me figured out. I got you. And, oh, the sigh of relief in hearing that, and just like the permission slip that that gives us to just be who we want to be, sell the thing that we want to sell, learn the language, practice the hobby, wear what you want to wear. Because now you get to branch out of homeostasis. You get to play in your life, and you don't have these expectations on who the world told you that you should be, because 99% of the world is not living to their truest potential. They are not playing full out. They are not living in play and fun and magic and being unreasonable with their goals, with what they want, with their relationships, their marriages. They're not doing the thing that you really want to be doing, but that they had told themselves due to conditioning that they could do. So I encourage you, I invite you today to do that little thing that you do where you pull a little magic out of your amazing being.
