Hello and welcome.
I'm Marcel Peake, your host and on in today's episode, we're going to be talking about something intriguing. So it's starting to emerge in the world of diabetes and weight loss management drugs. It's called the Ozempic holiday. So during holiday seasons, a lot of times individuals that are on these treatments are considering pausing the medication so they can enjoy their birthdays, their holidays. So what does this mean for their health and treatment plan? And why do we need a pause for these special occasions? So drinks like Ozempic, wegovy, Mounjaro have actually become game changers, as you've heard me talk about so many times, for many struggling with meat management and diabetes. So we know their active ingredient is semaglutide and trisepatide for Mounjaro. And they work by reducing the food noise in the brain, especially quieting thoughts about food, but they also limit your appetite and desire for food. So as we head into holidays or birthdays or New Year's or, you know, Hanukkah, they are all contemplating having a pause. So why would we want to do that? Well, it's not just indulging in holiday treats or birthday treats or New Year's, These medications actually change the way users experience food, sometimes leading to a billion, oh, I'm not interested for certain foods. So now on the all the platforms, you know, from Facebook to Reddit to TikTok, users are actually sharing some of their stories about skipping doses and enjoying holiday meals more fully so that they can avoid feeling that sense of fullness which comes with these medications. But here's the deal and that's there's a cautionary side to this. And many doctors are warning that stopping and starting the GLP1 agonists like Ozempic and Mongero can actually lead to side effects like nausea. And moreover, this kind of off on really contradicts the whole idea of these medications. And we know that the effectiveness of the drug depends on consistent use. So what about the logistics of pausing? According to many of the drug manufacturers, there are specific guidelines for missing the doses. And if you need to change your injection day, make sure that it's 72 hour gap. But here's the thing, if we're needing to do that, are we really dealing with what needs to be dealt with? And I am grateful that the drugs are out there, I really am, because it's taught us about obesity in a different way. And what it's telling us is that so many people have the noise of food that they're really having cravings or they don't know when to stop their eating a meal. But I think there's other alternatives that we can use that might be as effective. But it really helps us understand that we do need to do something about that so that people can follow a plan long term and not spend the enormous amounts of money that they are. Medications and many people are now wanting to continue after they've lost the weight loss. And again, what I reiterate is we do not know the long term effects, you know, five years down the road if you're not diabetic and you're using these medications. So I'm just intrigued by this idea that people want to take a pause because they don't like how full they.
Are, they don't like that they have.
An aversion to foods and they really want to enjoy these things with their family and friends. So, you know, if you're wanting to stop the medication for a birthday or the holidays, this really leads me to think that we need to have another solution. And that other solution needs to be probably a more holistic plan to find out why the noise of food is there and what can we do to help if somebody has what we call leptin resistance, meaning they don't have that ability to know when to stop. So I'm thrilled that you stayed with me for the conversation in regards to the weight loss medications. And I'll continue to bring you the newest information as I update you on a regular basis. So if you like this, please share this with others and stay tuned for more to come on the newest things that are coming out in the literature about the weight loss medications.
