In this segment of The Startup CEO Show, Nick Franklin, Founder and CEO of ChartMogul, explains that achieving the first $1 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR) is relatively straightforward if a product has market demand and the founder is skilled at sales—essentially a brute‑force effort. However, moving from $1 million to $10 million ARR is far more challenging. Between those milestones, companies encounter new dynamics such as churn, the need for strong customer retention, and the necessity of upselling existing customers. To reach $10 million, a startup must evolve into a more structured, mature organization rather than relying on the simple tactics that got it to the first million.
