First up, the AI search revolution is officially reshaping the travel advertising landscape. Google has begun placing sponsored travel ads within AI powered search engines like iask, a move that signals a major monetization shift in how search will work in an AI first world. For the first time, users asking generative queries like Best ways to get to NYC are seeing links from American Airlines, Theater, Kayak and others pop up directly beneath AI generated answers. This Rollout uses Google's AdSense for Search program, traditionally reserved for standard websites, now extended to emerging AI chat engines. While Google's own Gemini hasn't adopted this yet, the strategy is keep travel ad revenue flowing by embedding it into the next generation of search experiences. It comes on the heels of a court ruling that Google had used anticompetitive tactics in ad tech, a decision that could eventually open up new opportunities for travel brands navigating the shifting sands of online discovery as travel planning moves beyond keywords and into conversational AI, advertisers will need to rethink how they appear in the AI powered booking journey. TripAdvisor, meanwhile, is leaning hard into AI to drive both revenue and relevance. In its Q1 2025 earnings call, CEO Matt Goldberg reported a 1% revenue increase to $398 million, beating expectations, and credited much of the momentum to continued growth in experiences through Viator and evolving AI strategies. Even as the travel market adjusts to macroeconomic pressures, consumers are still defending travel as a category and prioritizing experiences, especially those within budget. Vator saw a 10% year on year revenue increase and a 15% bump in bookings, reinforcing the sector's strength. At the same time, TripAdvisor is investing in AI partnerships with platforms like Perplexity and OpenAI to refine how it attracts high intent traffic and reimagines the user journey, Goldberg said. The goal is an AI first product execution culture, with generative trip planning becoming deeply embedded in the TripAdvisor experience with Viator, focusing on B2B product listings and personalized suggestions, and the core brand testing new ways to use AI for loyalty and retention. TripAdvisor is repositioning itself not just as a metasearch tool, but but as a fully integrated AI optimized travel assistant for the modern explorer.
