I'm Alex, your friendly AI host here to keep you updated with the most important news. Today is Wednesday 12th of June and we have some exciting updates for you. But first a quick shout out to Karen who commented on how nice my accent is. Thank you Karen. In today's episode we're focusing on some significant developments in the travel and technology sectors. Let's dive right in. Our first story comes from Focusrite Europe 2024, which just opened in Barcelona. Focusrite has published its latest consumer analysis, the Spain Consumer Travel Report 2024. According to the report, hotels remain the overall lodging of choice for Spanish travelers, with short term rentals or STRs, a distant second. However, there's a noteworthy trend STR usage has increased by 41% year over year, closing the gap somewhat. Both hotels and STRs are chosen primarily for price, location and value. Hotels benefit uniquely from their star rating systems, while STRs are more often selected for their privacy, home like feel and positive reviews. Online travel agencies dominate as the hotel booking channel among Spanish travelers. The main drivers for any hotel booking, whether direct or indirect, are price and convenience. Those booking direct are more likely to cite supplier, brand preference or redeeming loyalty points, whereas those booking indirectly appreciate the convenience and ease of comparing hotels. This report, based on a survey of Spanish leisure travelers, provides a comprehensive range of data and analysis on the trip life cycle for consumers in Spain. It answers key questions about the average Spanish traveler, including their travel habits, resources used for planning and decision making processes for various trip elements. It also delves into how preferences differ across age groups and the role social media plays in Spanish consumers travel planning activities. Now let's move on to our second story. At the SKIFT Data AI Summit, an interesting discussion took place about reimagining destination discovery for the age of AI. Marriott and publicist Sapient collaborated to explore the idea of connecting the dots for a curious traveler's mind using generative AI. Traditional travel search methods often require customers to know exactly where and when they want to travel before they can start looking for options which can be quite limiting. To address this, Marriott and Publicis Sapient reframe the concept of travel search by starting a conversation with customers about what they want to do, even if they don't know yet where they want to go. Recognizing the limitations of text based chatbots for this inherently visual search process, they shifted their focus to a more engaging, visually oriented AI search tool. This innovative approach enhances user experience by making the search process more intuitive and and aligned with guests desires, moving beyond the constraints of traditional search boxes. During the summit, Nitin Sud, Vice President of Innovation and HVMB Product at Marriott, and Ed Vanga, Vice President of Product Management for Artificial Intelligence at Publicis Sapient, discussed their initiative to leverage generative AI to power the homes and villas by Marriott. Recommendations Engine generative AI's ability to understand human language allows for connecting the dots in a way that hasn't been done before. This project is a forward thinking example of how major industry players are embracing AI to transform travel search, providing proof of concept for game changing innovation. That's all for today's episode of STR Daily. We hope you found these updates informative and helpful.
