We aim to provide valuable information to help you stay ahead in in this dynamic industry. In today's episode, we'll be discussing two major Amsterdam's fight against overtourism and the latest trends shaping Travel technology in 2024. First up, Amsterdam is grappling with the impact of overTourism. With over 23 million visitors in 2023, the city is one of the most visited destinations globally. But now it's seeking a balance, Amsterdam Deputy Mayor Sofyan Embarki said. It's about behaving, decreasing visitor numbers and bringing a balance back in our city. The city's new measures include limiting cruise ships, reducing short term rentals and blocking new hotel developments. By 2026, fewer cruise ships will be allowed to dock at the main terminal and by 2035 the terminal will move out of the city center altogether. Short term rentals will face stricter regulations, aiming to reserve more units for residents instead of tourists, Embarki emphasized. Houses in Amsterdam are to live in, not to rent them to tourists. Hotels are also being scrutinized, with the city blocking new developments and tightening existing policies. Amsterdam currently has 41,000 hotel rooms and 92,000 beds, Embarki stated. We have enough rooms. The city is also cracking down on party tourism, running its stay away campaign to deter tourists looking for reckless partying in the red light district. This includes banning public cannabis consumption on the streets of the red light district and efforts to relocate it indoors to manage overcrowding. In our next story, we turn to the latest trends in travel technology and as discussed in a recent focusrite webinar, generative AI continues to dominate headlines, with experts discussing its mixed ROI and potential. Mike Coletta, focusrite's senior analyst of research and innovation, highlighted the importance of tech adoption in travel, saying, more than ever, travel businesses that don't embrace emerging technologies are on a path toward obsolescence. Generative AI is being integrated into customer interfaces, back end operations and even chatbots. However, the return on investment has been varied. While some companies report increased efficiency and engagement, others like Expedia, have seen minimal impact on revenue or conversion. Another key topic was self sovereign identity and biometrics. Norm Rose, senior technology and corporate market analyst, spoke about SSI's potential to empower travelers to control their personal data, leading to more personalized and frictionless travel while reducing fraud risks. Travel companies are also keeping an eye on central bank digital currencies. These state controlled digital currencies could revolutionize the travel industry by combining the efficiency of cryptocurrencies with with the stability of traditional banking. Rose emphasized that 134 countries are exploring CBDCs and travel companies should prepare for this shift. That's all for today's episode of STR Daily powered by Boostly.
