First up, tourism in Asia Pacific is seeing a patchwork of progress and pressure. Sri Lanka is riding a wave of optimism as after hitting 900,000 tourist arrivals by early May, weeks ahead of its 2024 pace. With hopes pinned on India, China and an emerging casino industry, Sri Lanka is aiming for 3 million visitors and $5 billion in revenue by year's end. Meanwhile, the Philippines is facing a more sobering reality, a subtle but sustained drop in international arrivals, down 2% in April and just under 1% year to date. Sharp declines from key markets like China and South Korea are dampening overall growth, even as arrivals from Australia, Japan and the US tick upward. Across the region, investment momentum hasn't slowed. Greentree is expanding aggressively in Malaysia, Club Wyndham adds another resort in Australia and and Galaxy Macau's luxury capella villas are soft launching with high hopes. In the Philippines, the Nustar complex is raising the bar with oversized suites and private villas. Whether it's hotel conversions in Bangkok or new casino resorts in Cebu, the region remains a hotbed of hospitality development. But success will hinge on targeting the right markets with experiences that match evolving traveler expectations. At the same time, the short term rental world is leaning harder than ever into tech. And it's not just about automation. According to Hospitable's new survey of STR hosts, nearly 97% see technology as critical to their success, with tools like dynamic pricing software, smart locks, AI automation and direct booking websites gaining ground. While Airbnb and VRBO still dominate, over half of respondents are now driving bookings through their own channels to boost profitability and control guest relationships. What's more, many self managing hosts are walking away from traditional property management companies confident in their ability to deliver highly personalized service that big brands can't replicate the competitive edge in today's market. Personalization More than 74% of hosts say it's their biggest differentiator and they're using tech to deliver that experience. At scale. As AI continues to weave deeper into operations and guests crave more human connection, independent hosts are carving out a bold, tech enabled path forward. Whether it's a boutique villa in Bali or a city flat in Bangkok, the future of hosting is looking smarter, more direct, and more personal than ever.
