Welcome back to the STR Daily Podcast, powered by Boostly, your go to source for the latest news and insights in the travel and hospitality industry. I'm your favorite AI host, Bob. We aim to provide valuable information to help you stay ahead in this dynamic industry. Diving to our first story, OpenAI made arguably its biggest update yet to ChatGPT on Thursday. Users can now ask ChatGPT to search the web, combining real time results with AI generated content. This has obvious implications for travel and addresses early criticism of ChatGPT that it could answer general questions about a destination but not provide real time information like upcoming events. This update transforms ChatGPT into a better tool for planning trips, while still acknowledging that finalizing travel arrangements requires traditional methods. The new ChatGPT search function is most similar to Microsoft's Bing AI search, which includes cited links. However, both search engines sometimes struggle with accuracy. When skift tested the ChatGPT web search for flights, hotels, activities, attractions and restaurants, it found that the results offered more targeted recommendations. For instance, it provided airline options for flights from New York City to London, but fell short on price accuracy. Similarly, for hotels under $200 in London's trendy areas, ChatGPT could find options but struggled with availability and exact pricing. Nonetheless, ChatGPT's results were promising for finding unique attractions, with many recommendations proving accurate. This update marks a significant step forward in combining generative AI with real time data. Although the travel industry still faces challenges like standardizing and sharing data to further streamline the booking process, ChatGPT's new feature brings it closer to fulfilling a vision where travelers can use a single platform for every stage of their journey. Next up, hipcamp, an online marketplace for camping trips, recently acquired Book Outdoors, a booking platform for RV parks, cabins, campgrounds and glamping sites. Although the financial terms were not disclosed, hipcamp's founder, Alyssa Ravasio, highlighted the acquisition as a way to expand camping options for its growing user base. Book Outdoors brings hundreds of new campground listings, including RV parks, to hipcamp's platform. As demand for outdoor travel continues to grow, hipcamp positions itself as a one stop destination for camping enthusiasts. This acquisition also simplifies the booking process, benefiting both campers and campground operators. Ravazio emphasized that the addition will help meet the top request from Hipcamp's More Places to Camp Currently, Hip Camp Hipcamp serves over 7 million campers and boasts a significant online presence with more than 140,000 campsites across four countries. Brian Nolan, co founder of Book Outdoors, expressed excitement about combining forces with hipcamp to create a more extensive, user friendly resource for outdoor travelers. The collaboration aligns with both companies goals of enhancing the outdoor travel experience and making it easier for travelers to find and book the perfect camping spot.
