First up, international association meetings continue to be a powerful barometer for global destination performance, and the latest ICCA rankings offer a revealing snapshot of 2024's top players. The US remains the global leader in country rankings, with Vienna returning to the top spot for cities just edging out Lisbon by a single meeting. However, despite a 9% year on year increase, the total number of international meetings remains nearly 18% below pre pandemic levels. The ICCA data also shows that while large meetings only make up 8% of the total, they account for nearly 60% of all economic impact, underscoring their importance for destination marketing organizations and convention bureaus. Yet it's crucial to remember that ICCA's methodology excludes large swaths of the industry like non rotating domestic association events or massive corporate meetings. That means cities like Vienna, which reports over 700 international congresses, may be delivering far more impact than ICCA's narrow data suggests. For a fuller picture, analysts increasingly turn to alternate rankings from the Union of International Associations and economic impact estimates, which show cities like Barcelona leading in attendee spending and destinations like Cape Town and Melbourne punching far above their weight in large scale event hosting. Meanwhile, the conversation around AI's role in travel planning is becoming more nuanced, especially as critics argue that most existing AI travel scenarios miss the $3 trillion opportunity hiding in plain sight. While platforms like Kayak and Accor debate how to personalize agentic AI experiences within existing booking flows, voices like Robert Matsuoka, former head of product engineering at TripAdvisor, suggest we're looking in the wrong place entirely. Most travelers, he says, don't start their journey on an ota. They start by dreaming out loud in social media threads, group chats or creator led content. That's where AI should step in, capturing vague emotion led intent like Europe in the fall with no crowds and turning it into executable, optimized itineraries. The Challenge isn't replacing OTAs, it's solving the computational problem of breaking down and reassembling complex travel dreams into bookable products. Matsuoka advocates for a new kind of platform, one that lives where travelers plan, not where they book, and operates as a two sided marketplace that connects this detailed intent with agencies, suppliers, and yes, even OTAs. If AI can close that gap between inspiration and execution, it may not just change who wins in travel, it could redefine what winning even looks like.
