How to pick the right social media channel for you

Mark Simpson advises hospitality business owners to stop chasing every new platform and instead find where your ideal guests actually spend time online. Survey your customers, pick channels you can sustain, and focus on making content rather than just scrolling.

Say thank you for sponsoring this podcast. So, without further ado, let's get on with the show. Get caught by the shiny object syndrome. Now, this has happened really recently with the event, with the emergence of clubhouse and TikTok booming. There's business owners all over the world now, not just hospitality, who are going, well, should I be on this platform? And my advice to you will be, number one, do you enjoy it? So do you enjoy the idea of being on this platform, whether it's Instagram or TikTok? Because if you don't enjoy it, you are never going to get good at it and you are never, it's never going to work for your business because you'll start and you'll give up. So my advice would be, are you really, really wanting to be on, say, TikTok because everybody's on it, or are you just doing it for the sheer fact that you will enjoy making videos, you enjoy making content, and you want to see if that can really help your business. So my advice would be, number one, find out where your audience or your potential audience hang out. So are they all on Facebook right now or are they all on Instagram? And again, you can do this by doing a real quick survey. You can send out an email, send out a text message, maybe put out a post on a couple of social medias, or just ask your guest the next time you see him, say, hey, where do you spend the majority of your time on social media? Where do you spend the majority of your time on social media? And they'll tell you. And if after 100 people or 50 people, you get one common theme, where that is where you need to focus because that is where we're spending most of the time. A big part of the book Direct Playbook is my first book that I'm writing this year and I've just done this chapter so it's fresh in mind is talking about, number one, who is your ideal guest? Number two, where do they hang out? Number three, how do you attract them? So we go through those three steps in each different section of the chapter and what is really prevalent is that if you don't do number one, if you don't know who they are, then two and three are irrelevant. So take a piece of pen and paper, figure out who is it you really want to be coming through the door. Who is your ideal guest? Where are they hanging out? Then once you've done that, you'll get the answer. Now you can still go on to things like Instagram and clubhouse or TikTok or wherever just for your own fun and enjoyment. But if you do do that, number one, don't spend all your time on there. Number two, you know, get inspiration from it. So even if you aren't going to use that video on TikTok, for example, or Clubhouse, can you get inspiration of something that you can then talk about on Facebook or a blog or an email? So that's what I really would recommend that you do. Don't try and be on all the platforms. Don't get caught by that shiny object syndrome. Instead, figure out, number one, where are your ideal guests spending most of their time? Could it be in just one Facebook group? And you could literally spend all of your time in there and we'll talk about that on a future video. Or number two, make sure that if you are going to use these other channels that you do it sparingly because the worst thing to do on social media is to stop being a consumer and and not a producer. You need to be a producer on social media because if you're just a consumer, then you're wasting your time. Okay, this is another one of my daily teachings, my daily lessons that I am putting out on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn. I am on all the places because I'm fortunate to have a team to put me on all of these places with Boostly. Now I hire people that do this for me. I record this video, I send it to them and they post it for me. So wherever you are consuming this, thank you so much for being on here.
