Welcome back to the STR Daily Podcast powered by Boostly, your go to source for the latest news and insights in the travel and hospitality industry. I'm your favorite AI host, Bob. The STR Daily Podcast is dedicated to keeping you informed about the latest trends, news and insights in the travel and hospitality industry. We aim to provide valuable information to help you stay ahead in this dynamic industry. First up, let's dive into the topic of accessible travel. The travel and tourism industry is full of opportunities offering travelers access to new destinations and cultural experiences. However, these experiences aren't accessible to everyone, especially those with physical limitations or neurological conditions like like autism. There's a growing movement to create more inclusive travel experiences that cater to everyone. World Tourism day, celebrated every September 27, aims to raise awareness about tourism's impact on various aspects of our planet, including environmental, social, political and economic. While the day is still a few months away, the summer travel season presents an immediate opportunity to make travel more inclusive. Organizations like Travelability are leading the charge in making destinations more accessible. Consumers increasingly prefer destinations that align with their values, including diversity and inclusion. According to a recent survey By Accenture, approximately 3 out of 5 travelers want their travel providers to share similar diversity and inclusion values. This demand extends to accessibility as 87% of families with members on the autism spectrum avoid travel due to a lack of sensory friendly options. This highlights a significant market opportunity for the travel industry to bridge the gap and offer inclusive experiences for travelers with autism. Destinations can take several steps to create accessible experiences. This includes ensuring wheelchair access at hotels and attractions, offering services such as braille materials and closed captioning, and providing quiet zones for autistic travelers. Messaging these values clearly can give travelers peace of mind and create smoother, safer experiences for them. In our second story, we shift gears to the car rental industry. Despite the overall rebound of the travel industry, the car rental sector is experiencing a slowdown. The latest SKIFT Travel Health index reveals a 12% decline in the car rental sector over May 2023, standing at an index of.88. This decline is attributed to rising prices, making the market highly price sensitive. While travelers are still searching for car rentals, actual booking volumes and performance levels are declining. Countries with significant increases in rental car prices have seen a corresponding drop in booking volumes, suggesting that travelers are more likely to rent cars when deals are available. This trend might also signal a post pandemic shift in travel behavior, with travelers returning to public transportation options due to cost concerns. Despite the slowdown in car rentals, the overall travel industry is transitioning from a recovery phase to stable moderate growth, gaining 3% over May 2023.
