Speaking from focusrite Europe, Mark Ross Smith, CEO of Loyalty Status Coitu, argues that while points and miles have been the traditional currency of loyalty programs, they're no longer enough. Status, he says, is the real driver of high margin repeat business. Yet most loyalty teams are disproportionately focused on on the financial engine of point accrual and redemption, leaving the elite experience underdeveloped. By rebalancing that focus and investing more in status driven perks, brands can tap into a deeper layer of customer loyalty, particularly with top spenders and frequent travelers. Ross Smith believes this status first approach could help brands attract younger generations into loyalty tiers earlier, building long term emotional buy in and spend. Meanwhile, Robert Wesley, CEO of MI Protocol, agrees the model needs a shakeup, but sees the core issue as a lack of customer centric design. He criticizes the current ecosystem for devaluing rewards and treating loyalty as an internal arbitrage game rather than a meaningful way to engage travelers with such low switching costs across the travel industry, Wesley argues that brands must rethink their value propositions and embrace technology like AI and blockchain to personalize, simplify and humanize loyalty. He believes the travel industry's reward systems have grown stale from tradition and that a new era of loyalty must be driven by transparency, real value and experiences that travelers actually care about.
