Mark Shust (creator/uploader) demonstrates, in a short YouTube tutorial, how Magento's default headblocks XML (in the blank theme) corresponds to a page configuration XSD that defines which layout XML tags can appear in the HTML head. He shows using editor navigation (command-click) to open the page configuration XSD and the head tag XSD, which together act like a self-documenting API listing available tags and grouped attribute types (such as link type for CSS link and font elements).

If we take a look at the default headblocks XML file in Magento's blank theme, we'll see an example of a page configuration file in Magento that includes the CSS on the page. This file is the layout XML file that adds all of the tags, usually in the HTML head of all pages. If we command click into this page configuration XSD file, we'll see all of the available XML we can use, and if we again command click into the head tag XSD file, we'll basically see a self documenting API of sorts of all of the tags available. Some of these, such as link type, are groups of attribute settings and validations that apply to multiple other tags such as the CSS link and font elements, and this head type defines all of the tags available to us in the HTML head. We can use these XSD tags so we don't need to constantly wonder what tags are available to us.
