Hey there Magento devs. Have you ever ordered a large, delicious pizza, anticipated all that melted cheese and crust perfection, only to open the box and be faced with a not so warm, not so fresh, rather tough bite of reality? That's about how I felt when I recently read a new blog post from Adobe. If you're new in the Magento community, you might have seen this recent blog post by Adobe. They put together A list of 25 Adobe Commerce or Magento themes that that your customers will love. On the surface, this sounds like a thoughtful gesture, right? The good folk at Adobe want to help merchants make their sites more engaging and user friendly, so they put together this list as a helpful guide and I was eager to see what they had to say. But here's the kicker. These themes they've recommended come from places like Template Monster, themeforest, and Envato Elements. Now, if you work with Magento on the regular like I do, those names might give you a case of the not so fresh pizza feeling. These marketplaces, while popular, are known in the Magento community to offer themes which aren't, well, shall we say, up to par? More on that in a moment. First, let's discuss why Adobe's choice to promote these particular themes from these specific marketplaces seems a bit off. Adobe's a huge significant influence in the digital world. Their opinions and recommendations carry a lot of weight. So this blog post can misguide those new to Magento or those merchants seeking to improve their storefront without the technical knowledge or know how to know that they are opting for a fast food version of a Magento theme. Let's start by understanding what a theme is and why it's crucial. Themes control the visual layout and aesthetics of your Magento store. Well, actually any e commerce store for that matter. It's like the visual topping of our metaphorical pizza. It's what keeps your consumers engaged, leads them from one element to another, and refines their overall user experience. Third party Magento themes may seem like a really easy, quick way to get your e commerce store up and running. They come preloaded with flashy designs, a panel of configurable options, and the promise of a plug and play infrastructure. But here's the reality. These themes come bundled with bloatware, extra modules and dependencies that could be way too overwhelming for what your E commerce store needs. And what does all this extra stuff lead to? Performance issues. A slow loading website is like a pizza getting delivered two hours late, and by the time it arrives, all your guests have already left. Additionally, the coding quality of these third party themes are often leaves a lot to be desired. It's like biting into a thin and crispy crust when you were promised a thick and fluffy. A poorly coded theme is far from ideal for your store's health and it risks your website's efficiency and even your business's reputation. Plus, cleaning up bad code can be time consuming and costly and much more so than creating a custom theme from scratch. I'm intricately familiar with this problem because before becoming a Magento teacher, my specialty was those rescue projects. You know, those projects that typically involve complete rebuilds of magenta storefronts. Because the merchant chose to go with one of these pre made themes, the decision to move forward with a third party theme could very much be a fatal one for your Magento store. Picture your favorite pizza place. You might like it because they balance all the ingredients perfectly. They layer the toppings just right. The crust is just here. Specifics. In short, it's uniquely custom, customized to your taste. Wouldn't you want your Magento store to reflect your brand's unique flavor just as well? This is the real power of where custom themes come in. Building a custom theme is like preparing a pizza just the way you like it. Instead of relying on pre prepared toppings and ingredients and discs of frozen concrete, you can be right in there kneading the dough, hand packing fresh ingredients, layering them carefully, and then watch the magic happens as your creation bakes to perfectly perfection. Meticulous. Yes. Worth the effort? Absolutely. So what's really the big advantage here? Well, firstly, when you create a custom theme, you have the freedom to structure your website any way you want. This means a website layout that reflects your brand's spirit and caters best to your products or services. No more fitting into the constraints of a third party theme and what it has to offer. Secondly, you can say goodbye to bloatware. Remember all those extra modules that come with pre setup themes? Well, no more of those. This streamlining will result in a more efficient website that loads fast and delivers a very smooth user experience. Furthermore, custom coding ensures high code quality. This can seem insignificant, but this is perhaps the largest aspect that can really set apart a successful project from a failed one. Quality code ensures maintainability and speed and gives you so much more control in terms of code customization. Now, creating a custom theme may seem like a daunting task, but trust me, it's a journey worth taking. And you don't have to take the trip alone. There's a roadmap. Learning resources, courses and guides available at many places online. For example, My training website Macademy offers a course titled Magento 2 Power Theming. This course will guide you through the essentials of creating a custom theme in Magento according to all of the best practices. But I'm not just here to promote my course. You see, Magento's beauty lies in the flexibility and the community that surrounds it. There are so many other resources and Magento professionals out there who can guide you towards creating a custom theme that matches your exact needs. And you don't even need to stick with Luma because alternative storefronts such as Hoover offer a completely different slice of pizza that may taste even better than the one you were expecting. So we've come down to the crust of the matter here, and that's that there is definitely a disconnect between Adobe and the Magento developer community. It's like ordering a pizza from a renowned global chain only to realize the local pizzeria down the street offers a much more authentic taste. It's not to say that Adobe's efforts are not appreciated. They've certainly made a lot of strides to improve the Magento ecosystem in so many ways, but the recent blog post says steers new merchants down a less than optimal path. Promoting third party themes from notoriously low quality marketplaces implies a highlighting problem. It means some significant players in our field just aren't listening to or connecting with the real experts, developers and seasoned merchants who work with Magento on the daily so while it's tempting to breeze through the setup process with an off the shelf theme, the real value in building your storefront lies in customizing your store according to your company's very specific needs, not making it fit into a predefined mold. This may seem like a pretty harsh critique, but it comes from a place of wanting to see the ecosystem flourish, wanting to see businesses leverage the true power of Magento and what it has to offer, and wanting to get accurate information to those clients and merchants that may be new to building a new Magento storefront. Let's revisit our pizza metaphor and I swear I'll never use it in another video again. Imagine you walked into a pizza joint and saw a pre cooked pizza just sitting there. It looks okay, a little bland perhaps, but next to it are some fresh ingredients. Dough, sauce, cheese, an array of toppings. You have the choice to take the lukewarm pizza now or wait just a few minutes to get one hot off the oven exactly to your liking. Which one would you choose? If you like this video.
