Mary Koska and Ohana OT explain why anxiety isn't always psychological. Unintegrated primitive reflexes like the Moro reflex, incomplete nervous-system maturation, and sensory processing disorders can trap your body in chronic high-alert, causing fatigue and protective behaviors that look like OCD.
Hi, I'm Mary Koska with Ohana ot. I'm one of the senior therapists here and I'm just going to talk to.
You about some interesting causes of anxiety.
That you may not be aware of. And you know, a lot of us are aware of like stress, emotional things can even just be biochemical.
Those are common causes of anxiety.
But what most people don't realize is that very unknown but very common cause of anxiety is a lack of maturity in our nervous system that we have not integrated some of our primitive reflexes. And one of the most common one is the Moro reflex. And that one is wired to all the sensory systems. And basically it makes our body just.
Be on this state of high alert.
And can just cause fatigue and just constant state of feeling stressed and anxious. And so that is the reflex that the infant has to protect itself. And when it's not fully integrated, boy.
Does it just wreak havoc on our nervous system. And another one is just that a lot of people are just have a sensory processing disorder and they, they are overreacting to all kinds of ordinary stimuli.
So whether it's sound or light or.
Touch, and there it just puts their body in a state of defensive mode that's not a typical way of feeling.
And that can cause all kinds of.
Problems and can even cause some kind of like OCD type behaviors that you're just always trying to protect yourself from these different senses and just a constant state of anxiety. So the really wonderful thing is here at Ohana we have a very, we have a number of ways to address these. And with our program it's very all.
Natural and it's fun and it's easy and affordable.
