How ‘Ohana OT got it’s name

Mary Kostka, founder of Ohana OT, explains why she named her pediatric clinic after the Hawaiian word for family. The name reflects her commitment to treating children and families as a connected unit rather than isolated patients.
Hey, Mary Koska here with Ohana OT owner and founder. Today's video is just going to be about how ohana got its name. So my husband actually named it. Ohana is the Hawaiian word for family. And I was struggling to try to think of a name that really embodied the spirit of what our place would be all about. And when we first started thinking of a name, we were up here in Leavenworth and everything here is Mount this or Dur this. It's a Bavarian themed village. So when I thought about those names, I thought, well, you know, I might not stay in Leavenworth. I might have clinic in Wenatchee, and then it wouldn't make as much sense. And while I knew I was going to focus on pediatrics, I really knew that I was really going to be working with a whole family. And I really wanted a name that embodied the whole family. And my background is that pretty much from the time I was young, I can even remember in high school, well, even in elementary school, being pretty obsessed with Hawaii, even though I had never been there. And even in high school I had a mural on my wall that. Now that I've been to Kailua in Kauai. No, I'm sorry, in Oahu. In Oahu, Yeah. I think it's the scene from a beach there. It looks so familiar. So I just always loved Hawaii. And about 15 years ago, I was fortunate enough to actually get to start learning real traditional hula and Hawaiian culture from Momi Palmeri. She's a hula kumu here in Leavenworth, Washington. And so for 15 years, I've been learning just so much Hawaiian culture and I love to dance. So that night when Pete and I were talking and was trying to think of a name, when I said that, you know, I really didn't. I really wanted something that focused on. On family. He just said ohana. And I'm like, yeah, that's perfect. That is the perfect name. And so it has been a great name for us because it really embodies that. We want to really help families thrive. And I also knew that I'd want to decorate Hawaiian and not Bavarian. So there we go. We're Ohana ot.
