A short YouTube monologue (by Mary Kostka) describing what a body sock is and how children use it. The speaker explains that the body sock is a spandex, pillowcase-like sensory tool providing resistance and deep tactile and proprioceptive input; it can be used in varied ways (wrapped, over the head, filled with toys) to give calming deep-pressure compression useful for long car rides and self-soothing.
Another favorite of our kids at Ohana is the body sock. And the body sock is basically a spandex. It's kind of like a giant pillowcase. You can get inside it and you get this resistance, so you get that proprioceptive input, and you get deep tactile input. You can just, like, snuggle up and wrap yourself inside it. And it's just fun. Fun too. The kids will lay down and they'll just be like a starfish in it. They'll just. I. I had one parent. That was how the kids did well in the car. They were able to buckle them in with that thing on, and that's how they did long car rides. They sometimes like it over their head. Then it gives them some, like, deep compression on their head, and so they just wear it all different ways. Sometimes they'll fill it with other things, like a whole bunch of stuffed animals, and they'll just get all this deep pressure that way. It's. It's crazy, all the different things that they can do with it. But basically, it helps with the tactile input and the proprioceptive input so that they're getting the resistance against their arms and their. Their legs. And so it's compressing the joint, which gives the. Goes to the limbic system and the brainstem and gives them that calming proprioceptive input.
