Sensory clothing

Mary Kostka shares quick fixes for kids bothered by clothing textures. Turn socks inside out to hide seams, layer a soft shirt under scratchy clothes, and tie a toy to zipper pulls so they're easier to grab.
Hello, magnificent moms and dads. This is Mary Koska with Ohana ot. This video is going to be about sensory friendly clothing. So most of our kids that have sensory processing problems have issues around clothing and they just have such strong reactions to things like tags and seams and, you know, it's too tight or it's too loose and getting dressed can just, just be a nightmare. So I want to give you just a few tips about, about clothing. First of all, we'll start with socks. One really good tip is just turn the sock inside out. The seams on their feet, they have a lot of nerve endings on their feet. Feet are very sensitive and the feelings of the seams on their feet is often just unbearable. So one quick tip is just to flip the sock inside out and a lot of times that'll do it. You can also there's a whole industry of seamless clothing and sensory friendly clothing. So you can go online and find all kinds of wonderful products that they're just taking out seams and tags and all kinds of things. But that is just a quick little tip. When looking for shoes, put your hand inside the shoe and feel around and you'll be surprised. Like, a lot of shoes are really uncomfortable on the inside. There's a lot of seams and so just feel around and try to find one that's very smooth on the inside. The other thing is that you want to make sure it's very adjustable of the firmness because a lot of kids don't like it if it's loose, they don't like it if it's too tight. So you want to be able to adjust it when it comes to the rest of the clothing. Again, you can, depending on their age and how it looks, sometimes you can just flip something inside out. You can have a more comfortable layer, like an older comfortable shirt on the inside and then have maybe the dress or something that's less comfortable over the top of it. That can make a big difference when it comes to fasteners. There's a lot of simple things that you can do to make it easier. That's another consideration when it comes to clothing. A lot of kids don't like the jean snap or just the feeling of the fastener against their belly. So you look for clothing that is a little bit more comfortable around the waistline. But you can do simple things like adding a little toy, tying a little toy on a zipper to make a zipper pull to make that easier to pull up. Lots of different little things that you can do to make clothing less stressful for the kids.
