Sensory Hero App Intro

Mary Koska, a pediatric occupational therapist, created the Sensory Hero app to give families immediate access to clinic-tested strategies for children with sensory processing challenges. It includes a 30-day challenge, videos explaining the theory, practical calming demos, environmental adjustments, and tips for outings. The app teaches the three Cs: calming yourself, calming the environment, calming the child.

Hey everyone, Mary Koska here and I'm so excited to tell you about the Sensory Hero app. This is a game changer. It's going to help with taming tantrums, meltdowns, sensory struggles. It is just filled with so many things to help you as a parent, as a grandparent, teacher, therapist, anybody who is living with or helping a child that has sensory processing challenges. So a little bit about how this app came to be and what it looks like. So I, I'm a pediatric occupational therapist and I have been practicing for over 36 years. I've had my own clinic in Washington State for 16 years. And so we specialize in helping children that have a really challenging time regulating their emotions, attention, behavior. So lots of kids that have autism, attention deficit, behavioral diagnoses. And so our specialty is sensory integration and primitive reflexes. And so what we have done with the app is created something so that nobody has to wait for help. Our waiting list is over 160 kids and even though we've grown, it's just been a challenge because the need is that there's just so many kids that need help. And so what I did is I spent some time with the, our current clients, the parents, and said what are the things that we've been teaching you since you've been here that we could have taught you on a video while you were waiting, Things that you could have implemented much earlier on. And so that is what ended up in the app. And so a really big thing that parents told us is they, they just love learning the why. Like why, yeah, I could use this tool or do this thing, but like why does it work? What is going on with my child? And so in the app there is a lot of the, the, the knowledge of why. And so what I've done is I've created a 30 day challenge and it can be completed in less than 15 minutes a day because that's what our parents told us was doable. You can binge watch or skip days, you can do it at your own pace. But, but that's the setup. There's 30 days with 15 minutes a day. And it's all the things that work the best for helping our kids be calm. And so we have the three Cs we have calming yourself because you have to be able to stay calm. These kids are very overstimulating so we have to be able to co regulate and give them our calm energy. So that is a whole section on learning, on understanding your own sensory needs and how to take care of yourself. And then there's a lot of environmental things. So simple things, even like things like turning the lights low or using a galaxy light or, you know, creating a safe little space in your home that's less stimulating. There's so many things you can do environmentally that make a big difference. So there's calming the environment and then there's also all the best tools that we have found for calming the child. And there are, there's videos on how to do it, when to do it, why it works. There's also a lot of additional information that's super helpful. So learning about the sensory systems, learning about what primitive reflexes are and how they play into everything, tips for going out and about getting out in the community is often like one of the hardest things for our families when they first start coming. So tips for that, tips for what activities out in the community are the best that are calming and regulating. So there's an ebook in there. So that's basically the gist of it. So we've just taken our expertise, that's all we do is help, help kids with sensory challenges. And so we've taken the secret sauce of what works great at our clinic, Ohana occupational therapy. What our parents said would be the most helpful things to know while they're waiting to get services. And, and it's all in the app. And you can, you can get, you can just pay a little bit and then be able to just have, have it monthly, like however long you want, or you can get a lifetime access and have all the videos. One of the things that's super helpful is being able to show that video to another caregiver, a grandparent, a teacher. When you, when you find a video and you're like, I need somebody else to understand this information, instead of you trying to explain it, you can watch the video. So like my parents said, they, our clients are like, mary, we want you in our pocket now. You can have me in your pocket and, and just not have to wait for help. Be able to get started right away. Aloha.
