Mary Kostka explains how Lycra fabric helps calm children through sensory input. Body socks, swings, clothing, and sheets made from spandex provide proprioceptive feedback that settles anxious or overstimulated kids.
Aloha, magnificent moms and dads. This video is all about the magic spandex material, Lycra. We have lots and lots of uses for this. And the first thing I'm going to talk about is the body sock. I'll hold it up a little higher. So in the body sock, you actually can get. It's kind of like a giant spandex pillowcase. You can get inside it and they can have their head here or they can have their head poking out, and they get inside it and they can just push around and just get all kinds of sensory feedback from it. So what's really great about this fabric is that when it's against the skin tightly, it's giving the deep tactile input, which is calming. And then when you push against it, you're getting input to the receptors in the muscles and joints, the proprioceptors. So then you're getting a really good sense of where you are in space. And it's also a calming sense. And if it's something like a Lycra swing, a spandex swing, then you can get the vestibular movement piece of it, too. You can also just take a piece of fabric, spandex fabric, when you're at the store. It's also called dancewear or swimwear. It's basically swimsuit material, but you can just have a piece of it and the kids can even just push it down on their shoulders like this. You can tie the ends for a longer piece and then they can hook their feet to it and push on it that way. It's also great to get clothing out of this fabric. So a lot of kids that have struggle with different textures of clothing will do really well if this is on under their clothing. So you can get a. Like a wrap. You can get. Under Armour is a product that is made out of this kind of fabric. So you want it really snuggly. Snuggly fittings. I don't know if that's the word, snuggly fitting. You can get like a rash guard, you can get like swim jammers or tights, that sort of thing. But if they have that fabric, like a second skin on their body, that can be really, really calming and make wearing other clothing over it so much more comfortable because they just have this sort of, like, barrier, this second skin, and also it's providing deep pressure, so it's calming. So it's a pretty. Pretty amazing fabric. We use it for lots of different things. And like I said, you can get the body sock. You can have it in clothing. You can have it as a swing. And another thing, that's another great way that this fabric is used is as a sheet. So it's wrapped. You can buy them commercially or make your own. But basically the sheet is like a tube and it's slipped on over the mattress. So when the kids climb into their bed, they get all that deep pressure. And it can also be. You can also have it as like a tunnel to crawl through. So we use this kind of fabric in lots of different ways. It's amazing. Kids love it and it gives their bodies a lot of really good calming sensory input and helps build body awareness. Hi again. I am so glad that you took the time to watch this video and I'm really proud of you because I know you're busy and it takes time to sit down and focus and learn something new and just really proud of you. Give yourself a pat on the back. You're going to see this after each video because I just want to reinforce you and just let you know I'm proud of you. And change isn't easy. Some of these things. You hear the idea and then implementing it. We're all habitual, so it's not always easy to do. So. So just do your best to make little baby steps forward and make little changes that are positive and keep watching. See you in the next video. Aloha.
