In this monologue, Matt Vaadi recounts his experience joining ADP in 2008, just as the company wrapped up a strong fiscal year. When the 2008‑2012 economic downturn hit, most of his colleagues continued using the pre‑recession sales messaging that emphasized growth and new spending. Vaadi recognized that the market reality had shifted: customers were focused on cutting expenses, not adding them. By discarding the old messaging and reframing his pitch around cost‑containment, he became the sole salesperson in his office to earn President’s Club during the downturn, broke the sales record in a historically weak territory, and collected multiple awards (Rookie of the Year, District Manager of the Year). The core lesson he shares is that in a down economy, successful positioning requires abandoning legacy scripts and aligning directly with customers’ immediate need to reduce spend.
