Today on Love Life, I want to talk about having an opinion on things. Because that you like it just makes you like the millions of other people that like it. But why you like it is what makes you unique. So, here's an interesting one. I was watching a show with Anthony Bourdain on CNN, and he was going around Montreal with these two chefs who were showing him around, and one of them said an interesting thing. He said, I think Montreal is the best place in the world. And as I was listening, I thought, Hmm, I wonder why that is. Because, of course, just saying Montreal is the best place in the world isn't that interesting. There are people that say that about all different places across the world. And of course, you thinking Montreal is amazing just makes you like many other people that live there. But then he started to describe it and he started talking about the food and the culture and the way people live there and the sense of pride that people have about being in Montreal and the fact that it's like this beautiful European place. And he went into all these ideas about why he loved Montreal. And then he said, and the fact is it's freezing cold. And the great part about that is that it drives away all of the people that are not supposed to be here. And I thought, that's really interesting. Now I get it. I get why he's saying that. And I get his unique passion for the place. I want you to think about the things that day to day you say you like and don't like. And ask yourself this question, do I do the boring thing of just saying, I like that, I don't like that, 'cause anyone can do that. or do you do the interesting and more unique thing of giving your esoteric or idiosyncratic idea of why you like or don't like that thing? Do you get a little more interesting about it? I hate, like, I, this always comes up when I talk about movies because people always say that one of their favorite movies is love, actually, especially in America. It comes up a lot. You start talking about movies and people are like, oh, I really love the film love, actually. And I Hate that film. Like, I love films and I give a lot of films the benefit of the doubt. And I hate that film for so many reasons that I feel like I don't even have time to go into here. I feel like there's so many characters in that film. How could you even care about one of them? There's like a hundred characters all falling in love at the same time. There's not one story. It's like a hundred people that we're supposed to follow and care about, and.
I care about none of them.
There's, there's Keira Knightley looking at her in a wedding dress and going, I look quite pretty, actually. And you go, you're Keira Knightley. Of course you look pretty. What are we supposed to imagine that you didn't think you looked pretty? That's the character you're playing in this movie. What an insult to the rest of us mere mortals who don't look like we were carved out of stone. When the dad at the end is with the little kid and he's fallen in love, you know, like he's, I don't know, what is he, like six, seven? And he falls in love with the little girl who's like six or seven. And the dad entertains the ridiculous affair 'cause the girl's at the airport and the dad's like, oh, I'll take you to the airport. I know a shortcut. Firstly, there's no shortcut to the airport in England. There's no shortcut. And secondly, why would the dad take the kid to the airport? And they run through security. I don't know if you've seen that scene. They just run through security like that's okay. And that's safe for a dad to just let his kid run through security. And just redict the whole thing. is completely mental and full of disgusting British cliches that I feel like it's just made for Americans. The whole thing is made for it. It's made for Anglophiles outside of England. It's not made for British people. And if you're British and you like that film, I don't understand you. It's ridiculous. It's self-indulgent crap. But my point is, my point is that, you know, I like or dislike that film rather for very specific reasons. And I could just say I don't like love actually. And that wouldn't nearly convey the uniqueness and the intrigue of why I don't like love actually and why that guy likes Montreal and why you like that film or that place or that person. The thing that makes us interesting or intriguing is why. we like or don't like things. And if you're not giving your opinion on that, then you're missing one of the most powerful ways to convey a compelling personality. That's it for today, my friends. I feel like I need to go to bed. After that, I've really exhausted myself. I think we'll sign off there. Thank you so much for listening. We'll see you on the next episode of love life.
