The episode opens with a brief advertisement for Regain Couples Therapy, an online, affordable counseling service. Host Matthew Hussey then introduces the show, noting feedback from listeners who have successfully used his advice, but also sharing a personal struggle: when good things happen, he sometimes doubts their reality and can’t fully enjoy them. The core discussion centers on a disturbing trend of teenage girls posting YouTube videos asking, “Am I pretty or ugly?” and ending with a plea for honesty. Hussey argues this reflects a broader societal failure to teach young people where true value comes from, warning against the simplistic message that “beauty is only skin‑deep.” He emphasizes that real worth is built through knowledge, contributions, and the ways one improves the world, not appearance. He challenges listeners to intervene when someone obsessively talks about looks, urging them to redirect the conversation toward the person’s recent value‑adding actions. Throughout, Hussey promotes his “Matthew Hussey Retreat,” a limited‑spot program promising deeper work on self‑confidence and relationship with oneself. Listeners are invited to comment, tweet, and apply for the retreat.

And I'm your host, Matthew Hussey. It's so exciting to hear feedback from women who say things like, matt, I tried the advice from your podcast and I met someone incredible that same night. But occasionally I'll hear something. Like, when something finally starts to go right in my life, I have trouble trusting that it's real and I just can't enjoy it. If you can relate, I want you to stay tuned until the end of today's show because there's something really exciting I want to share with you that has the power to change your way of thinking forever. But first, let's get to the episode.
Today we're talking about this strange phenomenon that's out there right now, which is young teenage girls posting videos on YouTube asking the question, am I pretty or ugly? And if you actually look these up, many of them finish with in brackets. Please be honest. Now, when I first saw this, I mean, I'm sure most people when they first see this, if they're of any reasonable age or intelligence or maturity, think this is really disturbing. So why are people doing this? For me, what strikes me as perhaps the most scary part of this is how we seem to be unable to educate these people on where real value comes from. And I don't mean from the point of view of saying, well, your value isn't in your looks, your value is from something else, or, you know, everyone's beautiful inside. I don't mean in that cliched way. I actually mean in a real world sense of when you grow up. I recently read an article where someone defines the difference between a child and an adult as being an adult sheds the insecurity of the child because they understand what really does bring value in life. And we seem to be failing to educate young people on how you actually bring value in life and what will end up being valued when they start to grow up. And this, this beauty obsession of young girls saying, am I pretty or am I ugly? Shows a fundamental misunderstanding of what's going to be important later on. Because if you think about it, even in a relationship, because I know there are going to be people whose cynical sides are going to say, yeah, Matt, but when people grow up, looks are still really important. But actually, if you look at most relationships, I've never known a guy who will just be miserable with someone for the rest of his life who's really hot. The fact is, we need to bring value in a whole host of ways. By what we know, by the knowledge we have, by the things we've learned in the world, by the value we bring to other people. What ways do we make the world a better place? What things do we create? All of those things bring value to the table. Beauty is one way that people bring a very superficial form of value. But there are so many other ways to bring value. What we have to do is get back to a place of not. Firstly, it's easy to blame technology. It's easy to get angry at YouTube. It's easy to get angry at magazines or every advertiser out there who places all this emphasis on beauty. But the fact is, it really comes down to education. How much can you educate the person that you care about that their real value isn't going to come from the way they look? Their real value is going to come from what they bring to the world. Here's my challenge to you. Not even for yourself right now, but for someone you care about. I want you to go, and it could be a kid or an adult, because let's face it, this isn't just kids with this problem. It's everyone. Too many people put so much focus on their looks. I want you to find someone you know in your life who puts far too much focus on that. And the next time they start talking about it, tell them that they're boring you and that what they're talking about isn't interesting. And ask them something that they do to actually bring value. Like stop talking about your looks for a second. What are you actually doing this week to create something or be interesting or add to the world? Tell me that, and I'm actually gonna have an interesting conversation with you. That's my challenge to you. Nip it in the bud the next time you hear it and let me know how you get on.
