In this episode of the Love Life podcast, Matthew Hussey argues that waiting for a perfect, singular partner—often called “the one”—can be detrimental to personal growth and relationship success. He introduces the concept of “practice relationships,” describing them as intentional, low‑stakes dating experiences that allow individuals to learn about themselves, recognize unhealthy patterns, and develop relational skills before committing to a long‑term partnership. Hussey acknowledges that this idea may clash with religious or romantic ideals that prioritize abstinence or waiting, but he asserts that one can still honor those values while gaining experience. He uses analogies such as job training and practice runs to illustrate how lack of relational practice can leave someone unprepared for a serious relationship. Throughout the monologue, Hussey emphasizes purpose, personal growth, and the importance of living with intention, encouraging listeners to step out of their comfort zones, make mistakes, and learn. The episode concludes with a promotional call to action for his exclusive Matthew Hussey Retreat, inviting women to apply for a transformative program that promises tools for rapid personal and relational improvement. An opening advertisement for Amica Home Insurance is also included, but the core content focuses on relationship philosophy and the retreat invitation.

Stuck in a rut? We all do from time to time.
The problem is just going through the.
Motions cuts off our ability to grow.
And increase our happiness in life. Now what would happen if you actually began living each and every day with purpose? Let me tell you, it is possible to transform your life from ordinary to extraordinary. and it doesn't have to take months or years, but just a matter of days. Stick with me till the end of the show and I'll tell you exactly how to do it.
Today I'm talking about the subject of practice relationships. Not a very popular concept, especially amongst the romantics in the world who are all about waiting for the one, who are all about holding back, never going and engaging in anyone until they meet that one special person. And I actually think there's something very dangerous about the way people go about this. Now, the way I'm gonna talk about this is possibly gonna offend certain religious people and tread on some toes there. It's also gonna tread on the toes of some of those people who aren't religious but are real romantics in the way they go about meeting someone. But I wanna put forward a case here because I know that in my lifetime, the relationship that I'm in today is served by the relationships I was in yesterday. I know that the learning that I took from them, the heartbreak that I've had, the habits that I have formed from getting better at relationships have all taught me something. I also know that by being with different types of people, I know who I'm trying to be wary of. I know when I meet someone and they start showing me certain signs, I can recognize a bad pattern when I see it. We don't know those things when we're 17 or 18 because we're not ready for them. you know, when we're in our first relationship, we got, we get caught out by everything. Why is it we often get our hearts broken so badly the first time? It's because we, we didn't see it coming. And yet we also live in a world where a lot of parents dissuade their, their kids from being in relationships, even if they're little playful relationships or practice relationships, as I would call them, people, when they get into college, there's a lot of pressure to never be in a relationship. Hey, this is about playing the field, being silly, being yourself, doing whatever you want to do. This is about being free and fun. Don't get into a right now. But the danger of that is that because they've not had a relationship, they get to a point where the first person they then meet, they just jump for. You know, they end up in a long-term relationship with that person with no real instinct of what's right or wrong, whether the person is right or wrong or whether their behavior is right or wrong. Practice relationships teach us so much the perfectionist attitude of always waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, never engaging with anyone. And by the way, look, if you're in that religious group who says, I don't want to have sex till I'm married, that's fine. You can still fit my philosophy into that. You can still have practice relationships and keep to your morals and your rules for yourself. But having that experience and practice will serve you. The last thing you want to do is get to the person you want to spend your life with and not be able to bring your best to the table because you never learned how. that's like me giving you your dream job today, the job you've always wanted, and you're not ready for it because you've had no practice runs. You've not done any job related to it. You've not actually engaged in that job before. You don't know what you're doing. And now you're in danger of losing your dream job because you really don't know what you're doing. You don't know how to engage in it. Experience can be a really wonderful thing. It's not something that makes us wrong. It's not something that to look back on and be ashamed of or to be regretful of. Experience can be a wonderful, wonderful thing. And if you engage in it in the right way, it doesn't mean you have to be reckless and throw yourself into every scenario. But if you engage in it in the right way and allow yourself to experience someone without being a perfectionist the whole time, then you're gonna have so much more to bring to the table later on. And who knows, the person you're with may even surprise you and be someone that you think is really amazing 'cause you gave them a shot. but the point is you allowed yourself the learning curve and I think that's what life is all about. Experience, learning, growth and guess what? You can only get those three things by living. So my friends, go out there, have a good time, don't be too brutal on yourself and don't be too harsh on other people. See what's out there and if nothing else take that learning to the next person who is right for you.
