Stay tuned, because I'm gonna hand you five phrases that are so simple yet so powerful with men that you're gonna be furious at me for not giving this to you years ago. many of you don't know this, but I live in Los Angeles now, and I recently, as in this week, had to take a driving test. I have a, obviously, a driving license, which I've been driving on for the last year because I've been driving since I was 17 in the UK. But now that I'm here, I have to do a new test, according to California state law. So I went to a place which I now consider to be one of the most depressing places I've ever been to in America called the DMV. And I'm, it was like, I mean, I've never walked into somewhere where everybody is so unhappy. The people lining up in there are so unhappy. The people behind the counters seem so unhappy. Just, even there's a sign as you walk in that says, no food or drink allowed. So I thought, that's the one thing that would get me through this. while I'm sitting down and I'm not even allowed to do that. It was so miserable, the whole experience. And it shouldn't even be. DMV, I'm convinced, stands for depressing, miserable void. It doesn't. It's not. What is it? Department of Motor Vehicles. That's not. That's not what it really stands for. It's just an abject place. And I went in there and I was lining up and I got to the front of the line and the guy said, you still need to print off this other thing. I said, oh, well. you know, could you, because I knew it would be easy for him to print it off, print it right next to him. I said, could you just click print and print that off? No, there's a Staples around the corner. So I go to Staples, I go, you know, when I come back, do I have to line up again? Yeah, of course you have to line up again. So I go to Staples, I come back, I then find out that it's $33 to pay for it, which I have a credit card for when I get back to the DMV. And he goes, we don't take credit cards. I pulled out $30. He goes, you're $3 short. I went, so what should I do now? He goes, well, you need to go to an ATM. I went, is there one here? And he goes, no, it's around the corner at 7-Eleven so I go, when I come back, what do I have to do? Queue again, line up again? He goes, yep. I go, good. Okay. So I walk out, I get the money out, I come back, I pay for it. And this is essentially my experience for the next four hours at the DMV. I'm stuck there going through this thing. And by the way, about four hours in, I still haven't done my test. I'm just trying to get through the system. And then finally I get to the point of doing my test. You'll be pleased to know I scored 34 out of 36. Here's my point. When I left the DMV, the whole experience was really miserable and I felt myself starting to get brought down by this. And then I remembered something that my mom had said to me very recently, actually. This wasn't like a, you know, I'm going back to my childhood moment. My mom said this to me recently. She said, Whenever I get someone in my life, like a waiter or someone behind a counter, someone serving me, whenever I get someone who's really grumpy and miserable, she said, I make it my mission to make them smile. Like, if I play a game with myself, like, can I make them laugh? Could I make them smile? And I was laughing as she was telling me this, 'cause I was imagining my mum standing in front of some grumpy old git, and trying to make him laugh and how ridiculous and absurd that would actually look. But I was thinking about it and I thought, you know what? That's really great. Because so often we're in front of people that, look, if we were to take the average of the people's moods around us, generally speaking, in most environments, we'd be unhappy most of the time.
Right?
So we have to be really careful not to just match our energy to the people around us. We have to decide to lead. Now, it's hard to just be happy, happy, happy all the time when people around you are always bringing you down, especially if you have to work with those people or they're the same people all the time. Make it your mission to make someone smile and just at least play the game with yourself. Do you know how I almost see it like it's easy to be happy when everyone around you is happy. When everyone around you is like bringing your spirits up and they're fun and they're playful and they're joking. It's easy. to be good in that position. How do you really stretch your emotions? It's by maintaining them even in situations when it's difficult. So when you're around people who don't make life easy for you, who are grumpy, if you can maintain your state there, then you're really giving your emotions a workout. So I think we should reframe this. Don't sink to where they are. Use it as an opportunity to stretch your social and emotional muscles past where they are now and Do as my mum does. Make a game of it.
