What's In My Minimalist Carry On (After 4 Years)

In this video, Maxime Warnault walks viewers through the contents and organization of his two minimalist travel backpacks after four years of near‑full‑time travel. He first examines the clothing backpack, a multi‑pocket Air bag, detailing each compartment’s purpose and what he actually uses versus leaves empty. He highlights essential comfort and health items such as silicone and wax earplugs, an inflatable travel pillow, a Smart Rope connected jump rope, a frontal lamp, and an AppleTag for tracking. The bulk of the bag holds a streamlined, monochrome wardrobe: a Columbia jacket, a work sweatshirt, Allbirds boxers and socks, Unbound Merino tees, Duer anti‑sweat pants, and a pair of trail running shoes stored in a dedicated shoe compartment. He explains his minimalist clothing philosophy—black‑only pieces, limited brands, and a focus on fit and material quality—to eliminate daily decision fatigue. The toiletry section is kept basic with toothbrush, razor, deodorant, eye‑drops, soap, and shampoo (despite being bald). Throughout, he offers brief recommendations (e.g., earplugs, jump rope) and notes his preference for natural‑material shorts. The segment ends as he transitions to the tech backpack, which contains his M1 Pro laptop and other electronics. The overall narrative showcases how thoughtful pocket design, selective high‑utility items, and a uniform wardrobe enable efficient, low‑stress travel.

After traveling the world almost full-time for 4 years, I want to show you exactly what's in my backpack. So I have 2 backpacks, one for my clothes, one for my tech. Let's get into it. All right, so this is the backpack for my clothes. So this is a backpack from Air, and we have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 different pockets. So first we have a small pocket in the front. So this is really to put some papers inside. When your bag is full, just like mine, it is almost impossible to put your hands here. So I literally never put anything in this pocket, so I never use it. Then we have the first pocket. So this is where I put all my papers. And all the things that don't really fit inside of the backpack. So I have a card game in here. I have my earplugs. When you're traveling, especially in a country like Mexico, if you don't have these silicone earplugs, you are— If you want to like sleep soundly at night, I highly, highly recommend that you try these wax earplugs because they are like— literally when I put them, I don't hear anything and I sleep really really well. So this is what I have here. I have more earplugs. I have a pillow to, like, for the plane. So my bag is full. So, so this is a pillow, inflatable pillow, and I put this on my neck when I'm traveling from Europe to South America or America, and this is saving my life in the planes. Then I have my jump rope. So when I'm in a city or like in a village where I can't get access to a gym, I just do some cardio. And this is a connected jump rope from Smart Rope. And basically it's connected to an app on my phone and it tells me exactly how many jumps I have done. So generally I do 1,000 jumps, I do some push-ups, I do 1,000 jumps, I do abs, sit-ups. If I feel like it, I do another 1,000 jumps. And some kinds of other exercise, and I have a full workout done just with this. So highly recommend. And then I have a frontal lamp. I'm not going to remove it. And then, like, as you can see, this is where you can— I have a pen in here. This is where you can put your passport. I have some papers like my international permits, and in every one of my bags I have an AppleTag. Yeah. So I can track my bag anywhere I go. I have some papers in here, some battery rechange, change, and that's pretty much it for the front pocket. So let's get into the main, like the one here at the top. This is where I get my passport. So this is where I put, I have my passport in here with some pictures and stuff that I don't usually look at often. Then we have, let's go with the back pocket. So this is generally a pocket for your laptop. If you only have one bag, this is where you're going to put your laptop. I have my gym gloves that I never wear. I have some face masks that— to keep my skin looking young and beautiful. So that's all I have in here. And now to the main pocket. So this is where I put all, literally all of my clothes. And what's good with this backpack is that it compresses here with 4 straps, and there is also a place where you can put a water bottle here on the side. So all the pockets have been thought about for people who travel, and I use all of them pretty much except the front, front one. Um, so let's get into the main section, the biggest section of this backpack, which is where I have all my clothes. Okay. So right here you can see that at the top I have some extra shoes. So this comes from the back. At the bottom here I have a zip that I can open to access to this pocket where I put my running shoes. So this is what I have here. I have a jacket from Columbia, and this is the only jacket that I have really. It's small size, so it's very close to my, to my body, and it has this thing inside to keep me warm when it's cold and to keep me cold when it's warm. I really, really like this, this jacket because I can wear it in like any, any weather and I'm always hot or I'm never too hot. Sorry for the sirens if you can hear them. We are in Mexico City. So this is the only colored sweatshirt that I have and this is probably my favorite one. This is from my work and I use this one to match my shoes. And to vary a little bit from the black. And I like the style. It's a little bit oversized and it just fits me perfectly. So really love this one. Then, as you can see, everything is compartmentalized, if I can say it this way. So I have my main clothes. I have my second pant in here. I have my second sweatshirt. I have all of my t-shirts. On this one, I have my underwear and my socks and my gym shorts. Okay. And on this one, this is my toiletry bag. So let's start with toiletry bag. Literally, I don't have anything fancy. I just have toothbrush, like shaving things, and deodorant, and perfume. I don't usually put perfume, but sometimes I do. I have like pore strips, like different things, razor, drops for my eyes because I got eye surgery, so to hydrate my eyes. And that's pretty much it. I have like soap and shampoo, even though I don't need shampoo because I am bald. That's pretty much all I have in here. So pretty classic. I don't go fancy with anything. Then we have these underwear, socks, and gym equipment. So this is what I wear when I'm going out and it's a little bit— there is like a little bit of breeze, but it's it's too hot to wear like a sweatshirt. This is just another layer that I add on top of my t-shirts and that keeps me warm. Then I have two shorts from Nike, which I want to replace with some other shorts, shorts that have more natural materials, because these are using a lot of chemicals that are not good for your body, for your hormones, and this kind of thing. So if you guys have any recommendations for gym equipment that are natural materials, I'm open for it. Then I have underwear. So as you can see, everything is black. I don't get to choose. Like, in the morning I wake up, I took one boxer, one t-shirt, one pant, and socks. Everything is black. I don't have to choose. It's just so, so easy, and it fits me well. I like it, and it's just simplicity. I don't have to think about what I'm going to wear today. So this— Yeah. Boxers are from Allbirds, and literally, like, the quality, guys, this is the best boxers you can ever buy. Like, I don't feel like I'm wearing anything. It's just lightweight, it's stretchy, and it's just the best. So give it a, give it a go if you want to try them. Then I have some socks in here, so regular white socks. I have socks from Allbirds as well. It's like the short socks. And I have some other socks and a second gym short. So that's all I have in here. And now to the main area, which is where I have my second pant, my second sweatshirt, and all my t-shirts. So for the t-shirts, I have this one that I'm wearing from Allbirds as well, and I asked my mom— thank you, Mom— to cut, like, to plug the sleeves together, because otherwise they were coming like at this, like, here. And I don't like it when I have, like, too big, um, leaves, and I want them like this. This is way more stylish. So I have, like, 5 of them, I think. And then I also have new ones from Unbound Merino, and it's, like, 100% merino wool, so it's stretchy, it's lightweight. The only thing is I took medium, and they are a little bit small for me, so I wish I took large, but honestly, with Allbirds and Merino, I feel like Merino fits much better in terms of the, the leaves— the sleeves, sorry. And I don't know, it has just a better, better fit on me. So yeah, I have this from Allbirds, Unbound Merino. This one is a super light, almost transparent t-shirt that my mom, mom bought me. Thank you, Mom, once again, for when it's like really, really hot. I don't get to like sweat into this, like too much of a t-shirt. Then I have a second pant which is exactly the same as this one from Duer, and it's like a no sweat pant they call it, and I can wear this in winter, I can wear this when it's a little bit cold, and basically all the time. Even here when it's hot in Mexico, I wear this and that fits well. And they are anti-transpirant, they are a little bit stretchy, not too much, and they are just the best pants that I've had. Finally, I have this sweatshirt with a hoodie, so all black. I don't even know what the brand is. And, uh, that's all I have. Finally, inside of these shoes compartment, we have the access to the shoes. So that's the thing that I get The last, and basically these are my running shoes. I have like a Air shoe bag in here and these are my running shoes. So it's like trail running shoes. I generally run inside on the treadmill and I put some supplements inside to gain some space in my backpack. 'Cause I came here with a lot of supplements and I have like another backpack for this. So that is all I have inside of this backpack. So this is what it looks like when it's empty. So main pocket. So you also have like things here that you can, that you can put. I think I have a kit, like emergency kit, and that's all I have literally in this backpack. So I really like this shoe compartment because like it separates, even if your shoes are dirty or something, it separates see it from the rest of your bag. And I really like to have this here. And like, really, this backpack has been with me for the last 2 or 3 years, and I— it's literally brand new. I really take care of my stuff, and I couldn't recommend it enough. So now we are going to go to the tech backpack, and I will see you there. Peace. All right guys, so this is my tech backpack. So this is literally where I have my computer. It's I have like the latest M1 Pro, completely maxed out. I have like— this thing is expensive and this thing is heavy. Heavy.
