How do you choose to live?

Mayur Bardolia argues that honest self-reflection and awareness of limited time are essential for a fulfilling life. He shares a story about a 50-year-old friend who believes he has only five productive years left, and asks listeners what they've accomplished in the past five years. He proposes consciously designing your life with purpose rather than drifting through routine.

In this video, we are going to discuss about how do you want to choose to live. So let's begin. First and foremost, I strongly believe in honesty and truth because we cannot ignore the fact. I love to see the world from different perspectives. I'm neither positive nor negative. Positive and negative thinking are just concepts created by the people who want to categorize their thinking. In fact, There is only thinking, or we can add real honest thinking. We have to admit the truth. The more honest we become, the easier for us to succeed. Now we are living our life to fulfill our needs and desires. We are in constant pursuit of success and happiness. We spend all of our lifetime seeking for it. Now as a matter of fact, the very few can achieve exactly what they call success and happiness. I would like to share an example or experience of a friend who is running a successful consultancy firm and an IT firm. When I met him last time, he was 50 years old, and we were having a conversation about how can we get more results and living a fulfilling life. In the beginning of the conversation, he clearly mentioned that he has only got 5 years to live. Now, with surprise, I asked him, If he has any disease, and he denied. In fact, he laughed and said he wants to live even 100 years. But he brought his chair closer to me and said in a lower tone, He said that, let me tell you that I am now 50, and I don't think I will be physically capable of working as efficiently as when I was 30. My body muscles and bones are becoming weaker, and just like it happens with others, Now, I may live longer, but my effectiveness of performing more will not be better than now. I will have to surrender to my physical weaknesses. If I will live after 55 and still perform as good as I'm doing right now, that will be a bonus. That's what I want, but at that time I may not be able to perform better. So Mayur, I have only got 5 years to live and I'm committing to create even more powerful results. He continued, so many people wake up in the morning, have a cup of coffee and enjoy breakfast, get ready for work. They reach to workplace and keep looking at the clock just to check their lunchtime. They talk to their colleagues, but most of the talks are nothing to do with productivity and achievement. Now as soon as the clock hits the finish time at the workplace, they pack their bags and ready to go home. They reach home and they have dinner with their family. They meet their friends. The way they gets over, they wait till the weekend to celebrate, and they wait until the end of the month to collect the paycheck. The same way, the year passes and they are ready to celebrate 31st December and welcome the new year with a lot of wishes, desires, and promises. The same way, two, three, four, and five years go by, and nothing extraordinary. Happens. He paused for a second and said something really groundbreaking. Do people ask themselves, what did I do in past 5 years? How could I lose 5 years? Why didn't I do anything worthwhile? In spite of all resources, why didn't I do anything that make me feel satisfied? Nobody was stopping me from growing, so why did I stop myself to grow in past 5 years? We were silent for a while. After our meeting, our conversation was over, it was still going on in my mind. The pain of regret is more powerful than the pleasure of doing nothing right now. I asked myself, and I want you to ask yourself too, what did I do in last 5 years? Ask yourself, how could I afford to lose the precious 5 years? Why didn't I do anything worthwhile? In spite of all resources, why didn't I do anything that make me feel satisfied? Nobody was stopping me from growing, so why am I stopping myself right now? The truth is this: time will pass on anyway. As Seneca said, while we are postponing, life speeds by. We look at the years we live so far, but we rarely think deeply about the years left for us to live. We are living in a world where most of us spend more time thinking about and planning for a vacation or a birthday party than we do about the aging process and its endpoint. We do not look closely at our time left in life. We want to reach to the cinema, airport, and train station on time because we know the end time. Why do we not think we will depart at any time? Now, I suspect it is because we are not interested in the pain associated with discovering that we failed to fully use the precious days already written in our individual book of life. Now, pay close attention. Imagine the day exactly after 30 days. Let's assume that at 12 PM is the deadline to accomplish whatever you want. We can choose the way we want to live. Now you are looking at the clock and it says 11:50 after one month, and you got only 10 minutes to the deadline. Now you need to answer honestly. Why didn't I do that I wish I must have done? What was needed to do but I just ignored doing it? What are my deep regrets? Am I having pleasure or a lot of regrets? Did I contribute a lot to the society? Did I provide the best to my family? Ask yourself. One of the biggest regrets of the people is, I wish I could have done more, but I did not do. I know it's really painful, but it's a fact. Mark Twain said, 20 years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you did not do than by the ones you did. If you can internalize this wisdom now without having to gain it through regret, your life will absolutely be richer. This conclusion is courtesy of people who lived to be over 95 years of age. When they had the opportunity to challenge themselves a bit more, they did not do. When they figured that something was actually not as risky as they thought, it was simply too late to do anything about it. Now, the shortest way to shift your game of life today is to create it consciously and consistently with a purposeful vision of what you want it to be. You can enlist your talent, experience, and wisdom to create and live the story of unfolding the rest of your life— your story. I call this active creative process of changing the game.
