A designer argues that AI prompts alone won't teach you design. You need hands-on time in Figma, moving things around and iterating freely. Code constrains creativity in ways that mouse-driven tools don't.

It's hard to learn visual design when you're just typing. You can learn bits and pieces and maybe prompt your way to a better design. You can definitely do that. But I think the path to learning really good design is like literally moving it around with your mouse and placing things because sometimes auto layout and frames and the constraint of code, it literally constrains you. And even though I was a proficient front end developer before AI was even a thing, I could make a browser display anything I wanted to with HTML and css just writing code. And even though I had the skill to do that, I still struggled to be creative with my design, even though I knew how to put it all together. Because it's just like a different mindset of like building and tinkering with code versus free form, moving things around on Figma. Command D, duplicate it, try another one. Command d, try another one and kind of explore and create. So I think there's definitely multiple ways to attack that idea of learning design, getting good at it.
