Money should not be used as a power wedge in a relationship to control one party or the other. That's not a relationship. That's not what this is about. And I think that it's important for couples to understand, one, that they need to talk about money, two, how to talk about money, and three, to get on the same page. We may not be on the same line, we may not be on the same word, but as long as we're on the same page, we can navigate. This is when there's a disagreement about money. Typically the disagreement is about tactics. What are we doing with the money? How are we spending the money? Where are we making the money? The problem with tactical conversations is they come from the perspective of judgment, criticism, and not from the perspective of creating a life. What's your vision for your life? What is. What do you want your life to look like? Because money fights are typically less about the numbers and more about emotions, values, fears, identity. Create a shared vision and financial goals, and always have the conversation through the lens of that vision.
